I see everyone else is talking about the contrast as well, and that's what I was going to say. However, I actually like the look of the video. I hate it when people over do the contrast and basically start clipping the blacks and whites out.
That being said, maybe a TINY bit of contrast could have been added, lol. ;) Great video though.
It's a pity the black levels are so lifted in this Youtube clip. Not just the camera footage, but the whole video (including the black letterbox, which is foggy gray). Makes the whole image look lower in contrast.
The Alexa is a great camera, closest thing to 35mm yet.
Nah, nah, color grading is like makeup: if you notice it, it's not working. I say that the cinematographer used some grading--just look at the orange tint of the dancing scenes, for example.
He simply didn't choose to mangle the colors like Michael Bay.
who cares about the color grading. everybody always wants overly contrasty color grading. I like a subtle look to video. its much easier on the eyes imo.
I'd say this is definitively not graded (for anyone who was wondering) the dance shots have a distinctive "flat fog" which is indicative of a super-flat raw format, the black paint of the cars also come off with a similar flat haze like look. The obvious evidence (as mentioned) is the lack of any crushed black (which would almost certainly appear in the hallway shot if graded).
Don't forget that the lens plays a role as well...

very nice film like softness. I'm not bothered by the lack of contrast but why is the letterbox not black? it's a muddy gray.
I like that the image is quite soft but it still retains some sharpness. kinda like film really.

@SUPERAMAZINGATOMIC Are you suggesting that we SHOULDN'T make everything overly contrasty and then add shitloads of Teal and Orange? Pure insanity!
FrankPerrotto 2 months ago
@FrankPerrotto Like OMG, I HATE the teal and orange look. ;)

@sernoserbo it's also possible that this *was* color graded, just not very well.

Pretty good about the light, how much would you want for a 90 minutes feature film 1 week shoot?
