One of the things I love about this scene in the movie is the implication that Dr. Manhatten travelled back in time to create himself. In actual religions there is debate about whether god created himself. Well this one did, and here's how.
@RebornMB An unseen person slams the door, starts up the gizmo and "locks in the program". Who would have done that? Nobody present seemed to dislike him. Also the suggestion that Manhatten can possibly create temporal copies of himself and visit any part of his own timeline (is that what's going on with his duplicates?), ISTM he would certainly have visited the moment of his birth, if nothing else to investigate the circumstances.
@tarjay35 - "That smile he gives when he's first locked into the chamber because he think he's going to be let out, SHATTERS MY FUCKING SOUL EVERYTIME I SEE IT." - Every time I watch Jeanie run away as he screams "don't leave me" in his time of need. I feel my heart fall through the floor
Jenny leaves him there to die....then later curses her boyfriend who is now blue and omnipresent when he leaves her for a hotter, younger babe. Karma's a bitch.
What happened? is it because he went in there with a watch or is that what generally happens to people who stroll into an instric field remover thingmajiggy?
Thats a shame their not real, or not locked away in a bunker, or not possible to turn into a god-like being when walking into it because i'd run into one anyday
This was a 1 and trillion, trillion thing, "fate" if thats what you believe in. Just random chance if thats your thing. Anyone else that tried it would die. Adrian uses the same machine to dispose of bodies later in the movie.
Exactly my point. Although human life may seem insignificant, that is the beauty of it. How can something so meaningless continue to exist, to grow, to adapt? How do humans find a purpose in life when there is none? Its amazing.
If I had his powers I would definitely think the opposite. Just think how much good you could do in the world with those powers. I'd also grow to envy human life, at least human life is finite you know their will be an end, making everything you do much more special. Being immortal, you lose the appreciation for small things knowing you wont die.
@Dawid4Real lol no, the door shut behind him, and something activated so they couldn't re open the door and let the radiation out (as a safety precaution) she just walked away because she dident want to watch him die.
Why would the machine turn on after people taking off work and heading home? Isn't that machine like a bank vault? Doesn't make any senses, people left and turn on a machine which is powerful and danger.
@OMGOMGIWANT as a man, in what would one day become history id like to say id use those powers for good.
id like to say that, but it would be a lie, the best out come of someone getting that kind of power is what happanes in the film, they grow detached from humanity and eventualy just wander of to find more intresting things to do.
although id like to think id at least reset the earth reacurces/ biosphere as a farewell gift.
@HotBroodish Don't believe TheUnwrittenWriter... Janey and Oesterman were dating at the time of the accident. Laurie is the second Silk Spectre, whom I don't believe was even BORN at the time of the Doc's accident. The woman here is Janey Slater, Oesterman's co-worker at the lab. In fact, when you see Janey in present day, she is in middle age while Dr. Manhattan hasn't aged a bit.
I hate that she goes "I'm sorry Jon, but I can't" at that part, because in the comic it fit SOOOO WELL when he's the blue man and she's like, "this relationship sucks bruddah." xD I know, I know, it's a movie. But still. SO PERFECT.
For gods sakes ( no pun intended) he didn't become a god he just became a very powerful person, just becuz u have super powers doesn't mean your a god
@GDfanatic213 Wrong, he is god. He fully realizes and becomes god at the end of the comic when he says he is going to create life. If that isnt a sign that hes god idk what is.
To become god-like by accident is truly food for thought. And upon becoming I would always ponder why, like the Big Bang Theory of the universe. What power does the idea of fate really have in the universe? Abstract thoughts here, but then our universe is full of abstractness and paradoxes. This character symbolizes some of the fears of those abstractions. Impressive and deep comic no doubt!
It was completely a freak thing. Anyone trying it again would end up like the scientists at the end of the movie, just dust. You could gamble that you would become a God, but are you going to risk everything?
No matter the movie's faults, it had amazing and powerful scenes, not to mention very thought provoking. To me Watchmen is the greatest and deepest comic book made.
I don't understand the story for this, if they have an easily repeatable experiment that can make people into gods then why aren't people experimenting with that? Why is there only Doctor Manhattan?
i read about it online and the only reason he ever was able to reassemble himself because he was clockworker and was able to put together and take apart things such as himself or any matter he pleases to do so with
@SanjiSan92 first off energy is matter, second off energy cannot be created or destroyed, converting something into pure energy neither destroys what you started with nor creates the energy; turning one thing into another is conversion not creation.
