  • Thoughts on the Focusrite Saffire??

  • i would rather have some lundgren m8's this sounds like a roland cubed 8 string.

  • Very nice defined dark sound =)

  • the tone doesn't do it for me at all... good playing though

  • 0:36 djesus be djentle!

  • what do you think of BKP Aftermaths?

  • i have a question, kind of random but what camera do you use?

  • how did you change the stock ibanez actives to the blackouts? did you have to change the pots or anything?

  • @masterd000 strictly 7 guitars make 9 strings

  • i had listened to this when i had a shitty internet connection, with a quality of 360p and thought it was dirty. now , with i better internet connection, i am viewing it at 1080 .. SO AWESOME !

  • tabs?

  • Great stuff as always from the YouTube metal guru himself. But the Randall ISOcab... It seemed a bit too 'plosive' and direct. Just saying, I thought it degredated from the pickup demonstration.

  • Everyone always says blackouts are more of a natural sound but I've tried them multiple times and I just cant get the beef and chug like I can with EMGs. Not trying to offend anyone; I'm just wonder how do people get good tones from them? I can't seem too.

  • @guitarman812 really?

I use both, EMGs and SD Blackouts and I like the Blackouts better. maybe it's your amp, because sometimes certain amps work better with certain guitars or pick ups

  • @guitarman812 all depends on the amp. like i cant get a good tone from EMG's and if i put them through a 6505+, they sound electronic and fake. but if i go through, say, a framus cobra then the EMG's sound great. however, i am yet to hear an amp that makes blackouts sound like shit

  • Hey Ola, does your signature guitar come in an 8 string version as well or just a 7 string version?

  • I have the same guitar, and same blackouts! its amazing!!

  • The Blackouts sound outstanding!!! I can't wait to have them installed in my RGA7 with the Elixir Strings.

  • hey Ola, you should try dimarzio pickups. I bet they would suit you awesomely

  • @badmonkey2082 just so you know ola has probably tried every metal pickup known to man already

  • Well, at least he did the RGA8 a favor and gave it some decent pups. XD

  • Blackouts - 81s shootout would be MOST appreciated!

  • by awful I would mean, not rich, not full, not punchy, no djent to it. It sounds like the gain is a little much and the mids are scooped too much IMHO. I usually always love his tones but this one sounds just like my pod xt.

Price does not always equal quality. just sayin...

I love 8 strings though! and play mine constantly through my Randall RM100 and Mark IV!

  • Old strings I hope!

  • thats some sexy mofo of a guitar

  • How anyone can not like this is beyond me. This is a great set of pups into what is possibly the best high-gain amp head ever made.

  • Comment removed

  • @SteeleInd Sounds like every demo of the pups quite frankly, and I'm surprised because there's a lot of 8 string pups that are very dull sounding. Play a Peavey Wolfgang through this in drop D and it will be completely different sounding through the amp I'm sure. This is a good representation for one mic Isocab mono sound with this equipment. Doesn't take much to imagine four tracks of this making a nice huge wall of sound and cut through all the drums and bass (which is tricky).

  • @Whyrendog

Right, but there are tones that are good for multi-tracking in mixes (like this one) and there are tones are good for showing off an amp. I feel they could have chosen a stronger, more impressive tone to use for an amp/pickup demo.

  • Don't judge blackout's by this video, try them for yourselves and you'll hear awesomeness.

  • Instead of just saying how "awful these things sound" how about a little backing up by, oh I donno, actually saying what about them makes you think they sound bad.

I'm not guitar maestro and I sure as hell aren't rich, but these sound great compared to the pickups in my guitars, especially clean.

  • 9 string coming soon i hope :-)

  • @2009korte The 8-string is perfect. I just love seeing symmetry in the head and the wide range (up to 5 octaves?)

Maybe it is just me, but I personally love all-in-one instruments. I personally play the keyboard and bass guitar. I hate having to bring 5 organs to a concert just for different sounds. I think it is impractical. Also, you feel more attached to that one particular instrument when you know you can do anything with it!

    But I don't see 9-strings coming anytime soon. ;)

  • @2009korte I hope NOT O_O

  • Sounds like harvester on low gear.

  • wow I thought it would sound better than 808s but.... hell no. this is awful. wtf Ola?

  • not djenty enough

  • 0:57 is this your own stuff? Sounds awesome.

  • @probassistNOT yes, you can see the full song yust watching the video "dar ftb100-metal (8strings)"

  • This is surprising, the blackouts on my 8 sound incredible.

  • Blackout's makes everything sound digital.

  • @GameKid98 you know why it is that way ...it's because they are not actually built by Seymour Duncan, but by Line 6, these pick ups are the first modelling pick ups, that's why they sound so digital, because they are not actual pick ups, but two modelling processors ...maybe Ola should choose another pick up simulation, maybe then they sound better...

  • @742617044427 Are you serious..!? xDD

Because my best friend and i have this inside joke that whenever something sounds digital, (And not tube-ish) we blame Line 6! And now you are blaming the excact same brand, Line 6.

Unbelievable. Line 6 is official the most digital sounding gain-producers in the world.

  • @GameKid98 only thing is that I own a Pod HD500 and I think it sounds really good, of course not as good as an Axe Fx, because you get what you pay, but I think you get a lot with the Pod HD

  • @742617044427 Wow, we share many opinions here. I think the Pod's are awesome! They don't cost as much as an Axe FX, yet, they sound very professional when you use them for direct recording. I've saving for a POD x3 for a long time. Line 6 also makes many great effect pedals, in my opinion. But their average combo-gain sound sucks pretty hard..

Also, I just checked your prof. for 2 secs, and dude, we even listen to the same music. The Human Abstract, Born of Osiris, Animals as Leaders, fuck yeah

  • @GameKid98 cool dude, so if you really like the modelling stuff of Line 6 you should check out the HD stuff, I think they have really progressed compared to the X3 series

...and yeah Animals As Leaders is the shit, I saw them live a week ago

  • @742617044427 That's fuckin sweet, dude.

I'm going to see Periphery in January and Vildhjarta this okstober.

  • @GameKid98 I've seen periphery in february and it was awesome and with Vildhjarta I'm just hoping that they release an album soon and I'm also hoping that they come to Austria so I can see them live

  • 8-strings sounds crappy =)

  • DIABLO

  • DAR against Fortin, ola.

    who whins the brutality war?

  • i need an rga8 :3

  • do you have any tips on how to make my Peavey XXX not sound like shit :(

  • I have been using blackouts for over a year now and I have never looked back, they sound grrreat!

  • i like the mix of opeth and diablo around 4:00 =D

  • Sik. I hope 'Neverlasting' is on the new album :)

  • oh my djent

  • your tone is weird in this video :S sounds like its sticky or something? idk, like too much or not enough gain, and a lot of fizz.... is it the amp or pickups? :S

  • @DemmelitionMan95 It's the guitar it's a low end ibanez piece of shit. The pickups are my favorite pickups, they're damn good.

  • @godlikecharacta 700$ is hardly low end, nothing too great but still a decent instrument.

  • @alt9001 In all theory that's probably really worth 400$ ibanez makes such shit guitars bro.

  • @godlikecharacta ... You make a fair point, I rest my case.

  • @godlikecharacta Ibanez make very excellent guitars for the money in terms of build and wood quality. The only thing that is crap about them is the stock pickups, and the locking trem on the very low end models. It's irrelevant really, because the tone of active pickups isn't altered by wood selection/quality like passives.

  • @Ethan314159 SD blackouts actually work very well alder/maple. With mahogany they sound muddy and too bassy. With EMG's mahogany gives them an tight low end and great midrange attack with solid note articulation. With alder and maple the SD blackouts sound amazing. They give the alder on my Jackson RR a very good heavy low end and they have excellent single note definition to make soloing sound amazing. I think SD Blackouts= Alder/Maple EMGs= Mahogany. This may differ for 8 string models tho...

  • @Stashitquick wow thats cool to hear(or read) "reviews" like this sort-of in depth. lol jus sayin' ;)

  • @Stashitquick I know on my 8 string ESP mahogany thru body my EMG 808's sound amazing no matter how much or little gain I through at them, I can't imagine anything improving on them. I have SD's, Bardens and Dimarzios on other guitars, I love them all, especially the alnico 5 SD's I have. but on this guitar the EMG's really shine, just to confirm what you said, I agree.

  • @weseyedwalk amen brother

  • @Ethan314159 Yea right, dude for 800$ i can get an ltd better put together, and an ebony fretboard. Also blackouts/emg's being free of wood affecting the tone is bullshit. I have emgs in my les paul and my dinky, guess which one sounds better? the thick heavy gibson. Both installed by the same guy who's been doing it for ages.

  • Comment removed

  • @godlikecharacta I never said that active pickups aren't affected by wood. I said it wasn't altered like passives, or not to the same degree. And if you think an LTD made in Indonesia is better put together than Ibanez you are mad. I've owned an LTD H-401FM, and it was a lovely guitar, but I'd never say it was well put together.

  • @Ethan314159 that's an ok guitar, Play an ec-1000 in vintage satin black (the one with the ebony fretboard) it's 800$ just like the guitar ola is playing and report back to me. It is an amazing instrument

  • @godlikecharacta I really like the look of those. I'd love to try the version with the SD JB/59 as well. They're really tough to find down here though.

  • Needs moar mids, and less wet fart downtuning. I love Ola's videos, but I seriously hate 8 string guitars.

  • @Ethan314159 what did 8 string guitars ever do to you?

  • Comment removed

  • omg good tone

  • i have these in my 7. for me theyre almost TOO balanced. its as if you have to either have to bass really low or too high to hear a difference. im not complaining though, they sound better than emgs.. to me at least..

  • if I'm not mistaken, this is your second pickup for your RGA8, right? CMIIW.

BTW, you said "no more Ibanez" lol.

But who gives a shit. Rock on, mothefucka!!!!!

  • I'd like to hear what Ola thinks of them..

  • Try EMG X Series man ;)

  • Sound's like shit, of course imho

  • Ola, the unique difference between the 8string Blackouts to the 6string Blackout is the the number of strings or the tone changes to?

  • Ola when's new Feared coming out???

  • hm... a little to nasally for my liking!

  • Great cleans for having such a powerful and gritty gain

  • Blegh. Awful sounding things!

  • @Prostheta if by awful you mean awesome.

  • @barret707 No, I am very sure that "awfu" is what I wrote and is also what I meant. Coincidence?

  • @barret707 No, I am very sure that "awful" is what I wrote and is also what I meant. Coincidence?

  • @Prostheta I dunno man but they sound pretty good to me.

  • @Prostheta whats so bad about them?

  • @TheMetalhead804 I just don't like them, but that doesn't mean other people can't of course. They're just too "one trick pony" for me. I prefer lower output AlNiCo-II or AlNiCo-V for the response that pickups with integral pre-amps can easily take away. Active/passive switching with a separate pre-amp is better for the best of both worlds. That said, I like the EMG 81/60 combination for what they do in my EXPs.

The videos I've seen on these Blackouts just don't sell them to me. Not convinced.

  • @Prostheta The DAR sounds great though :-D Wouldn't mind checking that out if I ever get chance.

  • @Prostheta well i suggest you actually try the blackouts in your guitar before judging. having 81/60 in an aexploror gives me the vibe your a metallica fanboy and everyone metallica fan without even hearing the blackouts says they suck. im not trying to offend you by saying that and of course i don't know if you even like metallica. but to each their own i guess.

  • @TheMetalhead804 Why would I want to try them? I'm not even in the market for new pickups and all of my guitars and basses (both bought and self-built) are configured how I like them. My 7-string has passives in, and I prefer how it sounds to actives.

If you don't want to come across as offensive, don't pre-judge people you know nothing about. Whatever next? Creating preconceptions about me based on my choice of truss rod type or fret dressing technique? I use Blue Steels if that helps you any.

  • @Prostheta like i said in my previous comment i don't know you and i wasn't actually judging you. blackouts sound more like a passive pickup rather than your average active (apparently i haven't tried them myself but these are things everyone has said about them) what pickups do you use in your 7 string?

  • @TheMetalhead804 Of course not. Apart from the whole "your [sic] a metallica fanboy" bit....

  • @Prostheta all i meant was that i was getting the idea that you where one i wasn't saying that you actually are one.

  • Can you demo a Line 6 DT50 please?

  • These pickups actually sound pretty damn amazing depending on what amp, what settings, and what style of music you play. I love Jeff Loomis's guitar work and these pickups are great for that style! Clarity, solid wall of sound, pinch harmonics jump off the fretboard, and sustain. Yes they are a bit harsh but it works for all the music i play.

  • Plastic sound, really don't like it.

Not even close to bareknuckles in quality.

  • I've been wondering what the Blackouts would sound like on an 8-string for some time now, and all I can say is...BEAST!!!

  • I think Blackouts workout better for 6 strings, on 8 string the low end and mellowship is bit too much

  • Blackouts much much better than EMG.

  • Blackouts>emgs

  • Think this is the first time I didn't like the tone on one of your videos..

  • @ambassadorofpain1 couldn't agree more..... the cleans were nice but the distortion tones were was too bright, maybe too much presence. they just sounded too shrill and biting

  • @ambassadorofpain1

    Same with me...

I think he should stick with the 7 string

  • Fucking brutal! :)

  • where drums and bass?

  • The stock pickups in my rga8 are so muddy that I rarely play it :(

    I need some aftermarkets bad!

  • not so keen on these pickups. they've a harsh trebly quality to them

  • Would be cool to hear this against an 8-string bareknuckle or Lundgren!

  • @fr618 8-string motherfucking Aftermaths!!!

  • @ILuvIbanezGuitars 8 string warpigs ;D And a ceramic bridge.thats the recipe for a nuclear meltdown

  • @getsuga987 Yes those would also be AMAZING! Pretty much anything from Bareknuckle :D

  • I have a bridge blackout in a basswood Ibanez... they sound without character. nice, middy and that's all. I don't play it anymore. I use a JB in a mahogany maple top body. much better. of course I would like an aftermath.

  • they have a lot of output...

  • sounds like one long fart

  • Hey man, you played the dimarzio 8s yet?

  • Kicking ass again!!!

  • I say scoop the mid more for this dark of a pick up. Just my thought

  • too much gain!

  • So fuzzy. It's sounds like straight static with a note value. This is why I hate the hysteria over active pickups.

  • YOU LUCKY SON OF A BITCH

  • Hey Ola,Can You Make A DiMarzio CrunchLab 7 Video?

  • I love your videos!

  • I don't like them. Not what I was expecting. :(

  • Ola i have question! Do you like scoop mids ? or more mids in your eq? What is your typical eq in mids?

  • that guitar sounds like a fucking beast!

  • There are a lot of mids in that pickup... arent there???

  • In my opinion , it sounds as typical marshall tone

  • Ok I may not own an 8 string but hot damn I just realized I am getting black outs for my ibanez 7 string.

    thank you Ola

  • Needs more djent.

  • It's a bit dirty a tone for me.

  • Nice. This is why I like real Seymour Duncan pickups for the big crunch sound. I might get 2 JB's in my Dean EVO Special guitar when money can allow it.

  • you like these over EMG 8 string set?

  • If anyone cornered the social media for amp testing....it's Ola!

  • Br00tal \m/

  • can you posts the songs you where playing?

    love the playing.

  • it sounds like a gritty sounding roland cube lol.

  • 4:20 Patterns in the Ivy fuck yeahhhhhh!!!!

  • awesome. Passives were Definitely way clearer though.

  • brutal !

  • Mids Should Be Around Between 10 and 11oclock, Bass Around 2 or 3 oclock, Treble at 5oclock and if you got a Presence Knob it would need to be at 3, thats my setting, and the gain knob around 12

  • Mids Should Be Around Between 10 and 11oclock, Bass Around 2 or 3 oclock, Treble at 5oclock and if you got a Presence Knob it would need to be at 3, thats my setting, and the gain knob around 12

  • Mids Should Be Around Between 10 and 11oclock, Bass Around 2 or 3 oclock, Treble at 5oclock and if you got a Presence Knob it would need to be at 3, thats my setting, and the gain knob around 12

  • Mid-ranged thrash sounding

  • Too much gain for my taste, but good clarity even with all that fuzzzz

  • Blackouts are the best metal pickups ever made PERIOD.

  • Not my cup of tea.

It sounds a bit.... muddy with a bit to much grain.

    The playing is awesome btw.

  • @xesior agree

  • @xesior

    agree!

  • @xesior

I have to agree with this.

  • @xesior

I have to agree with this.

  • it would be nice to do VS comparation. never the less it is always inspiring to see you playing

  • I get a boner whenever I see a new video from Ola in my sub box ;D

  • @nblax41 I dont have time me.. i instantly come and come again when i see the gear after XD

  • LOVE Blackouts.

  • Fuck yeah, first view.
