I hated this song. It depresses me, it reminds me of some shit that would be played during Vietnam days. I feel like I'm about to throw up thinking about Vietnam and this song at the same time. Depressing my soul.
Who is the Chicago of today? Category: Modern Band that's just as solid, creative, and technically excellent, yet truly musical in every sense of the word. Your response?
@L0c0VidE0 Music today doesn't have meaning for some reason. Unlike the good old days where music actually meant something and a select few artists today, music is crap. Auto tuned, meaningless, crap.
@mrsandwichmafiaman ... =D yeah, that kind of scare me when music I love gets genderfied and watered down. I do like that they at least love the song and the band. Anyway, back to the song for me....I love vocals in this song as well. He just pours so much happiness and soul into it. I've loved Chicago since I was a little kid. Thank god for good old radio back in the day when they actually played music by players.
My uncle got me loving this group back in 67 when I was 7, they were C.T.A. saw them over 32 times in the course of 40 years! Will always be my one & only favorite band!!
@Gomek2 Agreed. What drew me into this band, besides Pankow's excellent horn arrangements, was Kath's intensity and talent. I have bought vinyl LPs over the last 5 months for Chicago I through XI and will go no further. RIP Terry Kath
@fatcampguitarist Chicago III and most of IV are probably their best work. The music and image of old school Chicago are burn deeply into my phyche as that's what my siblings who were older than me back in the early 70's played a lot of. I thought Terry was related so how as a young kid being that my brother's friends looked like the band members. :)
good sound quality! what the fuck happened? during that tremendous jazz guitar solo.....you must repost.... i have over 600 albums & cannot find chicago2...damn
Probably the most played song on my 8 track and L.P. ever. This was and is the greatest rock band of all-time. Terry Kath, the very best rock guitarist ever. Wow, this was some incredible music that will live on forever.
The "Chicago" sound takes me back to the late '60's and '70's when music was music! It was so full of hard driving melodies, plus great slow songs that made me think of first loves. KEEP ON TRUCKIN' CHICAGO!!!!!!!
I play this in my 7th and 8th grade jazz band, and we sound spectacular. Lol, I actually do smile every time we play the song. It's by far my favorite, and it sounds amazing with the arrangement. The composer, James Pankow, and the arranger, Peter Blair, have some extreme talent. The way the trumpets rise up as the saxes have the melody is amazing, and I must say that this is an awe-inspiring song.
@TheWoogie2 Keep jamming the horn man! I played trombone when I was your age but I was never very good at reading music, so I got discouraged, rather than just enjoying it and playing by ear. I wish I would have kept it up so I could play like Trombone Shorty ;)
10 dislikes? how can that be? must be 10 retards passed this way. This song should be fucking etched in the annals of world history. Fuck the HoF,its a political exercise anyway, you have to pay to get in. This song and band are what defined America in all its greatness and glory.
@sledj567 Possibly they dislike it because of the boring still picture on the video. Or because the music ended so abruptly. I'm sure that no one actually dislikes the song.

@bigbirdweb woah sweet!! Ours is supposed to be kinda upbeat and city themed. The drumline hasn't gotten all of the music or the full details/ decided theme of the show (we just got a new band director during band camp, so it's been a little confusing XD) But I believe our show will be consisting of make me smile, living for the city, new york state of mind, new york, new york, and conga :D Make me smile is super fun to play! :) Hope your band enjoys it as much as we do!
@87cadillachearse Chicago performed a lengthy Suite on the Chicago II album, written by trombonist James Pankow called, "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" whose Overture was "Make Me Smile". The songs following this one were: "So Much to Say, So Much to Give", "Anxiety's Moment" (instrumental), "West Virginia Fantasies", "Colour My World", "To Be Free", and "Now More Than Ever", the conclusion of Make Me Smile. A shortened version of "Make Me Smile" was also released for airplay on AM radio.
@tpir1972 Prior to his untimely death, the multi-instrumentalist Terry Kath was the lead on many songs. His unique "smoky" voice was the front and soul of Chicago.
Some of the best instrumenalist in the business. Terry was a kick ass guitars and everyone else was at the top of there game. Terry death was the end of the greatest era Chicago Transet Authority ever was to know.
@luv2stampinup Cetera always traded off leads with the others. What messed Chicago up was Terry Kath's death. Terry was the soul and oomph of Chicago. Then there is what I call the "Rod Stewart Disco Phase Syndrome" artists get into, even the great songwriters like Rod Stewart and Elton John and even groups like Led Zeppelin get into where they go too commercial or just burn out and run out of their genius ideas. The Beatles were maybe smart to break up when they did. They never hit that phase.

Look for a version that's around 3 minutes long.
@rachelynn1000 Actually that was one of the refreshing things about Chicago. They were one of the few rock bands with musical instruments. A few others played music, not just noisy chords, on guitars, but very few had regular members in a brass section.
how come chicago fans chicago have not been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame? madonna she is there ? chicago 20+albums !!! 2011 and still no recognition? pissed off
Terry Kath did not commit suicide. He was drunk at a party and was fucking around with a gun he didn't realize was loaded. The way I understand it, there were witnesses who will attest to that.
@Jay435No, I don't believe it. I think you're wrong. I was also around back then, and I've heard for years that he was drunk and playing around with a gun that he did not realize was loaded.
@TIMOTHYSAARINEN Unfortunately I'm not wrong. Terry's behaviour became more and more reckless as he got heavily into drugs and alcohol and he was quite the daredevil and scared the crap out of the other band members routinely. This is not secret information btw. He reminds me alot of Lowel George from Little Feat - the two of them were self destructive and they eventually self destructed like many from my era.

Your right it was not a suicide. I was around the corner at a girlfriends house in Ca. when it happened. It was an accident. He was playing with a gun, similar to Russian Roulette, and he didn't know it was loaded.
I did'nt like Chicago when i was a kid growing up in the 70's, now i think they'er absolutely awesome their music is so timeless! The sign of a true supergroup!!
wow!!! wake up sunshine!! timeless and unforgettable forever to the day i die chicago transit authority to chicago 11 were pure! terry kath was the engine and catylist of the greatest american band in my lifetime iam blessed by my dad who introduced me to real music when i was a wee boy thankyou dad and thankyou chicago!!!!
Your missing 5 seconds of the end of the song, which actually has (2) parts Make Me Smile and Now More Than Ever. On their reissue the mixed both parts together. Downloaded as Make Me Smile (Complete)
"Make Me Smile" is a song written by James Pankow for the rock band Chicago. Part of Pankow's Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon song cycle/suite, it was recorded for their second album Chicago II (1970). Terry Kath sang the lead vocal.
I hated this song. It depresses me, it reminds me of some shit that would be played during Vietnam days. I feel like I'm about to throw up thinking about Vietnam and this song at the same time. Depressing my soul.

"Make Me Smile" is a song written by James Pankow for the rock band Chicago. Part of Pankow's Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon song cycle/suite, it was recorded for their second album Chicago II (1970). Terry Kath sang the lead vocal.
Terry also sang "Colour My World"!
