Well I have two versions of this film one is on a later version of laserdisc well around 1990 the other is dreadful 2001 DVD edition where all the original dialogue panning as been junked messed botched-up where most of it is anchored centre channel or didnt you know that fact! When Floyd arrives at the space station the woman announces her voice should be heard on the left with part of the sound in the centre or left half pan.

This was one of the first Kubrick films that a friend and I picked up when we were trying to see some "real" films back in the day, and the ending just took us for a loop. I think we had to stop it half way, take a break, eat some pizza, and come back into it, haha.
Very iconic, though, as you said. A must-watch film for sure.
