The point is that Depeche Mode stopped making cute, mildly witty synth-pop, and attempted to be "meaningful". In this they failed, because their lyrical and musical talents are not strong enough to support this. Think how fatuous the lyrics of "Master and Servant" and "Everything Counts" are: they could have been written by a 12-year old. Later Depeche Mode, like "emo" and "goth", doesn't carry emotional depth or subtlety. The tragedy of later Depeche Mode is that it aims high, and misses.
This first album is a bit more upbeat and spritely than the following albums, most probably because the primary song writer at that time was Vince Clarke (who went on to be part of Yazoo and later Eurasure). He left soon after the release of this album.
I kind of lost interest in Depeche Mode after Vince Clarke left. They'd started so well, then suddenly they seemed to go downhill... It was only later I discovered that this was when Vince Clarke left the band. Wish he'd stayed, and Lenor-head had gone instead. Still, at least we got Yazoo and Erasure, so it wasn't a total loss.
@amylNRG yeah, thank god Martn Gore took over the band's principle song writing. Yeah, DM had a rough start with A Broken Frame, but it got better with Some Great Reward, Black Celebration, etc. I love this band through all of it's phases, it grew with the times, unlike Yazoo. And Erasure only got popular because of a gay flash game. Hope Vince clarke is happy with his association with a unicorn sailing over rainbows
@amylNRG I never saw post-Clarke Depeche Mode as emos. Yes, they did appeal to goth culture for a while, but they've gained tons of fans after the departure of Clarke. I'm not an emo for listening to Depeche's music, I dislike that genre of music altogether. Just because their lyrics and tones were more angsty and darker doesn't mean that you can just generalize depeche into that classification, I don't know why you dislike them that much.
THE BEST CONCERN EVER WENT O.M.D AND THE DEPECHE MODE ROCK THE ROSE BOWL TOO BAD FOR A GIRL THAT I WAS SO IN LOVE WITH HER SHE DICHT ME @ THE LAST MINUTE, BUT ENDED TAKING A 2 GIRLS I USED TO SAY IT WAS MY SISTER(SANDRA) SHE WENT TO BE WITH THE LORD NOW. Even though DM sound has kind of stalled in the last years, its contribution to pop music is unvaluable. Their first recording 'Speak and Spell' raids in like few debuts remembered. How many bands were playing music such interesting, with this high-topped quality and very into a rather new understanding as DM? Ultravox, Tuxedomoon? It reminds a little of Kraftwerk, that's true, but still has a sound which is unique to it. This is definitely a masterwork.
@uwaobear I think you might be right,it is slighty different than my LP version of the song. The LP version doesn't have the hand claps in the chorus part.
Today, i bought from Amazon the collector's Edition of Speak and Spell. That was a new year purpose, one Depeche Mode studio album each month, which means, i'm going to have all of them by the end of 2O1O...!!!! i love DM....!!!!!!!!!!
Ahh yeah the memories! With a little bit of imagination, you could say this song was plagiarized in France in 1986! "Adelaide" by Arnold Turboust & Zabou just sounds TOO close to this...
so classic.. awesome synth..

Many point to Clarke's meaningless lyrics in this (and others of the album's) songs, but I find them wonderful!
Besides, they never meant to make sense, just to be listened to and enjoyed.

But there wouldn't be a Depeche Mode without Kraftwerk.

If it's a choice between making thousands of people happy and being a vapid proto-emo, I imagine Vince Clarke is satisfied with his choices.

By the way, the transfer from the vinyl, rather than playing down the songs adds some dynamics to the sound which makes it very joyful!

This sounds like a EP version. The intro is different from the original vinyl. Perhaps the amp is adjusted differently.
