thats beast. i got a 66 coupe deville and i am building up the 429 in it. Going .060 over->custom cam->port and polish heads->port and polish intake->full msd ignition->fuel injection->headers->dual exhaust with flowmasters @ 2 1/2 from headers all the way back->dyno'd and tuned. I'll be posting some vids in about 2-3 months when i am done and get back in town to start on it!!!
those 472-500 caddie motors are an over looked treasure. even a stocker w/a rebuild is a torque monster. as far as gas mileage, who cares. these idiots want to go fast and save on gas. go get a KIA.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Mercedes vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and EFi injectors clean as new!
@superglidedyna i love how people always think big blocks get bad gas milege, in some cases they get better mpg because they dont have to work as hard to move the car.
It can be done better than most would imagine, check out those Air Ride autocross-demonstration thingies at the next car show, they throw Air Ride on big ass Impalas and they handle like champs. Its very hard to believe how good, not just fair, these Air Ride systems are making these great fullsize cars handle until you see it with your own eyes.
i love your car .. maybe i should get a olds455 now that i think about it in my 1984 diesel cadillac conversion fuck its a heavy car i was just gona put 305 in it with a 700r4 any suggestions what i should do what kind of engine and trans would be the best for mileage and power?
honestly, if your going for a good balance of power fuel economy, i would have almost always said chevy 350 runnng a dual pattern cam, vortec heads (or similar) and an edelbrock intake with a 4 barrel with a 700r4, but with a car that heavy, getting a cad 500 wouldnt be a bad idea, if your rear end and transmission can handle a big block (dont know 80's cars that well, but i would guess it would probably be ok) there is also a company in california that makes parts for the cad 472 and 500.
That's bull. I have owned many of both type of cars, chevy and cadillac. Both offer excellent engineering. Though when cadillac was a seperate division they were far ahead of all companies even back into the early years when they integrated the first electronics and controls into vehicles. You know the LS series chevy motors are of the most advanced motors in production today. Dig the name though, I agree.
i wouldn't say chevy offers excellent engineering...heads suck...low deck height makes for optimal rod to stroke ratios next to impossible to achieve...exhaust valves for the center cylinders right next to each makes for a hot spot...and for the LS engines? hell yea they are good...kind of an improved 472/500 design, dont you think? oh yea, that 500 in the vid probably still gets 18mpg if he keeps his foot out of it...
by the way, I do have a 350 built...but if i was to do it again i would want it to be a cadillac 500 for a host of reasons...the blocks and heads are nickel...as in diesel nickel the factory cranks are stronger than a lot of after market forged pieces, in a cad 472/500 its not uncommon to still see the cross hatch pattern from the factory hone job after 200k miles...so when my newly rebuilt chevy dies in oh say 6months..im settin my sights on a 500 and not lookin back.
@gokartsrule its not advanced...but it has come a long way...the new LS9 has piston squirters, and the engine is capable of handling lots of horsepower and torque...the materials and strengthening are what make the LS engines on top of their game...and are still viable in todays markets...i wouldn't be surprised if a GDI version sees its way into production soon...very soon...hopefully in trucks and vettes first
Thanks, I have 2" Supercomp Hooker headers, 3" Summit Racing X pipe, 3" Dynomax "Super Turbo" mufflers, and 3" tailpipes custom made from welding bends together. The Dynomax mufflers have a mellow sound and still flow better or as good as most of the harsh sounding chambered mufflers.
were going to do the same!

I would NOT do a 305, they are really weak, I had a friend with a 305 in a chevy truck and it was super slow.
