It's actually cruel NOT to give hamsters a ball. In the wild they would have a territory of around 3miles. They would cover this area every day, in search of food/water. A ball is a way of allowing a hamster to satisfy this instinct, without the danger of being stepped on or lost. It also provides a source of "enrichment" for hamsters and keeps them occupied. This has been proven to give them longer happier lives. So in short, anyone who thinks hamster balls are cruel HASN'T done their homework.

@scotlandw8 - Well, in the wild, it's survival of the fittest. Whoever is able to live until adulthood will be passing on their genes. And if they sense that their pup wont survive (deformed, etc) then they'll eat em. They dont want to have bad genes passed down. Although they're in captivity, they still have that natural instinct, as hamsters were wild at one point in time.
