  • great voice I also am quite fond of the dkm version

  • very strong performance

  • astonishing performance... amazing facial expression...

  • ol tom had such an original and powerfull way to sing and perform

  • Since i heard it, i have it in my head all time....

  • I felt paralyzed at 4:30

  • He isn't signing it, he is living it...

  • wow I really only knew that song from Dropkick Murphys and I really love it.. but even though I am mostly a fan of rock music I have to honestly admit that he sang this song was sang really great.

  • wait i never knew amish were allowed to play instruments lol

  • this is how this song was meant to be recited ... (anti- war )

  • @doUcare4music Given your music preferences I think you would also enjoy Tom Waits ... check him out on YouTube and also check out 'waitswatcher' and 'vamosbabe' who do a lot of Tom's music on YouTube ... their own very compelling interpretations.

  • @dnworks It's a pleasure to run into another fan of the 'Ol Tomcat.

    Cheers!

  • @dnworks Fact: Tom Waits is amazing.

  • beautiful!

  • mellody sounds similar to Johnny Cash's "Ghosts Riders in the Sky"

  • Je suis Français et il m'a fallu user de la traduction en ligne pour tout comprendre... Je suis Français, mais je suis avant tout Celte.

    Cette chanson transperce mon coeur.

  • what means haroo /haru ? btw xD

  • @TVD1able It's like an Irish version of "hurray" which is an exclimation of joy.

  • my song

  • I heard and seen in this mans song 40 years of of my nightmares

  • Can someone send this song to George W. Bush so he can suffer in conscience as so many people he sent into the hell of Iraq have suffered with lost limbs.

  • @Zeppolino100 Can someone send this song to Insane Obama so he can suffer in consience as so many people he sent ( 10,000 troops and 30,000 private sector, read that mercenary=paid killers)into hell of Iraq have with lost limbs=grow up kid he's a paid whore!

  • @Zeppolino100 Thank you so much for this comment. The worst part of this is that I don't think George W. Bush cares about the people he sent into the hell of Iraq. Dubya actually said at the beginning of the Iraq war that he knew people would die and that he was sending their loved ones a hug in advance. What a callous thoughtless thing to say. He really doesn't care.

  • This is fantastic - I don't know if this version is better or the one of Anita Carter. I like both.

  • Sounds like a medieval minstrel.

  • @MZophiel Benjamin Luxon was an opera singer who also sang folk songs. He also sang pop and Broadway. A most versatile singer with an exquisitely beautiful voice.

  • beatifull irish folk song and a great singer

  • If you cant be moved by the lyrics of this song then you should have a heart installed

  • 1:10 for the song

  • god i love this song one of many I grew up with

  • ironical never herded that one

  • This is so touching.

  • Aqui em Brasília existe uma banda chamada Tanaman Dùl, que faz festivais de música medieval, especialmente aos sábados em uma taverna chamada Mittelalter na 203 Norte. Essa música está no repertório da banda, são exelentes.

  • I want a banjo playing ninja too. It's just pure badass.

  • so heart rending.

  • Wow this guy really goes all in when singing, he's actually amazing , and I feel sorry for all those Americans who believe that the when Johnny comes marching home version is real and correct now I know what the song truly intend

  • Wow, this dude put his whole soul into the singing. Fantastic :)

  • the song is great with the light beating of the banjo, but as soon as he starts plying melody with it at 3:50, the song becomes magical !!!

  • Ummm, it's Irish. Not I Rish

  • more classical singers should sing folk! this was amazing

  • its funny, i had first listened to this song in stupid old american movies, like police academy and such and i always thought its an american military song... now i see the true story of it and after feeling shock and awe because of banjamin luxon's voice, i also feel bad for the americans who dont know the actual meaning of the song when they perform it in every single war they have, ever since their civil war. i guess then ignorance is bliss...

  • Ben Luxon was my P.E teacher long long ago when i was around 11 or 12 years old, I am a total rock guiter loving music fan but wow what a great singer, best wishes from an ex pupil.

  • Magnificent. How does a culture move from this to X-Factor etc. ??? : )

  • @anthonylennon1 Anthony, you ask: " How does a culture move from this to X-Factor etc. ???"

Simple, you base your value system on unfettered capitalism and rampant consumption ... that's how !

  • @dnworks Well, we don't, do we? Culture is more than the media hype offers us! ;-) "Bring up the banners from the days gone by.."

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • I saw this program in the 1980s - stumbled on it one night channel surfing. Cried then and have never forgotten it. THANK YOU for posting this.

  • The fact that so many people feel touched by his voice proves to me we share so much more than we know. When he began to sing I felt an emotion I don't get from music anymore...

  • Benjamin Matthew Luxon CBE (born 24 March 1937 in Redruth, Cornwall, UK) is a retired British baritone.

Starting around 1990, Benjamin began to be troubled by hearing loss. Though he explored a variety of conventional and 'alternative' treatments, continued fluctuation and deterioration in his hearing forced him to end his singing career by the end of the decade.

  • Great 1:08!

  • I love the Irish, me being of Spanish descent, i have some Irish in me, but it brings me much happiness to find out the descent of my favorite war hymn is Irish. :D

  • This is so fucking beautiful....

Makes me shiver and gives me goosebumps all over xD.

    I love it <3

  • @Veggieman87 Ironical is a word, it means to use irony.

  • @Veggieman87 Ironical is a word, it means to use irony.

  • @Danielpsamson Huh. My bad. Wasn't in the dictionary I was using. Sorry about that.

  • @Veggieman87 Ironical is a word, it means to use irony.

  • I really like the Dropkick rendition... it's a different take. however. this made me tear up. this is how it's meant to be sung.

  • @MST3Killa t couldtn write better :)

  • this the first time i see this man, but he a very good singer

  • Take this, stupid dropkick murphys version!

  • @sacciuchi ? what an idiotic comment...

  • I would like to thank you greatly for putting this video on-line. I remember seeing this probably some 25 years ago by Luxor on PBS. He was crying and he had the crowd in tears. Well I cried too after hearing it. Of course I grew up with the American version of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". The Irish version of this song is so touching and really tells the tale of sadness and war.

  • Great singer and great song also the end.....

  • epic.

  • This was wonderful. I am deeply impressed.

  • Nice rendition of the song, and an excellent introduction. Thanks for linking it as a video response.
