Makes me want to take a relook at my old fishers I bought in 1979. Played them at a party at Oklahoma University across from the stadium where I lived and they carried across the campus! Also have an old Hitachi 300 watt receiver.
If I don't do something with them, do you know someone who would be interested in them? they are HUGE.
I have the Onkyo receiver at 1:40. I checked some forms but I still don't know it's a good amp or not. The speaker out in the backs a little tricky. The left channel goes out when you move the terminal. Is it worth replacing?
I got a pair of Mach Twos at 0:08 in 1991 for a graduation present. They were Radio Shack's best at the time and rated at 160 watts continuous with ferrofluid cooling for the tweeter and midrange. I would sometimes show people their power by turning the bass all the way up on the receiver while turning the midrange and treble all the way down. Put in a tape of Beck's "Loser" and the walls would rattle and when you put your hand by the blow holes you could feel the bursts of air shooting out!
@scrammy18 Thank god they don't make em like this anymore. Speakers from this era sucked. They were very bass heavy, had no mids, and very distorted highs. The front baffles were so wide that the speakers didn't image and if you drove the woofers too hard, they would bottom out like mad.
Look at that JBL that placed the mid and tweet on a horizontal plane, can you say lobing? Yuck!
@Audioholics Im assuming you heard a pair of large Advents and just jumped to conlusions. All of my vintage speakers image just fine, and have good midrange, and clear highs.
I was lucky enough2 find a pair of hpm 100 and the guy also had a extra pair of replacement hpm woofers he threw in when i bought them!I will never part with them, and its funny cause the hpm 40's is the ones i like more because of the small size and large output!!!!
Me and a friend each have a mint pair of the Pioneer HPM 100's - I bought mine new in the 80's & he got his used in mint cond. -- they are some extremely well built speakers, cast aluminum woofer frame, massive magnet, speakers are HEAVY-!- and still sound great. Theres a version of the HPM 100's with rubber woofer cone surrounds, these are to be avoided if possible, they dried out and are difficult to get repaired correctly. Ill never sell mine-- I hope.
gangtwanger, those are Infinity SM cabinets. they compete with house rockers like cerwin vegas. now if you want rally nice sounding vintage speakers, go with any of the large Infinity RS or Kappa cabinets. Make sure they have Emit tweeters in them.
Does anyone know what speakers are at 4:10? It's's a picture of 2 different-sized pairs - 3-way's and 4-ways with beautiful, dark, walnut veneers - my kind of speakers if they sound great.
@krypekeeper Im talking about best buy shit. Moron. How bout I kick your ass? The only reason I have vintage speakers is becuase I got them for free or cheap and I bet my system would kill your shitty little HTIB or Logitech sound system you got. lmao. Fuckin cunt.
@krypekeeper I see you have poor taste, or just bad ears. LOgitech? LOL. Polk tsi 200s? Big deal Polk aint what it used to be,but hey, for a guy makin minimum wage i guess you cant expect too much.
@krypekeeper I cant stand when people brag about their shitty audio systems lol! people say so much shit about logitechs plastic shit! I have boston acoustics towers with 12 inch woofers and radiator in each speaker and they sound amazing with my Yamaha reciever.
thats an awesome collection. Pioneer HPM 100s are amazing. i have a pair of them as well as Klipsh KG 4s which i love too, but the pioneers have more detail. Now if i could only get my hands on a high end Pioneer sx series receiver or a Sansui G series, i would be set.
Cool. Too bad that true Hifi is forgotten. after getting used to hearing tiny speakers then going back to hearing the sound quality of a top of the range 80's stereo system, makes the modern stuff sound mediocre in comparison, well admittedly some contemporary sound systems actually sound pretty good, the Ipod dock made by Bose is amazing, but small speakers can only do so much in sound quality and SPL, the only problem is not everyone has that much space.
I don't know, shatter the windows! Actually I guess I'd make those my front speakers and make my rears my HPM-100s (that is if I can ever find a pair of the Altecs at a decent price)!
I once heard tell of someone with 2 pairs of the "Voice of the Theatre" speakers to go with their 70s quad receiver. Imagine that! One day I wouldn't mind owning a pair but it would set me back $1500 at the very least., probably more in several years.
really... with that quad.. hmm well, prices of everything are going to keep rising, unless there is some breakthrough..but hey.. give it some time maybe it will turn around.
yeah i'm looking for not old speakers but speakers with 10" or bigger woofers and i cant find anything unless its a dj speaker but their like $300!yeah nowadays its these small things but i want the big speaker effect!
Pluses: HPM 100s are very dynamic, with an even response sounding snappy, detailed, and wide range from lows to highs. They also go very loud without distress.
Minuses: they don't sound-stage or image very well, and the bass can sometimes sound boomy and colored. They also have some assorted resonances that make them sound somewhat grainy and lacking in subtlety.
But you can't get a much better party, dance or home theatre speaker.
It was generally believed that the Japanese did not have a clue when it came to speaker design and sound. Even though they made very good electronics and good Tvs, they just did not have a clue about speakers,
Yes, but interestingly they hired Bart Locanthi of JBL fame to design the HPM series for Pioneer. As a result the HPMs sounded much better than the majority of Japan speakers. They sound quite a bit like the better JBL models.
But by far my favorite vintage Japanese box speakers are Yamaha NS 1000s with their beryllium coated drivers. Very advance and awesome to look at as well as listen to.
dude, no speaker is weird. That a coaxial PA speaker. Those are nice. Ever go to a concert, and hear the loud music? Well, most of the time these speakers are included. I bet u didnt know that.
Yeh, it isn't, and my dad is in a band and they use speakers just like those, they aren't in-wall, they are very powerfull, and I have seen plenty in lots of concerts...
The speakers that were shown from 5:14 - 5:33, I have seen them at a thrift store before. The guys were loading them off the truck, so I asked how much they wanted.. They said $10 and I could have them, because they really didn't want to have to mess with them any more than they had to. The only thing was, they were in really really poor shape. I also couldn't fit them in my jeep, so I didn't take them.
I also would like to say Nice collection you have. JBL for the win!
