We had a constitutional monarchy in France until 1877. It was the great King Louis-Napoleon who built the modern Paris we know today. after the socialists abolished the constitutional monarchy with a republic, everything turned into a dipshit of 3rd world, unfrench, unclassy people with no sense of identity than being workers in a socialist regime. we couldnt even defend ourselves during the wars because our head of state is not someone who can unite us all in one banner.
the type of government doesnt matter. it is the people in government which matters.
you have may a republic but governed by corrupt politicians so what is the use of a republic when the same people from the same political class and the same cronies and lobbyists are still present? any change of government is expensive but why would trash something that has worked well for a thousand years. its quite useless actually especially when you have a head of state in a republic who cant represent all.
If canadians think the monarchy gives them an identity then maybe canada shouldn't exist in the first place, the monarchy is shared with at least 4 different countries so losing it would not matter because it's not unique.
@Amunication atleast less then 8 or 10% of the worlds nations are Monarchies... I think thats pretty Unique...the rest are either Republics or other forms of Government...
Australia will likely to be the first to abolish monarchy if people there voted for republic in a Yes/No vote should Australian parliament pass law in the future.
According to poll - most Australians go for republic though support for monarchy go up a bit.
That the monarchy is really "in peril" is the wishful thinking of leftards that populate the CBC. The CBC is nothing more than a teet from which anarchists, Marxists, Commies, and socialists who would otherwise be incapable of find work that pays more than minimum wage can suck 6-figure salaries from the Canadian tax payer.
I love Queen Elizabeth II but if Charles takes power and acts in anyway partial to any party, he would have doomed the monarchy!! He would either have to abdicate and hand power over to William, or people would be so annoyed they would, vote to abolish the monarchy.

@KeybladePrincess61 As an American, of mainly English descent, I look favorably on the royals as being a ceremonial head of state. But, I think parliament is necessary. The American system is very good, when educated people turn out to vote. But, every day, I hear some idiot complaining about the government, or a politician, and whats funny is, the ignorant fool either didn't vote, or voted against his own interests because he didn't understand the issue, or the politian's position.

Well, it may sound rather peculiar but we do have a high degree of tolerance! You see in it's different in the U.K than Canada or other Commonwealth Realms. We are emotionally attached to our monarchy or Royal Family, for that matter! Just think, when Princess Di died. Everyone, including me, was saying, "What the hell is wrong with the Queen?" I don't see why should Britain get rid of 1000 years institution in order to establish the republic. Canada, Australia is a different matter. But in Britain, I don't see wy should we go to all that trouble in order to remove this harmless institution. Any event, most republics that have abolished their monarchies, have created simulated constitutional monarchies. These republics have abolished their royal government; yet have given their....
Speaking as a Canadian, do you know how unpopular monarchy is in Canada??? If you say that we have emotional attachment to the monarchy, most of the people here would die laughing.
I know monarchy is unpopular in Canada, I was talking about Britain!
As I have said, Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries will become republic, although, with great difficulty as Monarchy is entrenched in the Canadian constitution and is central to BNA Act of 1867.
By the way, majority of people are not against the monarchy in Canada, they just don't care, just like more than half of the Cdn. population don't vote for PM etc. Cdns. are not intrested in politics in general.
...new republican governments the exact powers of the previous royal government. This begs the question of why change something to something exactly the same?
Monarchy is essential to the political system of U.K. No Prime Minister, in his right mind, would ever create any republican bill because Royal Prerogative is carried out by PM and the Queen has enormous amount of influence on her ministers!...............
...I think personally that people are in Britain not only politically attached to the Monarchy but all emotionally. In our current parliament, hundreds and hundreds of MPs are monarchists only 24republicans! How do you get rid of the monarch? Its not easy, last time they had to execute the monarch. Well, thats inconvincible now...........
Royals, regardless of their escapades and other misdeeds, can not be removed, which explain their excessively lax morals, and indifferences to public opinions. (the queen excepted)
There is no doubt in my mind, that Canada wiith great difficulty, will become a republic after Her Majesty passes away BUT the U.K is another matter. Majority of the people will tell you that they are emotionally attached to the monarchy. In fact, I think that Elizabeths greatest power as Queen is the emotional hold she exerts on her people. I personally am not a labour, conservative or UKIP supporter. I vote for someone who I think will do good for my country. I am not loyal to any...........
..politican but to my Queen, who is above party politics and represents our British culture. And cuture is the glue that keeps us togeather and without it country is a faceless wasteland with some people living on it.
Again, think about republican dynasties! Think about the process of becoming republic and think about the people's emotional attachment to the monarchy and think about the Queen's powers as a constitutional monarch! I would like to know will the president appointed or elected? If appointed, what's the difference and if elected, why to waste millions of pounds for something that is working remarkably well?
...Just think of the bill in the Commons to abolish the Monarchy and set-up the republic of U.K. There would be no room for any other legislation! It would dominate the issue for about a year or two, at least! People will come on streets fighting with each other. Monarchists and minority republicans! Absurd things will be said on the both sides. There would chaos everywhere! According to new polls, majority of the BRITISH people supports the Monarchy (78%).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Silly to say that bad royal behaviour is anything new. George IV? Edward VII? Edward VIII? Prince George (the Duke of Kent)? Possibly reverting to type, rather, after the dutifulness the Windsors held to after the 1936 Abdication imbroglio. Charles is indeed deeply weird but he's unlikely to reign for long; William seems harmless insofar as we know anything of him, and having naughty siblings is par for the head of state course.
Well, monarchy could end in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. but NOT in Britain! In Britain, monarchy had survived through revolutions around the world and yet, they are still there!
Hes history, the next in a line of kings and queens stretching back almost 1,000 years, so deeply embedded in the DNA of Britain and its culture that you could no more remove it than you could remove winter from Canada.
You are from Canada, where I am living at present for some time. But as a British, I was talking about the Briish Monarchy! Tell me, how do you get rid of the monarchy. Every single thing in Britain would have to change in order to remove the monarchy!Monarchy is essential to the political system of U.K. No Prime Minister, in his right mind, would ever create any republican bill because Royal Prerogative is carried out by PM and the Queen has enormous amount of influence on her ministers!......
No, Canada shares the Queen with Britain not the monarchy! After Constitution Act of 1982 was passed, Canada became a truly independent nation with its own Canadian Monarchy, which many people call, "A Maple Crown." We can have a different king/queen if we want to. Many MPs many years ago suggested Prince Andrew (as he have studied in Canada) to become Canada's king and start a new maple dynasty but of course, it was refused by PM and I think the Queen herself!.......
interesting, still I think we should have a republic though.
this could be a great power Canada can give to it's senate that has no real powers atm, and is in serious need of reform, but once it is, it should play the role the queen currently does in selecting a GG.
...If you are going to say that Canada shares the monarchy in Britain then that's not it. We share many political conventions, customs, and unwritten part of the constitution. There is no mention of PM's office in the BNA Act yet we have that because our conventions and customs are inherited by the United Kingdom!
I agree on everything except the Monarchy, IMHO they have too much influence over Canada by deciding the GG. A role like that should be decided by an either appointment (by the PM) and/or election (senate, both house of parliament, or the people). It's time to end rule by birth right once and for all.
and if the queen, who I respect, lives to be the age of her mother, then we have about 20 years to decide on what type of republic Canada or other nations want.
mate, it's time to just end the monarchy, and give the role of it or GG to someone that: 1. Wants it 2. trains for the role, not glommed for it 3. not give it to s/o that doesn't want it, like the current queen.
desbite not waiting it, the queen has accepted the role with honor and dinigly, sacaficing e/t else for it. for that one can not disrespect her. but I also pity her and feel sorry for her, as she never wanted it in the frist place.
give it to someone that wants it, and desreves it!
And if you really think about it, Canadians don't share the monarchy. Canadian monarchy is much more different than the British one. Not only constitutionally but symbolically and ceremonially!
...I think personally that people are in Britain not only politically attached to the Monarchy but all emotionally. In our current parliament, hundreds and hundreds of MPs are monarchists only 24 republican! How do you get rid of the monarch? Its not easy, last time they had to execute the monarch. According to new polls, majority of people supports the Monarchy about 78%..........
...If people are fine with the system we have today and dont mind it at all then it's the PEOPLE'S WISH!Think about republican dynasties!Think about the process of becoming republic and think about the peoples emotional attachment to the monarchy and think about the Queen's powers as a constitutional monarch! would like to know will the president appointed or elected? If appointed, what's the difference and if elected, why to waste millions of pounds for something that is working remarkably well.
I wonder if the documentary makers give any air time to anyone who disagrees with their point of view. Judging from the trailer, it seems highly unlikely. It looks instead like an unpaid political broadcast for the republican cause in Canada (such as it is). More's the pity.
They ought to interview the Canadian political scientist Anthony King, who made mincemeat of the case for abolition in an excellent interview with Brian Stewart aired on CBC in 2002.
I truly do fear that the monarchy will indeed be in great peril when Her Majesty passes away or gives the crown to Charles. astridbelge, with all respects, can the bird fly without feathers?
324wilson 2 years ago
wilson, I'm refering to a famous quote "he takes care the feathers, but forget the dying bird",
you do not prosper the nation by decorating the bird's feathers, just like you do not save a ill man by covering him with finery and stud him with jewels
if you were a more sensible person you would not be overly attached to the royalty's happiness, when thinking that there are many biritish families struggliing to survive

I don't see why should Britain get rid of 1000 years institution in order to establish the republic.

If you say that we have emotional attachment to the monarchy, most of the people here would die laughing.
astridbelge 2 years ago

(the queen excepted)
astridbelge 2 years ago

324wilson 2 years ago
Again, think about republican dynasties! Think about the process of becoming republic and think about the people's emotional attachment to the monarchy and think about the Queen's powers as a constitutional monarch! I would like to know will the president appointed or elected? If appointed, what's the difference and if elected, why to waste millions of pounds for something that is working remarkably well?
324wilson 2 years ago
...Just think of the bill in the Commons to abolish the Monarchy and set-up the republic of U.K.

Hes history, the next in a line of kings and queens stretching back almost 1,000 years, so deeply embedded in the DNA of Britain and its culture that you could no more remove it than you could remove winter from Canada.

we might as well remain mired in history
and go back to horses and carriages then

You are from Canada, where I am living at present for some time. But as a British, I was talking about the Briish Monarchy! Tell me, how do you get rid of the monarchy. Every single thing in Britain would have to change in order to remove the monarchy!Monarchy is essential to the political system of U.K. No Prime Minister, in his right mind, would ever create any republican bill because Royal Prerogative is carried out by PM and the Queen has enormous amount of influence on her ministers!......

just because changing it is complicated, does not mean we have to keep an unjust, and undeserving institution
a fine excuse for remaining mired in history

I kind of like elizabeth II, but who won't be disgusted by the notorious lifestyles of the younger princes and their strutting useless girlfriends?

canada shares the monarchy with britain
astridbelge 2 years ago
No, Canada shares the Queen with Britain not the monarchy! After Constitution Act of 1982 was passed, Canada became a truly independent nation with its own Canadian Monarchy, which many people call, "A Maple Crown." We can have a different king/queen if we want to. Many MPs many years ago suggested Prince Andrew (as he have studied in Canada) to become Canada's king and start a new maple dynasty but of course, it was refused by PM and I think the Queen herself!.......
324wilson 2 years ago
interesting, still I think we should have a republic though.
this could be a great power Canada can give to it's senate that has no real powers atm, and is in serious need of reform, but once it is, it should play the role the queen currently does in selecting a GG.
That's one possible replacement.
KangaKucha 2 years ago 2
...If you are going to say that Canada shares the monarchy in Britain then that's not it. We share many political conventions, customs, and unwritten part of the constitution. There is no mention of PM's office in the BNA Act yet we have that because our conventions and customs are inherited by the United Kingdom!
324wilson 2 years ago
I agree on everything except the Monarchy, IMHO they have too much influence over Canada by deciding the GG. A role like that should be decided by an either appointment (by the PM) and/or election (senate, both house of parliament, or the people). It's time to end rule by birth right once and for all.
and if the queen, who I respect, lives to be the age of her mother, then we have about 20 years to decide on what type of republic Canada or other nations want.
KangaKucha 2 years ago
I hope she lives a long life
just can not bear to have such contemptuous people like william and kate middleton on the throne
how can we have heads of state that are so low and base in characters? (except the queen)
astridbelge 2 years ago
mate, it's time to just end the monarchy, and give the role of it or GG to someone that: 1. Wants it 2. trains for the role, not glommed for it 3. not give it to s/o that doesn't want it, like the current queen.
desbite not waiting it, the queen has accepted the role with honor and dinigly, sacaficing e/t else for it. for that one can not disrespect her. but I also pity her and feel sorry for her, as she never wanted it in the frist place.
give it to someone that wants it, and desreves it!
KangaKucha 2 years ago 2
i bet kate middleton wants it, lol
astridbelge 2 years ago
And if you really think about it, Canadians don't share the monarchy. Canadian monarchy is much more different than the British one. Not only constitutionally but symbolically and ceremonially!
324wilson 2 years ago
that's what referendums and constitutional amendments, or even replacing the old one, if it even exists, with a new one, are for.
yeah I know, it sounds french or soviet, but in the former, it's worked quite well when the government needed changing.
