Everyone in the room stopped and watched silently for the whole seven and a half minutes when I found this and played it.. everything stopped when it was over too... magical right?
It's been the end of the world as we know it for a long time already... too bad we haven't realized it yet. We live and die through Apocalypse every day, close our eyes every night with it, and open our eyes every day to it. There will never be words to express this... hence, Johannson has translated our experience through music. Yes, OUR experience, whether you're aware of it, or not. Imagine waking up every day in a different country, every country... a different body... This is life.
Yes, the trailer music to Battle: Los Angeles brought me to Johannsson. I've been listening to a few of the pieces he has made, and I dare say I am extremely impressed! Steiner62, I agree with you 100%. It's sweeping, moving, and simple. Great structure, layers upon layers of depth, in a very simple, singularly focused melody. There's magic here.
I am aside myself after listening to this, being a classically trained musician. This rivals any piece of traumatic work I have ever heard or performed.
to leebax - don't really agree with you on this...why does the music have to be funereal because of a demise of an age? fair enough that's a tried and tested way to accompany a certain visual theme, but i think the music has a depth and gravity that transmits a sense of the era and the ending of it. it might not exactly 'fit' with each image but i'd rather watch the film to this music than some overly sombre death march. both my grandfathers were coal miners and i think they'd agree.
The music is stunning, but I sense a bit of disconnect between the hopeful music and the demise of the industrial age. The music is not funeral, but if you are going to use this visual theme, perhaps it should be. I am not faulting either the music or the visuals, but rather the frame in which they are placed. Does anyone else see this?
If you like this piece then you may be interested in Lisa Gerrard's & Patrick Cassidy's "Immortal Memory". I love that one. And "The Mirror Pool". Not exactly the same, but very, very nice - almost soundtrack-without-the-movie music!
Cheers for the reply mate. I've already heard riceboy sleeps, but thanks for introducing me to Olafur Arnalds. I've had 'Cello Song' on repeat for the last hour - absolutely beautiful :)
Being a 51 year old geezer, with an abnormal life after having epilepsy as a result from a stroke, my wife left me. I also have a university degree, look where it brought me.
Being a 53 year old man, apparently reasonable, perfectly normal home life, marriage, kids, in the teaching life, having a university degree, studying additional philosophy courses, if felt SORRY FOR THE BLOODY COMPUTER!Johannsen is an amazing find.
The man really is an unsung Genius. Bet he sort of likes it that way. Anyone who discovers his music feels like they have discovered a beautiful melodic secret. Maybe if he was really popular & a big "star" the magic would dissipate...drift away.
@Steiner62 i always loved knowing underground artists, doesn have a sence of uniqueness and wow this is some serious underground and unbelivably genious producer, found an unspeakable treasure tonight.
Just epic. The first part of it is like being depressed and hopeless, then in the later parts it's about the determination to continue fighting.

This music would fit perfectly into the movie "Space Odyssey" by Stanley Kubrick

I'm useless. I can think up some quite complex music in my head, that's the easy part.
But knowing what chords, or even what notes I'm thinking of is completely beyond me. It's all just sound to me.

Pfft, you don't know until you try. Get some software like sonar (torrent styleee) and try it out. You might be suprised.
