@Q3ToPBuZz .....Wait! Before you give up on the Floyd, YouTube this: "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict"
@Celebrity729 They're not my ultimate favourite band, but I think they deserve that title. Their music is almost too good for this world. It's hard to believe that human life forms have made such music, especially Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. Whether you're a fan of rock or not (or even music in general), whether you like Beethoven or boyband bollocks, you absolutely HAVE to own a copy those two albums.
Syd's Birth/childhood (Shine On You Crazy Diamond part one)
Growing up (Welcome to the Machine)
Show business/adulthood (Have a Cigar)
After leaving the band (Wish You Were Here)
Life goes on without Syd (Shine On You Crazy Diamond part two)
The exact meanings of the songs don't matter though, people make their own great interpretations from the music. That's why it's such a beautiful thing.
I got really into pink floyd when I was a little kid and my older sister (she would have been 20, I was like 10) showed me Ecco The Dolphin and played a pink floyd record and stated the similarities :)
Absolutely one of my most fav songs by them....machine...and back when pink floyd was beginning alot of people critizied their music ...the noises they add..the pyschological music...they thought it wouldnt seem right....sounds fuckin awsome to me...love these guys till the day i die \m/
@jailenemjfan I know right! (No offense to those ppl out there who listen to today's music) Today's music is shit. First off, you can't understand what they're saying, the choreography blows, and I just don't get it!
But music like Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin, it at least makes some sort of sense.
This song captures the disappointment of our world. You didn't like school, like everyone else. You thought you were nobody's fool, just like everyone else. What did you dream life would be like? We have removed your ability to dream, so have a dream imposed on you. Welcome to the machine of production and consumption. You are a tiny, insignificant nothing in The Great Machine. But you depend on it, even while you hate it. You are the machine, even as much as you and I would like to destroy it.
I'm sorry but I don't think the machine has anything to do with the mainstream. I think it has to do with growing up into an adult and seeing the world for yourself and participating in the seemingly non-intimacy of life. The machine is uncaring as a whole, the machine merely exists, but it is what everything must become. You can resent this fact, no one is stopping you or encouraging you to, just follow where it takes you, and someday maybe it will be more organic.
are you fucking stupid @nintenkid91 ? of course they did acid and shrooms and the smoked bud dude you are a fucking retard how do you think they made all this psychodelic music? by doing psychodelic drugs dumbass
@luissteger It's about the music industry. The entire song tells the story of a young man who spends his young life fighting for his belief in his own individuality so he drops out of school and runs away from home. His dream is to become a professional musician only to find the music industry is as rigid and controlling as his previous life. "The Machine" is an allegory to the music industry because once you are in it, you are forced to do whatever the record label tells you.
@Blitzberg86 The metaphor of The Machine can be viewed as a reflection of society. We are all subordinate to the machine, yet we create the machine. We are all controlled, whether we like it or not. Told what to do, what to wear, how to act, what to DREAM...We've been programmed to live a mechanical life; Work, Eat, Sleep, Work, Eat, Sleep... I hope one day we will destroy this facade we have created and leap forward as Mankind. One Love.

@SeraphimSword They just are so Original, They were making Songs over 40 years ago. Just they are that good! I have no clue what it is. They just are. Its nice to lissen when your stoned. Its good calm music, Its good to sleep to and just live like a normal human being.
@SeraphimSword In today's world were people take for granted sampling and digitized sounds, remind yourselves that this is from 1975. As for your question, if you really are interested in why Pink Floyd are an original band simply go read their entry in Wikipedia. It will explain it all in detail.
@SeraphimSword: Whenever you hear a song that you say "sounds like Pink Floyd"... you tend to realize what make them special and innovative... and they've been doing this since the mid-60's.
Truth, I think. "Artists" today are more concerned with looking like a badass and mass market appeal than saying anything meaningful. And it's not because they have nothing to say, it's because they're scared of people seeing them for who, or what, they really are.
@sabor312 They hardly did drugs. Especially after what they saw happened to Syd from all of his drug use. People think they did all these drugs when they hardly did any. Except Syd, he was fucking crazy haha.

I think it supposed to simulate a voting booth, example would be every vote that is cast adds to the war machine simple enough, they government is responsible, and so is the populace, they just sit by as wars rage on doing noting about it. Honestly I don't know how I typed this out because I am super stoned. And the end, which I'm listening to right now, just further supports me. The leaders of all these countries laughing at the weaker people. Grab some weed sit back and enjot this great song.
@AllTheBouncingBalls Actually, it's much more likely that this song is about the music industry of the time. The 'machine' represents the record companies, they're attempting to control the musicians.
@HippieDude1414 I personally have interpreted it to be a metaphor for the time in your life when you're getting out of high school, having to go off and work at some mind numbing factory of office job. Clock in, clock out, day after day, the same thing Each day, wishing more than the previous that you would've tried to make something of a career for your life.

I think the song is about the machine in all its forms. Not just the bombs they make, but who they are. The New World Order globalists. The bankers, politicians, the mainstream media, the video games, the 9-to-5 work hour, the taxes, the wars, the degradation of our culture and art. Everything. And it's all planned.
