thanks for your Great informative videos solarcookingnut : ) I'm trying out making my own bBBQ briquettes from newspaper and soaked paper. i want to add extra heat and speed to my solar over i noticed its been done currently by scouts and campers. clever idea! i found it at safelygatheredin STOP blogspot STOP com/ 2008/10/how-to-make-cardboard-box-oven.html
Thank you much for uploading your videos and taking the time to write all your notes in the side. I am going to try some of your methods and make my own solar cooker. This is amazing information. By the way, I have yet to try this, but I read that at night you can use a solar oven as a fridge-- it radiates heat out of the food or water into the air, lowering the temp as much as 20 degrees. Some people make ice this way.
Nice vid. One possible thing for a bit of greater efficiency of the system is to insulate the metal bowl since when air flow comes in contact with it heat will be wasted. Not sure what to use, a box is better than nothing, but styrofoam or spray foam, or even newspaper taped around it is possible.
The nesco cooker I have is down in a box insulated with newspaper. you can indeed put the bowl down inside another bigger with newspaper in between. The curved reflectors are intense enough to make it hot enough on the inside to not have to worry about insulating around the pan. the curved reflectors work pretty much like a parabolic cooker, so I haven't worried much about the temps inside because the focal point gets the job done really well. Thanks for the comment!
lol i was looking for something more for free then safer lol
I would just be heating up the pool a few hours before wanting to go in for a dip in the winter, its just me and hubby we have no guests, neighbors, or kids, though I do wonder if it blinds pilots (up in the sky) lol
LOL, well, as long as you wear some sunglasses to protect your eyes, WHY NOT, LOL.
But if you study up on how to make a solar water heater, it would actually work faster. just type in "how to build a solar hot water heater for swimming pool" in your search engine, there are plans out there. Also, consider...building a greenhouse structure over your pool if its not too big. alot of different ways to do it safely and on the cheap. hope this helps.
You know... I had been looking into it but I havent found a video I thought made it clear HOW to build one. When I checked into installing a solar hot water heater its at $6000. I'd much rather throw a a bucket of hot water on my wood stove for hot water then all these pricey contraptions its getting nuts lol
if you have good sunlight you can lay a black hose (Filled with water) out in the sun. the blackness soon absorbs the sun's heat and heats the water inside. after a few hours (c30degrees temp) the water will be so hot you wont be able to touch it
Is C 30 degrees hot or cold? lol I'm bad at my ferenhiets and celcius's... (to my shame)
In otherwords can it be done in the winter as well? Because sometimes hoses freeze in the winter but I'm not too sure if I noticed whether that was in the shade or in the sunlight
I use the wide packaging tape you can get from dollar tree or family dollar. I just form the poster board around the pan and adjust the angle the way I want it, and tape on each side not alot, just a few pieces. I adjust the back up or down by setting the pan itself on a piece of board so the poster board will tilt to the angle I want to direct the sun in the pan correctly. A really easy setup.

Man! I wonder if those reflectors were made large enough if it could actually be used to heat up pool water, think its possible?

yes, but the problem is, you would have everyone with retinal damage going blind from the focal points, falling into the pool and drowning, :0
There are solar pool heaters on ebay that are a much safer option, :)

This is cool! How is the poster board attached to the bowl, please?
