The ft-897 and FT-857 does considerably better with the Inrad, Collins filters. No, they won't quite keep up with the TS-590 or the TS-2000 with the better filters installed, but it does make a bit of a difference in a noisy environment.
turn on the DSP the far right top button, then press A B C found under the display to turn on all the DSP options the first DNR will kill 75% of the hiss, I love my FT897
@M6PEC Some people do not read their manuals. Yaesu states that as long as the S-meter rises due to static noise, the preamp (on by deault) must be turned off. This is oposit to other brands where preamps are turned off by default. This gives a wrong image of about 12dB. I have the IPO engaged (preamp off) for all bands starting at 14 or 10 Mhz and down. Normally preamps are used on 50, 28, 24 and perhaps 21 Mhz. I have inrad filters installed and love my 897.
Thanks so much for this review. I own an 897D and its become unusable as the noise, like yourself is S7 - S9 most of the time. It looks like the 590 may answer some of my prayers here! I will however keep my 897D (I think) for portable ops or maybe swap it for a 857D when using it out mobile. I have an ATAS120A hence why i would keep the yaesu. I think the 590 will look fab in my shack :-)
@NToombes Hi - thanks for the flowers. As mentioned in the youtube videos - I bought the 590 mainly for its receiver and filtering - and still very impressed and using it every day a few weeks later. You might be interested to listen to some recordings I have made which are on youtube comparing various microphones - recording LSB live off air from the 590 with various mic's, the standard kenwood mic, a heil hand-fist mic, a kenwood MC-90 & now a heil PR-40. Enjoy and keep in touch. 73 - Simon
@cobra148gtldx Hiya! Thanks for the reply! As soon as I saw and heard your 897D i knew it was almost identical to the problem I am suffering from! I thought HF from home was now a thing of the past. Just got to save some pennies up and will visit the Emporium and pick one up! I will also have a listen tomorrow to the various microphones and let you know what I think :-) Neil

Noise reduction as default is set at level 5 for position 1, and for level 2 its set at twenty - both are tweakable

What level do you have nr1 set to? Sounds clearer than my ts 2000 noise reduction.
