Whoever was operating the joystick on the remote control was a freak - as in damn good. It's very difficult to crash a helo upside-down like that even if you're at the controls in the helo.

Honnestly though, the H-21 was a real pioneer and the first real "utility" helicopter. It entered service in 1949!!! and became the first helicopter to cross the United States! Prior to that, helicopters were in their infancy and mostly used as observation platforms...

the "flexi bit in the middle" as you put it, is meant to allow the rear rotor to pitch forward (angle foword) and give it increased speed capabilities. Without the loss of streangth to lift cargo.
