  • Shorinji Kempo is the Japanese way to say the name. The Kanji also read Siu Lum Gar Chuan Fa and Shaolin Ssu Chuan Fa, it means Shaolin Temple Fist Way. It is not Shorin Kempo, Ed Parker Kempo or any other Kempo. No it's not karate in a Kung Fu Frame. So Doshin learned martial arts from childhood & travelled China learning from many masters. When he rturned to Japan after WW2 he used his knowledge to create a complete martial art/religion. Want to see top shorinji search kawashima or arai.

  • This is not a great demo of shorinji kempo, but so what? Go into almost any martial art class and most of the students will be average, sometimes a couple of exceptional ones. Doesn't matter if it's muay thai, bjj whatever. Shorinji Kempo is for self defense and has been tested in the real world countless times. I trained with an 8th dan a few years ago, he'd had over 60 street fights and never lost one. Serious life and death fights against guys armed with knives etc. So many ignorant comments!

  • hey i am in there :)

  • The "music" in the video was unnecesary.

  • this is pretty awsome but it doesnt show them in an actual match.

Cause 3:00 does not happen .

a decent fighter does not flip over/ throw over by someone standing up-right

i would like to see this is a competition match

  • And this is what u get when china and japan come together :D

  • 2:17 !!!

  • I'm a Black Belt in Shotokan, and our school just recently transfered to Shorin Kempo. Taught to us by Kyoshi Pitassi, who was one of Hanshi Bryans(Terry Bryan ripleys believe it or not arrow catcher, Check my friends list on fb name is Jordan Fluffee Staub) lower ranked students, and he was taught By Hanshi Smith. Our School name is 3Tigers Martial Arts. Check us out online, we have a swansea location, belvelle, colorado, ofallon, and texas. Please check us out.:) thumbs up so ppl can see plz=)

  • hokutoryu jujutsu is even better of this

  • :x

  • Ugly music at the beginning

  • @pikachyu1 Oh. Thanks for the info. I didn't know.

  • are all the throws pure power or is the taker selling a little bit too?

  • this sucks ,MMA is for kings

  • @djGhizmo

Chuck Liddell has a Kempo tattoo on his shoulder :)

  • thnks for this demo i know what form of martial arts i want to study ovr summer break

  • whats the song's titlee?!

  • This just looks like a really cheap rip off of southern style kung fu.

  • Interesting. This demo reel reminds me of Hapkido. Bet it's easy to cross train in both of these styles!

  • the white belt fights were cooler than the black belt fights...

  • The thing i notice with this video is something that all real martial artists like myself have trouble with. These kids blocking and reaction counters are at amazing speeds. However, their hits lack the hollow truth. If u understand what i am saying coment plz :)

  • @JACharbs Is hollow truth where an attack that looks like a feint is actually a real attack? If that's what you mean, then I learned something like that. My sensei told me that if I slow my attack down midway through, then the opponent would think that it was a feint and lower their guard, but even if you're midway through an attack you can snap it out with speed and turn it into an actual attack. That is my understanding of hollow truth. Is it correct?

  • @sorry it took so long man i havnt been on in a while. And to a degree yes, the hollow truth could be described as that but it also has many other definitions. I see the hollow truth as simple being ones KI (killing Intent) and will to fight in a battle. These move lack it, so if these kids were going up against a true warrior, spetnaz or some crazy shit like that then they'd get their asses kicked. Am i saying i could do better? no not at all. i dont even have my black belt yet

  • @JACharbs Although I admire the humbleness of your comment, the expression "I don't even have my black belt yet" makes me cringe.

  • @JACharbs I've only got a brown 1st bar in jujitsu, and a begginner belt in tora bushido. If hollow truth in your opinion is KI, then having a lack of that can also be an advantage. If you lack KI then your opponent may underestimate you, and try to finish the fight quickly or in one blow. If this happens, a quick counter-throw or bone breaking move can give you enough time to gtfo. In most of my fights outside of the dojo, I noticed that against some opponents you use KI, and some you don't.

  • @noneedtoask321 how do you have a belt in bushido? not starting an argument, but bushido isnt a martial art?

  • woah....at like 2:14 did that guy do a flipping break fall out of a wrist lock but did a cart wheel and landed it? .....epic

  • Does this actually work?

  • @EstebanSantana94 It depends on weather you can apply what you've learned in a real attack situation. Really it doesn't matter what style of MA you do, be it karate; jujitsu; taekwondo; etc, when it comes down to using moves that work to save yourself in a fight, they're all very similar.

Shorinji Kempo is a hybrid martial art, so i'd imagine that it is very good for self defence.

    hope that helped :)

  • 0:40 that one handed rai would have gotten me 20 press ups in my dojo

  • oh MAN, those white-belts are better than the green-belts in my club!

  • @haxpaxed Theay are white because it's the old way of belts, there were only black and white.

  • WOW, definitely cool, this martial art comes from japan?

  • @faqmi1 It originated in China and made it's way to Japan.

  • lots of show and well trained choreography in that vid...

    looks still amazing

but ill stay with karate ;)

  • @multikultiraider there isn't really much need for choreography. the blackbelts at my club managed to string together at least a dozen techniques and demonstrate it (to the untrained eye) flawlessly with 5 minutes notice.

  • @ajgrovery

nice, but i didnt say its choreography because they perform so many techniques without thinking of it, rather than it looks like choreography ;)

  • @ajgrovery ok, it wasn'y clear what you meant

  • I miss training in Kempo, it was, by far, the most fun I've ever had training.

The training was hard but amazing. Seeing these guys move the way they do brings back many memories.. At one time I could move like them but not now... Got old and fat! The basis is still there though!

  • i think shorinji kempo would be practical in a real fight if you masterd it, just like any other martial art tho, if you master it and the movements become second nature and fluent you could seriously fuck sombodys day up lol, oh and one thing in this vid i see alot of when the ppl are sparring is there turning there backs against the opp. idc if its just sparring but turning your back is a bad habit to get into ecspeacially when a real fight breaks out

  • @hiphoplivs bruce lee said i fear the man who practice one kick athousand times agaist a man who practice a thousand kick a few times

  • @hiphoplivs i see these kinds of martial arts mainly as traditional styles, which they are. if you wanted something for self defense purposes then these are not the kind of styles you should be looking at first.

  • @Ozznize shorinji kempo and Bruce lee's jeet kune do are specifically designed to take all of the non-essentials away such as wing chung etc. these arts forms do work.. especially as Shorinji Kempo is an accumulation of most arts forms put together (mostly shaolin temple kung fu as shorinji kempo in japanese means the way of the shaolin temple fist).

  • i think shorinji kempo would be practical in a real fight if you masterd it, just like any other martial art tho, if you master it and the movements become second nature and fluent you could seriously fuck sombodys day up lol

  • 2:09 AMAZING!!

  • even my grandma would look cool with this soundtrack. these "demonstrations" are useless. only a real fight is a well done demonstration.

  • @doddoso

    xDDD

actually there is no need of any "demonstration".

every teacher teaches in a different way than another one, and so do the students fight in a whole different way although they had the same teacher.

  • @multikultiraider ok, then I AM GOD. No need to demonstrate it...

  • beautiful martial art..... very2 nice... i'd loved it....

  • and you know that Shorinji Kempo means Shaolin Kung-Fu?

  • @dbercike5 Shorin (little mountain in Japanese) is so-named as an homage to Shaolin. Whether or not there is a direct lineage from Shaolin to Shorin is frequently disputed. I think it is more of a sign of admiration or respect for Shaolin; an acknowledgement, if you will. Kempo is a Japanese translation of the term Ch'uan Fa, though you'll notice they have different chinese characters. I'm sure this is well-known but Kung Fu doesn't have to mean martial arts (though it also comes from Ch'uan Fa)

  • @thadreazie it's not little mountain, it's little forest.

  • Why there's no fighter in the world that running 1000 miles like three kingdoms's horse red hare so he will unstoppable(just like smallville.Ha...ha....ha.ROFL)

  • Chemical Brothers, AND Shorinji Kempo!? BEST VIDEO EVER!

  • 3rd Degree Shorinji Kempo here. Excellent video.

  • Comment removed

  • Shorinji Kempo was 'invented' by a man who was basically a 'NAZI' and proud of it. Imperial Japanese agent being given the right to inherit the lost art by a Chinese abbott(because Doshin got much love for dem inferior Chinese Mongrols)...Steven Spielberg needs to get a whiff of this. Blockbuster!! lol

Shorinji Kempo = Wado + some Hakko Ryu

So Doshin is a nationalistic fraud.

  • Im Proud to be a member of Shorinji Kempo :D !

  • As far as these techniques go on the video, they are a waste of time and would never work on a resisting opponent. I have seen better demons from Hapkido masters. These techniques are so bad, I swear, I have seen 10 year old green belts in karate look better.

  • @BushidoCode72 i don't believe a green belt can be granted to a 10 years old

  • now i'm seeing the kotegaish-like techniques...i guess

  • i don't see the aikijujutsu

  • I don't understand the statement that Shorin ji kempo is a "combination of karate etc. etc. built on a kung-fu framework. All karate comes from kung-fu. From what I've seen of all the different kempo styles is that they are no more kung-fu than any other traditional style of karate.I guess my question is why is the "kung fu" heritage emphasized so much in any style with term kempo in it?

  • @Worlddrifter Dude, these people don't know what the hell they are talking about. This on the video, whatever it is, is a MESS. These guys can't fight. I have seen green belts in tae kwon do and karate look better. No coordination. No power. No technique. No timing, No concept of distancing. Just nothing at all. A bunch of wimps trying to fool themselves they are warriors.

  • @Worlddrifter the Kung Fu connection is emphasized in various Kenpo styles expecialy because of the Japanese language itself. In Japanese, the word Kenpo, along with refering to native styles, also refers to any Chinese Martial Art, kind of like the phrase Kung Fu in America. So any Japanese style of Kenpo claims Chinese roots by proxy.

  • Is very much like Hapkido. But you know Japanese and Chinese arts... always some serious body-studying.

  • very nice...it kinda reminds me of Hapkido...

  • good embu guys and gals

  • nice!!

  • bellissimo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is silly.

  • Wow! Very impressive demo. I've study American kenpo and have seen other styles of kenpo: Tracy, Chinese, Dragon, etc. But this is my first view or Shorinji kempo.

  • very nice demonstration.

  • Full frame video would have been better.

  • Slick! Shorinji kempo impresses the hell out of me I have to say

  • actually, there is even better one called Guns.

  • People on these traditional threads (especially kempo) would always give you negative points for your remarks about MMA. But what they're doing is 95% unrealistic combat.

  • @BushidoCode72 i think that mma is fucking stupid idea in any chase, those mma guys arent not best fighters in the earth (examble.think about chinice shaolinmunks). Mma "heroes" has lot of urea in they heads, they arent nothing but a dogshit. U aint seen nothing yet :)

  • @toomdavin I always have people talk about these Shoalin Monks. Wake up. They don't exist. The people you see traveling around the world are a Chinese WuShu team members. They're NOT fighters. Where were these mystical monks when Japan smashed China? And if a SHaolin Monk would enter the UFC, he would LOSE BIG TIME. They are a myth and a long running scam.

  • @BushidoCode72 a monk who dedicated their entire life to kung fu cant dodge japanese bullets stupid, you need to be the matrix for that. they don't exist? youre weird man somebody says something to you that (may) prove you wrong and you just deny it, thats too easy dont you think

  • @toomdavin OK, well have a shoalin master enter a No Holds Barred Vale Tudo event in Brazil or Draka event in Russia, or MMA/UFC in US. And have him just waste these guys. It will never happen because they don't exist. So far MMA is the ONLY competition that's as close to real fighting as it gets. It's NOT street fighting. It's a sport but as realistic as it comes.

  • that was really good thankss x

  • shorinji kempo is nice but the aikijujitsu techniques are applied badly even in the best of dojos.

I think someone would be better off spending time in judo, karate and yoshinkan aikido.

  • I take shorinji kempo, great job :)

  • more like daito-ryu aiki-jitsu

  • great style, its look like sport jiu jitsu, but its shows too the kung fu moves ( i see more like jeet kune do...), really great!

  • Nice demonstrations.

  • Shorinji Kempo is a system of self improvement and self defense which also includes Budhist philosophy. It was bought back to Japan from China by Doshin So. He learnt from the real shaolin masters and developed Shorinji Kempo as a learning system based on the techniques he learnt in China. Over 1.5 million members worldwide in 33 countries.

Some of the movements in the video are pair-form, this is a sequence of preset combination techniques. Also you see some free form sparring (Randori).

  • 日本人なんかより全然うまいじゃん

  • lol retsu from street fighter one!!!

  • this looks freaking awesome :P

  • well... efficient or not, one thing is certain: shorinji kempo is cool, and i have to admit it.

  • @caimefoss It is efficient it focuses on the body's weak points and speed so that you don't need to be extremely muscular.

  • Read in a martial arts' book called From Lee to Li that in Japan Shorinji Kempo is a registered religion.

  • is headbutting allowed

  • Yes, in shorinji kempo we use everything you can use in a fight, if a headbutt is the best way to stop the violence, then do it!

  • I dont beleive this to be true. Shorinji Kempo contains techniques to defend against a headbut (and so in training ones partner may be required to attempt a headbut, so it can be defended against), but one of the aims is to learn to control agression and violence through knowledge of body mechanics and physics - using joint locks and pins and targeting nerve points. Raw power, agression and violence are not encouraged at all and really go against the philosophy of Shorinji.

  • 1:47 Aikido, Kote Gaeshi technique

  • In shorinji kempo is gyaku gote..

  • So what are the basic focuses of this martial art?

Like.. Actually defending your self for more practical uses or just sort of fighting in general?

  • It is more of a defense / spiritual martial art. A lot of the names for the techniques actually come from religion. As with all things, Kempo is "modernizing" and trying to seperate themselves from the religious aspects which I disagree with. if you go to the WSKO site, you can find out more information and locations of dojos in your area.

  • Lose the CRAP music!

  • I really enjoyed this video. Kempo is a great style with deep Chinese roots. Good stuff.

  • the hit in 1:48 it brokes ur hand into 2 pieces, i train shorinji kempo, im only a beginner, but my sensei showed to me while trainning with another black belt, its extremely painfull, believe me^^ shorinji rules

  • Is shorinji kempo a style of karate???

  • i just wished they mixed juho (soft techniques like joint locks and throws) into the live sparring .. that's the real strength of shorinji is the combination of hard and soft techniques

  • Is kenpo better than Muay Thai?

  • Really no art is better then the other it is up for your self to decide.

  • I'm confused about kenpo, kempo styles. First of all, is kenpo a style of karate???? Which is the real kenpo? What is the purpose of kenpo? Does it work? Is it combat proven? Is it real or fake?

  • Kenpo/kempo is a very real martial art I only know of a traditional Japanese style, I'm sure theres others and it works very well. How ever if your looking for more of a pure defensive art then aikido would be your best bet. You have to be prepared to work your way up and train though.

  • Is it karate though?

  • Yeah modern Kenpo is, its Called Kenpo Karate it was once known as the Ed Parker system. Though Kenpo its self roughly means Martial Arts.

  • oops sorry mate, meant "first law" for what kenpo means..

  • Comment removed

  • Shorinji Kempo is not Karate. In fact, Shorinji Kempo is the direct translation of Shaolin Kempo in Japanese. It originated in China and was brought to Japan and "modernized"

  • Karate means is empty hand. Also its kenpo. not Kempo, Kempo is a wrong translation that a lot of people get confused with. Yes I know it originated in China, that wasn't the point of my comments.

  • I hate to tell you this but I am 2nd generation Japanese and fluent in both languages and happen to be a 3rd degree Black belt in Shorinji Kempo on top of that. It is actually correct to have a "M" there. You are right in the translation of Karate. The rest is not true.

  • Well I guess it could go either way, from what I've know I've heard it said both ways and multiple people have said it basically is the same thing. My friend always told me kenpo was proper do to the way it translates from the original Chinese characters.

  • Comment removed

  • @yamals1 it's my understanding that Kempo doesn't use the same belt system, to facilitate the idea that we must always keep the perspective of a beginner. Is that not true?

  • @turqoizehexagonsun There are 8 belts to black, and 8 levels of black. Having a black belt in Shorinji Kempo only means you have a decent understanding of the basics. It is true that keeping the perspective of a beginner is important. After all, you can't fill a cup when it's already full. That, and it keeps you humble. With this art, there is so much to learn and I feel I have only scratched the surface of what there is to know. I still have a long way to go. Keeps things interesting. :)

  • @yamals1 And it can be pronounced "Kenpo" It's how you translate the Kanji.

  • @wartzs not really... it the same... it's also ken, its just that the n kana is usually pronounced as kind of an m before p and b kana. some romanisation systems like to represent this by writing an m instead

    e.g. kenpo as kempo

    ganbaru as gambaru

    shinbun as shimbun

  • @yamals1 You mean the "M" in "Kempo"? If so, I'd concur - (Shorinji) Kenpo translates from (Shao Lin Si) Quan Fa, so obviously the first syllable in would be "Ken" - "fist", yes?

  • I believe karate actually means 'open hand' not empty hand. Also, despite this name, some types of 'weapons' are used in wado-ryu karate.

  • Karate means empty hand. (Kara = empty, te = hand)

  • Comment removed

  • better in what?

  • For me Kempo is realy nice style, but there is to big difrence betwin randori an trening... Those technics from show and those from randori are quite difrent . The best style is krav maga trening and reality for them is the same!!!

  • The goal of the training is to enable you to use actual techniques in randori, without thought. That means that you are able to defend yourself properly when attacked.

That's why you need both randori and technique training.

  • a few good fighters knew jiujitsu which has nothing to do with the art. mas oyama was undefeated so by hater logic karate and bjj are equal in power. and dont use the lame "bjj is unbeaten"spam because every style it beat also beat it

  • Thosse sparrings are unbeliveable.

  • No, they are techniques.

  • Comment removed

  • are you sure kempo practitioners arent really confused ninjas? cause this looks like ninja action!

  • cute, looks like good fun

bit of theatre to add to the experience

  • What is 正義道流[Seigido-ryu]?

I've been doing shorinji kempo for 4years but

    never heard about Shorinji Kempo-Seigidouryu.

And I have seen the website of the seigdouryu but I cant understand it so will some one explain about seigidoryu?

  • Comment removed

  • You can see, you can tell that there's a big difference between when they demonstrate how you fight (beginning of the video) to when they actually start to spar (end of the video).

They seem to loose all that precision and power in their kicks and punches, and their flow is all ruined when they actually start to spar.. You can tell that they are still very insecure in what they do.

  • You are correct, it is their perception of what is defined as real, which does this. That Tai Chi does engage in how to harmonize the root with another person's root, while an attempt to learn real fighting is to engage in fighting. I enjoy practicing Tai Chi, when the need to fight does come, a group of liars proclaim that which is used to be Tai Chi.

  • yeah.. its also odd how they wear full contact gear, but the ref is calling it like a non-contact point sparring match.

  • I have never seen this art in actual practice in a fight, but it sure looks like its got potential. Short straight inside punches and low kicks. Anybody got any vids where its been used?

  • I'm a beginner in Shorinji Kempo, and I just love watching some real experts. Thank you so much for posting!

    Gasho.

  • liked the rangori part

  • bery good

  • I have been practicin this beautyful art for 11 years now... It is by far a masterful martial art where you never get to learn it all... you learn something new every single day, both physically and philosophically (spelling?)

Being a Black Belt there are still times where I get my ass kicked, but the sense of comunion with other Kempo artists from around the globe is very special

Cheers form Argentina great vid by the way

  • Yes this is beautiful martial art, looks similar to kung-fu or karate. But i think that savate or thai boxing are much tougher martial arts what do you think?

  • I think that if you're looking for something tough, definetly you shouldn't do any martial art.

Marial Arts are for spiritual grow, not for kick ass the guy next door.

On the other hand, it will be nice that you start a martial art like this, you'll change your mind about "tougher" arts like Muay Thai for example

  • Impressive

  • Rosvosektori, your comments suggest to me that you have completely missed the essence of Shorinji Kempo.

All kenshi carry the responsibility of representing the art in a manner befitting of its underlying philosophy, which is that of compassion, collaboration and achieving our full potential, whilst maintaining the peace and contributing positively to society.

This is at least as important as the ability to kick ass out of someone.

I just wish to respectfully point this out.

    Gasho.

  • Apologies, I intended to add the ability to kick ass out of somebody in speech marks.

The bottom line is that Shorinji Kempo is for contributing positively to society and self-defence, NOT kicking ass!

    Gassho.

  • there's too much ignorant people that thinks that Shorinji Kempo praticer's main target is learn to kic asses... (sorry for my bad english)

  • As a fight, is a great dance. Beautiful.

  • bellissino video...

  • già, fantastico...

  • Essas lutas são são Dulian ou Sanshou??

  • thank you

  • que tiene de interesante esto? seria bueno para practicarlo?

  • I love how everythiing in the begining is so awesome looking, and almost looks real. but then at the end they put the sparring gear on and it totally looses it's flash and thunder and looks like every other fight in the world. Chaotic, and unorganized. I do however want to give credit to the throws. Those are awesome.

  • yea i know what u mean about the chaotic fighting, unfortunately in real fights no matter what style u use its never like it is in the movies

  • Rehearsed fights are great for aerobics! Everyone should watch Royler beat the hell outta the Kempo guy in the Jiu-Jitsu vs Kempo related video on the right though.

  • That's not SHORINJI kempo in this gracie video.

Everyone keeps saying "kempo"as if it was one martial art. Drives me nuts!

  • I'll admit kempo is a great martial art. I've sparred against a buddy that does kempo. Even in these practiced dummy demos their form is horrible. Even the masters forms are horrible. Not extending the kicks, or turning the hips. Also in the sparring the black belts were just throwing random punches trying to score points. Not to mention they couldn't keep their guard up at all.

  • WOW awsome good moves and good video !!!

  • Just how are the two forms of kempo different.

  • In actuality they aren't. Both "Ken Po" styles are inspired by but are not decended from the original source of such inspiration. "Shorin Ji" means Shaolin Temple in Japanese, and infact does not share any of the same fist styles or martial practices of the Shaolin lineage at all. Same for "american kempo" Its simply a mish mash of this and that martial arts thrown together and made to look and sound as if it was from asian country. Look up USSD. see for yourself
