My uncle', whom I am named after, was a navigator on a B-24 that was so severely damaged in this raid that it coudn't make the return flight. The crew bailed out...except for my uncle, who was too drunk to find his parachute. By the time he finally got it on and jumped, the plane was over Allied lines.
The rest of the crew was captured by the Germans.
My compliments on choosing the Ray McKinley Orchestra and my cousin Imogene Lynn singing "Big Boy" as your background music. You can see Imogne in person by doing a YouTube search for Imogene Lynn - Big Boy. Thanks.
There was a catwalk, a narrow metal plank about 10" wide across the bomb-bay doors, longitudinally front to back. To get from the front of the plane to the back, one needed to walk the catwalk. The bay doors were thin and could only support 100 lbs, for safety to let bombs drop through in emergency. If a man fell off the catwalk, he'd die.
My late Dad, in the 98th, said the Lib was the best plane ever made, cause it always got him home. Knocking on a wooden .50 ammo box, he was lucky. Thanks!
You already lost the war when you gave up entire Transylvanian Ardeal to the Hunks without even a fight. Romanians are a noble people who suffered terribly with monstrous leaders.
Great video, great music, sad story! Brave men, both in the air and on the ground, paying the price for pompous or sadistic (or in some cases both) fools safely cosseted in their war rooms. Does anyone know the origin of the name " Flying
8-Balls" for the 44th Bomb Group? My uncle flew with them and was KIA August 1944. Thanks if anyone knows.
Ploisti raid aimed to hurt mechanised efforts of Wehrmacht in Eastern front as far as obtaining aviation octane fuel and for Panzers. This was to pacify Stalin by Western Allies not getting for him a second front in Europe until 6/6/44. Now for Romanian cousins- was it worth getting TransDnestria grasses and having army wiped out at Don offensive? Bad wicked leaders making bad choices and you the people suffered.
My Grandfather was in the 376th :-) He wasn't flying yet at the time of this mission, but recalled seeing the planes that did return come back with tree branches stuck in their cowlings. Nice tribute and nice music selection. Always reminds me of my Grandfather.
In the end effect America fought to make the world safe for communism, and no, communism did not disappear after the fall of the Soviet Union, it lives on as cultural Marxism, some may know it as political correctness. I mean just look at your country now, you have an Obama ruling you, the American troops of 1940ies would have turned around and marched for Washington if they would have hand even inkling of the filth the Amerika has become today.
You saved a lot of your soldiers by helping and making concessions to a criminal and a traitor called Stalin. He died of old age.Bad omen for the '"free world".North Korea, Iran, Vietnam.Soviet Union could have been killed in infancy.Instead soviets came into my country in american trucks.
My dad's up there holding on to dear life and the lives of his men. In Grateful memory to all the men of 'Lil Abner' and the fellows who looked up to the sky and knew they were a long, long way from home.
2:08 im sure ive seen a picture of this scene in colour somewhere, any idea where i could buy such a thing ? great vid those guys really were brave what a rush ..
1st raid was an fiasco ,and in the 2 they have use 1000 bombers ,from wich they lost 300 whit 10 person`s / bomber ..... so is not interesting ! You must made a tribute for the 1st raid .... why don`t you....
44th Bombardment Group "Flying 8-Balls", 93rd Bombardment Group "Ted's Travelling Circus", 98th Bombardment Group "Pyramiders", 376th Bombardment Group "Liberandos", 389th Bombardment Group "Sky Scorpions".
Planes such as Brewery Wagon, Hail Columbia, Sad Sack II, The Sandman, Lucky Lady, Utah Man, Hadley's Harem, Vagabond King, GI Ginnie, Euroclydon, Hell's Wench, Jose Carioca, Little Joe, Suzy-Q, to name but a few. Never forget the brave men who flew, fought, and died in these B-24s.
yep yanks get owned back there.i bet they did never think about us having OMIDA or Caterpillar in english,a armored train full of flak.and tons of 88's and small AA near ploiesti.::D:D:DD:
fuck face the germans lost the war too but if u compare german soldiers with americans and rusians they own.and we lost because our king decided to help his family(like they would help him)dont talk shit if u dont jnow.romania was on 4 place on casulties.and no one gives us anything.americans took something, rusians took all ;(( we dont get anything.thats becasue big powers suck balls,so fuck rusia(110%),and fuck america (only 50%)
You're speaking politically , I don't know of all the details concerning Romania. I only know that the bombing raids, despite heavy losses were continued and resulted in a shortening of the war. America gave you nothing because the Russians occupied your country and told the world you needed no help.
the bombardement were resumed after 1 year after the americans caputered Italy and were able to send fighter escorts because of the losses of that day~50 bombers shooted down and another ~50 bombers severly damaged, second day afte the raid the 8 american aerial army was paralized
Thanks! Yes, these are B-24D Liberators, which was the model before the swiveling nose turret B-24. That was the B-24J and B-24H models. I'll do a tribute on those models soon.

These were the men who went to wipe out the germans oil supply, ending the war much sooner, if successful. Our losses were more than predicted.
