Stephen King has been writing since the 70's. He writes all sorts of books that are great, and some have even been adpated to movies. Stephenie Meyer doesn't even deserve a name that STARTS like his, yet alone any fame. Having read every single twilight book, I can verify that they are bad. There's spelling mistakes, grammar and it's trashy. The main character is simply a plain, boring and dull girl who the reader can liken herself to. They are also crap. There should be way more fighting and blood and way less crappy 'Ooh, I love you Edwad, bone me hard', 'But I can't Bella, I'm gay!'. Of course young girls won't feel threatened by the books, Edward is nothing like a real man.

Um, I enjoy both Stephen King and Stephine Meyer's books, thank you. Actually I prefer Stephen King's works, because they are more diverse and much less predictable. However, Stephine Meyer is currently a 'hot' author, and therefor very popular.
Popular does not equal amazing author.
Stephen King's books will probably last long after Meyer's. I know that if the world were coming to an end, one of the first books I would grab is my copy of Rose Madder.
But that's only my opinion.

@TheNovelAmateur I apologize, I did slightly confuse Meyer for J.K. Rowling, (who I thought was number 2.) Turns out, that's Stephanie Meyer, the last person who should be on the list. Personally, all the Star Wars novel writers are better. And Stephen King (and J.K. for that matter) are beyond Stephanie's magnitude. Sorry, fangirl.

When you mentioned merchandise you really fell flat on your agurment. If a series has to put all its support on merchandise then its not a good series. Stephen King never did what Twiligh did. (make fan group rivals, toys for burger king and have a old woman, who should know better, support them) Stephen King just wrote books and the only other format they went was movies, mini series or audio books. He had the STORY keep the books going and not have merchandise pull the cart like Twilight did.
