  • I hated this song. It depresses me, it reminds me of some shit that would be played during Vietnam days. I feel like I'm about to throw up thinking about Vietnam and this song at the same time. Depressing my soul.

  • @Boogers4dinner Why listen to it then?

  • Who is the Chicago of today? Category: Modern Band that's just as solid, creative, and technically excellent, yet truly musical in every sense of the word. Your response?

  • @L0c0VidE0 Music today doesn't have meaning for some reason. Unlike the good old days where music actually meant something and a select few artists today, music is crap. Auto tuned, meaningless, crap.

  • uh ... rest of the song...you left me hanging !

  • If Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker had a kid he would sound like Terry..No way to know how much music died with him but he is sorely missed>

  • @mrsandwichmafiaman ... =D yeah, that kind of scare me when music I love gets genderfied and watered down. I do like that they at least love the song and the band. Anyway, back to the song for me....I love vocals in this song as well. He just pours so much happiness and soul into it. I've loved Chicago since I was a little kid. Thank god for good old radio back in the day when they actually played music by players.

  • im so glad southern university played this

  • @mrsandwichmafiaman well, its not surprising, we played the Star Spangled Banner backwards in a bachelor party. Lol.

  • すばらしい

  • @tuue i agree... asian guy, yes this is the one of the best bands ever.

  • @BigSock099

And their album sales are proof. Secondly only to The Beach Boys.

  • 1971 estudiaba la secundaria y no me fastidiaba de escuchar esta melodia, excelente banda

  • One of the greatest bands ever.

  • Lo mejor de mi juventud.

  • We r playing this for Jazz Ensemble

  • My uncle got me loving this group back in 67 when I was 7, they were C.T.A. saw them over 32 times in the course of 40 years! Will always be my one & only favorite band!!

  • Terry was the backbone of this group! When he killed himself, Pete infected the band with a horrible cancer that destroyed it

  • @Gomek2 Agreed. What drew me into this band, besides Pankow's excellent horn arrangements, was Kath's intensity and talent. I have bought vinyl LPs over the last 5 months for Chicago I through XI and will go no further. RIP Terry Kath

  • @fatcampguitarist Chicago III and most of IV are probably their best work. The music and image of old school Chicago are burn deeply into my phyche as that's what my siblings who were older than me back in the early 70's played a lot of. I thought Terry was related so how as a young kid being that my brother's friends looked like the band members. :)

  • If you don't orgasm while listening to this you're dead!

  • heerlijk jeugdsentiment

  • I wish Peter Cetera wold rejoin the group. He has a great voice and made some of the Chicago songs so great.

  • :)

  • Love it! :)

  • memories of my dad! love it!!!

  • It's cut off, yet you people voted 553 up & 14 down & I'M ONE OF THE 14!

  • @dst257 its still a good song bro

  • @dst257 You're right, but damn these other people want to hang you! It is cut off though!

  • I think they hit their peak about 4 or 5.

I don't think they had many hits after that.

OK, now EVERYBODY tell me how full of shit I am.

    lol

  • @dst257 Your full of shit

  • @commandergree1231 it's YOU'RE full of shit, but nice try.

  • @dst257 Makes no difference

  • This is corny but I play this every time I'm in the 90th percentile after an exam.

  • Their earlier stuff was far better IMO, and this was the best of the best, to me.

  • Porque la cortan? Hay una versión extraordinaria y más completa, ya se parecen a cierta estación de radio

  • what happened? the song just ended abruptly

  • good sound quality! what the fuck happened? during that tremendous jazz guitar solo.....you must repost.... i have over 600 albums & cannot find chicago2...damn

  • holy crap..went through the entire song in anticipation of the great ending, only to realize the end is cut off?! disappointed. :(

  • His voice is the absolute best. His guitar sings. How I love this song!!!!!!!

  • the only reason anyone could dislike this is if they wanted it in better quality than 240p

  • @79selym

    EHM ! . . .

WHy, this is abruptly CUT ! some distance into this marvellous guitarr riff that Terry pulled off.

    Just CUT !

    And I can't quite get it . . .

    Why ? !! ??????????????

    As in * W H Y ??*

    Completely ruins all . . .

  • Probably the most played song on my 8 track and L.P. ever. This was and is the greatest rock band of all-time. Terry Kath, the very best rock guitarist ever. Wow, this was some incredible music that will live on forever.

  • Sweet

  • @DoCtOrSoUp143 Mars

  • The "Chicago" sound takes me back to the late '60's and '70's when music was music! It was so full of hard driving melodies, plus great slow songs that made me think of first loves. KEEP ON TRUCKIN' CHICAGO!!!!!!!

  • proper tune

  • I play this in my 7th and 8th grade jazz band, and we sound spectacular. Lol, I actually do smile every time we play the song. It's by far my favorite, and it sounds amazing with the arrangement. The composer, James Pankow, and the arranger, Peter Blair, have some extreme talent. The way the trumpets rise up as the saxes have the melody is amazing, and I must say that this is an awe-inspiring song.

  • @TheWoogie2 Keep jamming the horn man! I played trombone when I was your age but I was never very good at reading music, so I got discouraged, rather than just enjoying it and playing by ear. I wish I would have kept it up so I could play like Trombone Shorty ;)

  • 10 dislikes? how can that be? must be 10 retards passed this way. This song should be fucking etched in the annals of world history. Fuck the HoF,its a political exercise anyway, you have to pay to get in. This song and band are what defined America in all its greatness and glory.

  • Bypassed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame again. WTF?

  • I CAN'T FIND THE SINGLE OF THIS ON YOUTUBE. IT CUTS OUT THE MIDDLE BUT HAS A GREAT "SERAPHIN" ENDING. WHAT GIVES?

  • ATTHIDDDDDDDDDDD

  • my marching band is a chicago theme we are playing

    Make me smile

    just you n me

    free

    only the beginnings

  • @the1069guy mars?

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE ARE 9 DISLIKES, THIS IS SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER RECORDED BY ANYONE!!!!

  • @sledj567 Possibly they dislike it because of the boring still picture on the video. Or because the music ended so abruptly. I'm sure that no one actually dislikes the song.

  • @sledj567 Possibly they dislike it because of the boring still picture on the video. Or because the music ended so abruptly. I'm sure that no one actually dislikes the song.

  • What a brass section extraordinaire.

  • I had the honor of seeing this band live just before Terry Kaths' accidental death.

What a great talent! What a great band!

  • Fuck the eight dislikes

  • Playing this song for marching band : )

  • @the1069guy me too!

  • @the1069guy north hills high is having a whole show devoted to Chicago this year. We're playing this, hard to say i'm sorry, and 24 or 6 to4.

  • @the1069guy This would be a good marching band song

  • @the1069guy So am I!

  • @the1069guy

    what school

  • @the1069guy DITTO, holding a Double French Horn HORIZONTALLY AT MOUTH LEVEL for the whole show. And I weighed 115 lbs.

  • @the1069guy we played it three years ago

  • @the1069guy Ya me 2. Exept i play in this thing called pep band at my school in wich we played stuff like this. lol.

  • @Timothy I heard that too His friends warned him to be careful, he showed the empty magazine N declared it was unloaded, not realizing 1 had loaded in the chamber, put it back to his head, pulled the trigger N it fired, killing him instantly...

  • terry was "offed" by the chick he was bangin', and made to look like a russian roulette "accident" with alot of help by her real ol man

  • Why does this band continue on?! For what?! When Chicago lost Terry, they lost a huge chunk of the band's soul. So they had some schmaltzy hits in the '80s....WHO CARES. THIS here is the mighty C.T.A.!

  • Love Terry.....Such a Raw Talent.....RIP.

  • Arghh!! I hate it when you don't get all the song !!

  • Why does out just cut off at the end

  • This is of my favorites

  • This song always takes me back to my childhood, growing up in Chicago in the early 1970's. Such a great song and band.

  • Well there are 8 that don't want me to make them smile.

  • gg chicago

  • No, he was simply a GUN NUTT and, sorry to say, got what he had coming,....you don`t PLAY with those dangerous needless STUPID THINGS people ! Terry found this out the hard way

  • @ukesruletheydo That's a ridiculous reply, shame on you. god might forgive you.

  • True that! the media scum bags!

  • Great memories. I’m not going to bring up specific times because I don’t know any of you people and it wouldn’t make any difference to you anyway. But great memories.

  • Melhores músicas.. *-*

  • I'm playing this for high school band and i have got to learn this song soon.

  • I LOVE THIS BAND....Marsi @ ACE EVENTS at the OC Market place

  • @drummermzl ours too actually

  • @MikeDeLue same here, i think every high school is doing something tht is from the time of Chicago. :3

  • This is part of our marching show this year :)

  • @drummermzl me too the whole show is chicago!!!

  • @bigbirdweb woah sweet!! Ours is supposed to be kinda upbeat and city themed. The drumline hasn't gotten all of the music or the full details/ decided theme of the show (we just got a new band director during band camp, so it's been a little confusing XD) But I believe our show will be consisting of make me smile, living for the city, new york state of mind, new york, new york, and conga :D Make me smile is super fun to play! :) Hope your band enjoys it as much as we do!

  • I heard they did a whole song to this. Is that true?

  • @87cadillachearse Chicago performed a lengthy Suite on the Chicago II album, written by trombonist James Pankow called, "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" whose Overture was "Make Me Smile". The songs following this one were: "So Much to Say, So Much to Give", "Anxiety's Moment" (instrumental), "West Virginia Fantasies", "Colour My World", "To Be Free", and "Now More Than Ever", the conclusion of Make Me Smile. A shortened version of "Make Me Smile" was also released for airplay on AM radio.

  • Is this the only Chicago song that Peter Cetera didn't lead?

  • @tpir1972 Prior to his untimely death, the multi-instrumentalist Terry Kath was the lead on many songs. His unique "smoky" voice was the front and soul of Chicago.

  • @klangbunruang

    That was deep, man

  • this song makes me think of mark spitz practicing for the 1972 olympic games in munich germany

  • How's about the whole song, aschloch?

  • Some of the best instrumenalist in the business. Terry was a kick ass guitars and everyone else was at the top of there game. Terry death was the end of the greatest era Chicago Transet Authority ever was to know.

  • Put the whole song!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @2:15 it's become greater even! lovely!!

  • A great song! i almost forgot this was a rock band! really went downhill when they let cetera sing lead.

  • @luv2stampinup Cetera always traded off leads with the others. What messed Chicago up was Terry Kath's death. Terry was the soul and oomph of Chicago. Then there is what I call the "Rod Stewart Disco Phase Syndrome" artists get into, even the great songwriters like Rod Stewart and Elton John and even groups like Led Zeppelin get into where they go too commercial or just burn out and run out of their genius ideas. The Beatles were maybe smart to break up when they did. They never hit that phase.

  • Great Music, Great Group! Fir what music is today, you can really appreciate what these musicians "put down".

  • @nagee76 and @TheNikolai6969 - this version of "Make Me Smile" is the longer one cut from the "Ballet For a Girl in Buchannon", a suite of 7 songs from the album 'Chicago II'. The suite also includes the song "Colour My World". There is also a single version of "Make Me Smile"-better edited than this one-that was played on the radio. Look for a version that's around 3 minutes long.

  • yes the horns certainly were great!

  • I love this music.

  • love this group especially the old chicago.the horns were great.

  • WHAAT!?? only 116000 views!??xD

  • Jam On Boys~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • when music was played with instruments and by musicians

  • @rachelynn1000 I loved this band 40 years ago and still do.

  • @rachelynn1000 damn right!!

  • @rachelynn1000 Actually that was one of the refreshing things about Chicago. They were one of the few rock bands with musical instruments. A few others played music, not just noisy chords, on guitars, but very few had regular members in a brass section.

  • @rachelynn1000 Check out Southern University playing this song

  • This was my dads song when he came back from Nam...

  • how come chicago fans chicago have not been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame? madonna she is there ? chicago 20+albums !!! 2011 and still no recognition? pissed off

  • Once upon a time, Chicago kicked tail with the best of them.

  • This song makes me want to buy a horse?

  • @SLOPPYVOMIT this comment made me smile

  • Terry Kath did not commit suicide. He was drunk at a party and was fucking around with a gun he didn't realize was loaded. The way I understand it, there were witnesses who will attest to that.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN You are absolutely correct.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN He was playing Russian Roulette and he knew it had a bullet in the chamber. I was around back then and I remember it.

  • @Jay435No, I don't believe it. I think you're wrong. I was also around back then, and I've heard for years that he was drunk and playing around with a gun that he did not realize was loaded.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN Unfortunately I'm not wrong. Terry's behaviour became more and more reckless as he got heavily into drugs and alcohol and he was quite the daredevil and scared the crap out of the other band members routinely. This is not secret information btw. He reminds me alot of Lowel George from Little Feat - the two of them were self destructive and they eventually self destructed like many from my era.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN

You're absolutely right - it wasn't suicide, it was a very unfortunate (but reckless) accident.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN Yeah. There was no suicide. I did read he was trying to clean it though. But I know he didn't commit suicide.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN Still killed himself bro, whether it was intentional or not. When a man pulls the trigger of a gun on himself, he, by definition, has shot/killed himself. Say the bullet did not fatally wound him.. wouldn't you then argue that he shot "himself"... I'm sure you can figure it out :P

  • @genowinks, He accidentally shot himself, he did not commit suicide. Kind of a big difference, chief. Not so sure you can figure it out . (-8

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN ... You have some how twisted my words to come to the conclusion that I had said he committed "suicide"... No, on the contrary. In fact, I only said that he quite literally, KILLED HIMSELF. Not that he committed suicide; to say this would imply that it was intentional. :) my smiley faces are better btw hehe.

  • @genowinks 'ello how are you today?

  • @TheJohn584 I'm fuckin trippin bro! Nah just kidding, but id like to be. Good thing I've got some acid ;)

  • @genowinks burn a hole in your soul with that shit,,,, step away.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN ...Thought he electrocuted himself in the bath?...by accident?

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN

Your right it was not a suicide. I was around the corner at a girlfriends house in Ca. when it happened. It was an accident. He was playing with a gun, similar to Russian Roulette, and he didn't know it was loaded.

  • Oh Chicago... you make me smile, feel happy .....but why is the song cut abruptly ?

  • I did'nt like Chicago when i was a kid growing up in the 70's, now i think they'er absolutely awesome their music is so timeless! The sign of a true supergroup!!

  • HEY NIFFELHEM000:

WHY DIDN'T YOU POST THE REST OF THE SONG?.... IT'S NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT THE OTHER

    HALF.....

  • ??????

  • My school band is playing this and 3 other songs by chicago

  • Terry, you were a genius! WHY kill yourself?!

  • @borgduck SHUT UP!

  • Next time, I'll watch the "with real lyrics version".

  • this song is Ballet For A girl In Buchannon

  • 4 people are from detroit

  • Is there anybody who can listen to this without playing air drums?

  • @pimacc Nope. This person doesn't exist.

  • Great Stuff - Terry Kath is missed!

  • Your missing 5 seconds of the end of the song, which actually has (2) parts Make Me Smile and Now More Than Ever. On their reissue the mixed both parts together. Downloaded as Make Me Smile (Complete)

  • Ahh, I never get tired of hearing the great Terry Kath. Rock on in heaven brother. We love you.

  • We're playing this jazz band. I love the vibe of the music, It just makes you want to dance.

  • i was 18 yrs old when i first heard this song on the radio...what a classic tune then...and now!

  • "Make Me Smile" is a song written by James Pankow for the rock band Chicago. Part of Pankow's Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon song cycle/suite, it was recorded for their second album Chicago II (1970). Terry Kath sang the lead vocal.

Terry also sang "Colour My World"!
