Neither Diablo or Baal or Mephisto can be killed they are only trapped into the soul stones. The soul stone you crushed in Diablo 2 was Mephistos which means Diablo and Baal is still alive only trapped.

@xenrayz Well actually, in the ending cinematics of Diablo 2, before the expansion, it is shown that Diablo's soulstone is crushed as well. Even still, I believe this only was meant to prevent them from manifesting in Sanctuary, but now that the Worldstone is gone, it doesn't matter.
