As a classical music aficionado, this is extremely interesting, but nonetheless from a musical perspective, I kind of hate it. A very neat concept, though, but it Sounds rather bad to my ears...
@eethove Maybe you should take that "Classical Music Afficiando" off your calling card if your hearing and aesthetic tastes sort of drop off at the end of the common practice period. This music is older than Bach's was when Mendelssohn resurrected it.
@MuseDuCafe Actually, just a factual correction, Bach wrote the Saint Matthew Passion in 1727, and it was 102 years old when Mendelssohn resurrected it. This piece is 86 years old. However, in response to your claim, my tastes, I assure you, go all across the centuries-- from Gregorianism and Hildegard von Bingen all the way to contemporary composers. As it happens, I am quite a fan of modernists like Shostakovich, Khachaturian, Oleg Eiges, and even many pieces of Henry Cowell himself.
@oracle24401 Ya, deja vu listening to this song. It just makes ur spine start having crazy sensations! Every time I thought about this song when I was little it kept me from falling asleep.
Gotta love Henry Cowell. He was a self taught composer. He brought a lot of new things to the table in music when he investigated into the overtone series and music outside of Western European art music. He also brought us musicians notations with instructions lol. Did you know it takes two players to play this in concert?
@Topographic0ceans If you know of any disturbing or unsettling music, please message me. I have been searching, this is the second song I have found even slightly unsettling in weeks.
@runicrules you should look up A Garden of Bells by R. Murray Shafer... he is a Canadian composer that my friends had to study for their music course. His vocal arrangements are odd, and his instrumentation sometimes even moreso.
@runicrules and, "disturbing" and "unsettling" are some seriously subjective terms. If you want to go by what I commonly get told is disturbing and unsettling, listen to the album Obscura by Gorguts. You might not be a metal fan at all, but these guys are unreal. The album is going on 13 years old now, and is easily still the most complex and avant-garde metal album created. I find it very trance-like, especially if you put on low volume and read the lyrics while listening
I dont really like this piece, it definitely evokes fear and uneasyness out of me but personally i find nothing to truly make me interested in ever wanting to listen to it again
@shagythommy everyone corects me on that when i get pissed off im not gonna worry about "proper" stuff cuz i dont need to in a comment your just being a tight ass who thinks that you have to aim as low as stuff you learn at school cuz you cant think of anything else
I heard this in my Advanced music course in school a couple weeks ago, and I love every minute. It's fascinating. To me, this is the definition of horror.
Incredible how you can almost hear the crying and whining of a Banshee in this. There're so many more sounds you have access to from a piano with extended piano techniques like this one.
I actually thought this was being sung. Crazy how Cowell used the insides of the piano to create this. It's stupid how critics (who heard this when Cowell performed it for the first time) thought it was a horrible idea to used the insides of a piano.
I have been looking for this song forever! I heard it in Elementary music class and when the teacher asked us if there were any songs we wanted on tape, I wanted this song. But, I think I recorded over it. I adore this song because it's so scary!! XD
thank you

Roy Budd loved this technique. I used to do it on our piano. Sweeping across all the keys with my foot on the pedal that is.
