The very start where the beam weapon slices through the spaceship has been realised in a space game called Freespace. There is Freespace 1 plus expansion and Freespace 2. It's the only game with gigantic space ships fighting each other with beam weapons while you fly between them in your fighter!
Greatest game ever. Never knew there was an addon, so im gonna play the s*** out of this game again!
