You can se on setting > battery Status (or something like that) and you can see the source of the power, in this case there are only two: Batter and The Cable.
When the battery is charging the PSP is taking power from the cable.

I think i can give an explanation. This phenomenon is due to the electricity running from the wire that you plugged into the yellow plug on the PSP. It only temporarily gives your PSP electricity but only last about a few seconds or so after removing it. Thats what SONY galleries do to the PSPs.However i think that it is not good for the PSP to be running on this type of "charging", like in most computers you would try not to use the computer while charging it.
