@najhoant No. The deerstalker was drawn by the one who Illustrated the article, since Holmes was published in a magasin. Later, when the storys and the drawings where famous, Doyle made Holmes wear the hat in one case. (Watson didn't like the hat^^). So the hat is not original, just like the "Elementary, my dear Watson" which was made up by an actor.

@najhoant Once he's mentioned wearing a floppy eared traveling cap which could be interpreted as a deerstalker. His hat is described differently in a different story and a deerstalker was the only hat that fit both descriptions. It's a country hat though and wouldn't have been worn in London. The illistrations of Holmes wearing a deerstalker show him like on the moor or somewhere outside London solving a case.
