UGH HOW DO YOU DO THIS!!! This blows my mind, your coordination and just everything is fucking next level. I've been trying to do this for weeks and i can't even begin to do it.
@misery2951 - HAHAHAHAHAHA, no skills, yeah right. You are completely clueless. Post a response so we can all see your tremendous playing and let the community judge.
HEY MARSHALL , I have a proposition you. Study both hands of Agustin Barrios Mangore, Paraguayan composer of classical guitar (considered the best of all time). Its a good study, en Mi mayor (E mayor)
@Imparts6893 It was early 2002 and I was the ranch in west Texas. I had the Holdsworth Guitar and there isn't much else to do at the ranch besides play guitar, hunt, drink in the beautiful scenery and wildlife. So I was done with the morning hunt and I sat down to play without plugging in because the Carvin AH is hollow and is fairly loud without an amp. The linear triads with huge position shifts from Vai's Eugene's Trick Bag have always been fun so I was experimenting with those and voila
Dude, your control over your instrument is like nothing I have ever seen before. Do you teach at all? That is some crazy sounding stuff, very pecussive also. Very impressive.
Ok, ive been trying to emulate your technique for quite a while.. Will you please answer a few questions? It would mean so much to me.. What kind of picks do you use? Is the base of your picking hand actually resting on the strings? I can't pick up near the neck pickup like you do without resting my hand in front of the bridge and on the strings.. (which causes unwanted string muting on the low strings). Any advice would be much appreciated.. thanks
hey marshall in the start of the video when it looks like your doing four note per string lick on b before going to e are you doing the d d u u on the b then same on the e.....cuz when i do just the d on b then d u on e and u on b played im haveing a hard time doing the four note licks on one string
he kinda resembles on the way i pick the guitar.. if i am not mistaken its not alternate picking totally.. its a mixed of 2-3 string sweep, hammer, pull and alternate. rather than doin alternate picking on every string change he sweeps it like either 2 string downstroke or 2 string upstroke with combination of hammer ons
May be selling my Ibanez USA Sabre (100% original) to purchase a new amp. It's a 1988 probably the best you've ever seen. I'll be posting pics this weekend with Ebay link.
yep...only its a seymour duncan sm-3n. I called their custom shop way back in '92 and asked what the heck that small chrome pickup was in the neck of PG's ibz in intense Rock. That's what they told me it was.....sm3n.
There are some moments in which you emulate the sound of an infuriated wasp hitting a windowpane repeatedly - but for the 4 note per string licks its up, down, up, down (cross to the e string with one stroke) up, down up (cross back to the b with one stroke again) as far as I can see while utilising that Greg Howe-esque finger barring.
(I could be wrong, I haven't played in years after picking up an injury)
it's just down-down-up-up, but I'm using some unorthodox shapes in the right hand. The highlight here (if there is one) is the coordination between the hands. Perfect synchronization while dynamically palm-muting is quite challenging (for me)
i guess cause most of the time you always play with your wrist floating rather then having it sit on the bridge or what ever, the only time i see your wrist resting is when muting the lower strings. Im the same way and it feels a little awkward when palm muting on the same set of strings being picked.
what amazes me in this video and pretty much every other video of yours is your control.
@09kitty23 What? Lane's picking was strictly alternate. Some hybrid also, but this is on another level. Not to say that it's better, It's just something different.
It's a type of economy picking, but has a particular movement:
quite challenging for you? nothing challenges the legend himself marshall harrison!! i have see too many videos of you to know your one of the best, brett garsed even said himself that your a killer player.
your technique is nothing like i have ever seen it's perfect you are honestly like no one else i have ever seen, the most controlled player i have ever seen.
and your economy picking is mind blowing!!
is there any good books you would recommend for scale use and outside playing?

hey marshall what is swybrid picking?
iamsexy1212 11 months ago
@iamsexy1212
@Nickiefive
i believe it is a combination of hybrid picking and sweep picking, or at least that's what it sounds like to me.

Is there anything to look out for when one attempts to play those string skipping bits with this particular technique?
kingofkillings 1 year ago
what is this swybrid technique exactly?

Hey Marshall I have a question when did you come up with Swybrid picking?

Is that a P-90 in the neck position on that Ibanez like Paul Gilbert used to have in his pink Ibby back in the Racer X days? Pretty cool man.

It's a type of economy picking, but has a particular movement:
first chromatic lick is:
down-up-down-up(to start things up)
down-up-down-up
up-down-up-down
down-up-down-up
up-down-up-down
etc...
The rest is pretty much down-down-up-up
