i just started upright bass. I'm trying to learn proper bowing technique as well as jazz walking. It's so damn hard. I played upright for an hour yesterday and then went back to electric. Honestly I feel like just messing around on upright made me better on electric bass.
@Nateisbored Thanks for watching! This video is SUPER basic. I have plans to make more technique vids soon. Be sure to watch the other videos on bowing basics!
thanks man, this helped alot. im just starting out at my high schools jazz band, and have been playing electric bass for about a year and a half, our jazz band instructor let me know once we start getting into it that im gonna have to make the transition to an upright,
Finally some good, correct jazz bass advice on YouTube! Man, i've wanted to pull my hair out the past hour of watching videos on here! I rarely give right hand advice though, cause there are so many different ways to play. Left hand - basically one or two ways. Right hand - everyone is different it seems. After years of doing it one way, I can no longer change. I have a Marc Johnson-type right hand, for a more modern sound. I've made sure, though, that I pull enough to get a good sound.
Yes... If your name is stanley clarke or Michael Balzary or something like that. If not, at least a year to be good and years to be really good. Cello has nothing to do with bass. You have to learn from beggining.
@IRBaboon188 Absolutely bullshit. I started on bass after seven years of cello and it's helped me tremendously. I've only played bass for a year, but I'm much farther ahead than I could be otherwise.
This is one of the first and best informative videos on upright bass I've found on You Tube thus far. I'm thinkin' bout playin' the instrument myself. This video sure wettens my appetite! Thnx! More videos please...
most likely, full sizes are actually quite large and most people aren't big enough to play one. my bass teacher in her whole years of teachign bass has only seen one or two full size players
And: if you do another video, mebbe tell us about the way you hold the bass or how you are standing without getting a backache, would be cool if your feet were visible ;-)
Hey Bassius! I just went thru all of yer lessons mate... very well done, thanx a lot, this is the kind of info every beginner will be thankful about! After trying to have some questions answered by some other bassists, i really learned to appreciate the way you stress on "if it works for you..." ... ;-)
One questions i still do have: do you have your right thumb resting on the side of the fingerboard to get a grip??
finaly this is the first vid i found where someone isn't slapping it i think just finger playing sounds so much better. i play the electric bass and i so want to get an upright
I really want to pick up upright bass. I want to play it for our school band. I have played a Trumpet for five years, but i am getting tired of it.I have also played electric bass for maybe a year. I mean you know a actual year of playing, trying to learn how to play it. I think it would be easy to switch to one of these instruments, and just need to know where to start. What DvD's could i get to help and theory books? Fret board theory is a big problem for me as well.
Thanks for a great video lesson. I would LOVE to see a lesson on slapping. I have a 25 year old Chechoslovakian upright that I use for Bluegrass but would like to put some life into a Bass break once in a while. Can you slap effectivly without a pickup and amp? Again, THANKS! Jim
It's very cool that you put a bass lesson on there, and an insightful one at that. You get a great sound, even on YouTube. I'll check out the music on your MySpace page when I get a chance.
