Thank god Jesse McCartney isnt in this movie i dont think i would have been able to watch it at all. But i do think they should have made the Water Tribe people darker and the Fire nation people lighter like switch them around

You have no complaints? The cast sucked, so did the movie. Katara & Sokka should've been played by NATIVE AMERICANS & Zuko would be like an Asian/white mix. The Fire Nation are NOT Indian. And the Noah Ringer who they got to play Aang in the movie was from Texas and was still living there when he auditioned. You don't just use people from Hollywood in movies. I would have put up with it all if the dialogue hadn't been so cringe-inducing. Honestly, every line was so awkward and unfunny that would have a much better film, but this one was already terrible.
Sokka and katara sucked balls. Peltz's version of Katara was basically a no name little girl who's not mature, headstrong, and older than her age, who didn't have to witness her mother's death and shoulder the burden of raising an older brother and practically an entire village. I don't like the cast !!! I have been watching the Avatar with my son since the series started and I think they could have done a better job casting people. The only one in the movie that looks like the cartoon is Aang but even then they screwed up the name and called him ung in the movie instead of Aang!!!!

@mexicanguy43 Yeah, that scene that you're talking about is very much like the show. But don't get your hopes up for a lot of those moments. There isn't a lot of humor in the movie - there's only just enough to reference to the show's comedy. The movie just kind of nods at different aspects of the series just to acknowledge them.

just saw it last night, but one thing that bothers me is if firebenders need to be close to a fire source with out Sozin's Comet then i wonder how is Azula going to do her lightningbending in Book 2, maybe they will make her like Iroh who can create her own fire and lightning cuz it would be weird is she gathers fire from a camp fire and it turns blue or maybe that would be cool.

So he cast the leads first, then based the race of the rest of the characters on the leads race. He cast two Caucasians as Water Tribesmen, so he made the rest of the Water Tribe dominantly Caucasian etc But he cast mostly Asians for Earth Kingdom roles (including Suki). @barclayteo1 The thing you must realize is that M Night didnt say he changed Sokkas character. He just said that he had to take out a lot of the comedy in the film, because its a serious movie, and that takes a lot away from Sokka since hes the primary comic relief character. Think of it this way; as a TV show, Avatar is capable of balancing different stuff, including action, drama, and comedy. But when adapting it to a 2 hour film, its hard to balance, so they had to reduce the amount of comedy

Its kinda logical that they switched dark skin and light skin in the movie thou. In real life the more you live away from the equator (hence, the more cold) the LIGHTER your skin is. And the more you live in the hot sun (aka equator), the darker your skin is.
The movie does have it right in skin color. Water tribe need to be white, while fire nation needs to be darker.

If you want to audition for the sequel, all that I can really tell you is get some acting lessons, get an agent, and try to contact the right people. You might also think about some martial arts training.
But remember, it won't be a while before they start casting the sequel. They released the cast for The Last Airbender only a few months before filming, and they shouldn't start filming the sequel till 2011. I predict that it will be at least a year before they come to casting the sequel.
Oh and by the way here is another piece of info Aang is play by a no talent kid that was found by Shyamalan on the internet. He has never even been on a set before this film. Shyamalan is a big fan of just hiring no talent kids then he calls them stars!!!! Watch his other films and look at the kids they all suck! Nicola Peltz has done small-time acting for a while. She had about 1 second of screen-time in the movie Deck the Halls (although she was originally in it for longer, but you can find that scene in the 'deleted scenes' on the dvd). I believe she played a main character in a low-budget fim-festival movie before. And she was also in a Miley Cyrus music video (Seven Things). That's all that I know of.

Avatar is an American cartoon, created by two American guys, MIchael DiMartino, and Bryan Konietzko. None of the artists or writers are even of Asian decent. None of the voice actors are of Asian decent. WHY the heck does everyone think they characters are Asian? DiMartino said that all four nations have elements of East and west, and a person of any ethnicity can live in any of them. So the characters should be diverse, like America. It is NOT Japanese anime. Its American.

There isn't a lot of humor in the movie - there's only just enough to reference to the show's comedy. The movie just kind of nods at different aspects of the series just to acknowledge them.

just saw it last night, but one thing that bothers me is if firebenders need to be close to a fire source with out Sozin's Comet then i wonder how is Azula going to do her lightningbending in Book 2, maybe they will make her like Iroh who can create her own fire and lightning cuz it would be weird is she gathers fire from a camp fire and it turns blue or maybe that would be cool.

So he cast the leads first, then based the race of the rest of the characters on the leads race. He cast two Caucasians as Water Tribesmen, so he made the rest of the Water Tribe dominantly Caucasian etc But he cast mostly Asians for Earth Kingdom roles (including Suki). So he already has announced his intent to make Toph Asian

@barclayteo1 The thing you must realize is that M Night didnt say he changed Sokkas character. He just said that he had to take out a lot of the comedy in the film, because its a serious movie, and that takes a lot away from Sokka since hes the primary comic relief character. Think of it this way; as a TV show, Avatar is capable of balancing different stuff, including action, drama, and comedy. But when adapting it to a 2 hour film, its hard to balance, so they had to reduce the amount of comedy

Its kinda logical that they switched dark skin and light skin in the movie thou. In real life the more you live away from the equator (hence, the more cold) the LIGHTER your skin is. And the more you live in the hot sun (aka equator), the darker your skin is.
The movie does have it right in skin color. Water tribe need to be white, while fire nation needs to be darker.

I've met Inuits and they look like really brown Asians. I've never met an Eskimo, but in the documentaries, they are pretty dark.

Really? Well Im not an expert, its just that I remember my biology teacher say that the closer you live to the equator or tropical areas the darker your skin is. And lighter the further away.
Hence why people in Africa, SouthEast Asia, Middle East, tropical americas, etc.. are dark skinned.

That's true, but at the poles the ozone layer is thinnest, so the harshest sun rays come through.
Also, the snow reflects sunlight so your skin becomes darker. Ever noticed when people go snowboarding they come back really dark (except around the eyes, so they have white circles xD)? It's kind of the same thing.

If you want to audition for the sequel, all that I can really tell you is get some acting lessons, get an agent, and try to contact the right people. You might also think about some martial arts training.
But remember, it won't be a while before they start casting the sequel. They released the cast for The Last Airbender only a few months before filming, and they shouldn't start filming the sequel till 2011. I predict that it will be at least a year before they come to casting the sequel.

Due in theaters in summer 2010, Airbender has already begun to face a bit of controversy over the casting of white actors like Rathbone, Ringer and McCartney to play Asian characters a concern the actor was quick to dismiss. I think its one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan, he said of the transformation hell go through to look more like Sokka. Its one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit.

I doubt that they will be changing the main actors with the release of the movie so close. I think the cast isnt that bad. I saw a picture of Noah Ringer, and he looks alot like Aang. Sure they shouldve casted people that actually look like Sokka, Katara, and the rest of the characters, but they might be great actors. That's the only reason I see a director casting someone for their movie. So I have hope that the movie will be great, and the actors will do great.

The southern water tribe clearly has blue eyes, tan skin and slightly features running from slightly Asian to full on Caucasian. You´re just going to have to hope that they can act and the director doesn´t royally fuck this up

You mean Toph? You act like they're forgetting about her or something. She's not supposed to be in the movie. That's the only reason she isn't. It's based on book 1, which Toph was never in. Toph doesn't come til book 2, so she'll be cast in the sequel.

I am not being racist towards white people I love white people; I am expressing my love for the Avatar show, the creators of the show intentionally represented the water tribe as Pacific Islanders who are Native Americans. Its just a disrepect for the show to cast them as white anglo saxon people. Sorry no connection to the show what so ever.

Racist Hollywood can make shows with all white cast like suddenly susan, seinfeld, friends, lord of the rings. but will not give asians the same rights.
If people point this out hollywood will say an all asian cast is racist.

Dude the casting sucks. It has nothing to do with race. Just all the actors look nothing like the characters except for whoever's playing katara.

i have to say, despite everyone hating the cast, i actually think they did a good job casting.
Though i'm curious, who is nicole peltz (sp?). i know noah is premiering but i've at least heard of everyone else except nicole. is this her premier as well?

Nicola Peltz has done small-time acting for a while. She had about 1 second of screen-time in the movie Deck the Halls (although she was originally in it for longer, but you can find that scene in the 'deleted scenes' on the dvd). I believe she played a main character in a low-budget fim-festival movie before. And she was also in a Miley Cyrus music video (Seven Things). That's all that I know of.

Avatar is an American cartoon, created by two American guys, MIchael DiMartino, and Bryan Konietzko. None of the artists or writers are even of Asian decent. None of the voice actors are of Asian decent. WHY the heck does everyone think they characters are Asian? DiMartino said that all four nations have elements of East and west, and a person of any ethnicity can live in any of them. So the characters should be diverse, like America. It is NOT Japanese anime. Its American.
