The late great Elmer Bernstein. Magnificent Seven is one of many classic film scores he composed during his long, spectacular career. The performance is wonderful by this world class orchestra.
This is real film music... not the majority of junk that is in films today.
Where and when was this video taken? It truly is wonderful to see Elmer and the un-named orchestra playing this terrific well known theme! The place is packed and the audience is right next to the orchestra. Those folks sure got their money's worth that evening. Thanks so much for the posting! Elmer was always one of my favorite composers. The world is a lesser place without him. Long live the 'king' Elmer Bernstein!
@Tinsby It's the huge Royal Albert Hall in London, in the very early 2000s, I believe with the London Symphony Orchestra (one of the world's best; they played the original soundtrack scores to most of the Williams-Spielberg-Lucas collaborations!).
Yes this was recorded at the special concert films music at the Proms in the magnificent Royal Albert Hall in 2001; It was performed with the BBC Concert orchestra under the author's leadership. You can review the whole program at the BBC PROMS ARCHIVE. Just search for "elmer Bernstein at the proms". I was lucky to attend the performance with my son and we had a great evening as usual at the Proms.
I always wondered what composers actually do when they make the gestures because the musicians always seem to ignore them and look at their sheet music?
@Zanarkke They aren't ignoring him, it may look like it but the trick is reading your sheet music and keeping an eye on the conductor at the same time for timing and cues.
@scottnoris106 It's Tuesday, 14 August 2001, at the Royal Albert Hall, London, Concert 32 in that year's BBC Proms season. The concert was titled 'Hollywood's Golden Age' and much of the music wasn't Bernstein's own. For instance there was Herrmann's music for 'Taxi Driver'. Bernstein is conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra. (And having a ball.)
Really amazing. And I couldn't help but notice that at 1:06 the tune sounded exactly as the beginning of Halcali's song Twinkle Star. Now I know where they got it from! Maybe it was really intentional? Anyways, loved this piece.
Surely the greatest western movie theme ever. However, if you've got the facility, play the short piece (during the third minute of this clip) that accompanies the trip back down the hill in the empty hearse, at full blast, and visualize that part of the movie. It will make your spine tingle! This is the only time in the movie it is heard.
And, Elmer, was a southpaw, too -- conducting with the baton in the left-hand is not easy, given that orchestras come in contact with precious few lefties.
You're right. Nothing beats the composer conducting his own piece himself. This is a rare opportunity of watching the maestro in action. Kudos to Geoffers008 for sharing with us this wonderful video.
Naaaaaaaaa........! it's a joke of course, a great theme for a great movie with great actors...... it's always a pleasure to see it on screen in Paris
Oh my God, I've been looking for this for a long time!!! Thank you so much!!! Now if only someone would kindly upload some concerts of Jerry Goldsmith's I would be very grateful... Long live the masters of film music!!!
Gotta be the best movie theme ever written!! And isn't Bernstein's music so distinctive11

What a rare treat to see the Maestro in action...I love his rather "descriptive" style of conducting. Thank you for posting these "prom" videos.

@88011 Heck, they even remixed the main theme of The Magnificent Seven in the middle of that song!!!

@avatarnarutochuck That is as written originally, not a remix.
