Only eligible for certain people. Where I live the public transport is fantastic, faster than private transport at certain times. Especially so when they finish off that busway past that passes near my house.
@Zappyguy111 Works in big cities, but it doesn't work in most of america where many folks are employed 45 minutes away from there place of residence by car. Public transportation in bigger cities and in Europe are an excellent solution because Western Europe as a whole is smaller than the United States, much more tightly packed. For the vast majority of Americans its simply impractical
Fun Fact...1/3 of the gas you put in your car goes strait out the exhaust, 1/3 goes to your heater and 1/3 actually allows your car to move. so also turn down your ac and heater.
@AKStayPuff Your A/C system must turn a compressor to work which cuts down on your fuel mileage but it does not take anywhere near 1/3 of the engines power to turn it. (Somewhere between 5-15% depending on the size of the motor) Using your heater will not have any noticable effect on your fuel mileage. The heat is a free biproduct of the motor and the only energy used is the blower motor fan which is barely noticable. (like less than 1% better mpg)
@AKStayPuff that was a completely uneducated statement. First of all, the heater has virtually no affect on the MPG of the car. It uses the heat of the engine (normally an excess by product) and a small fan with uses a very tiny amount of electricity. As for your comment about exhaust, almost no gas actually "goes out the exhaust". Instead, with a small restrictive exhaust system, it could put extra strain on the motor, causing it do work harder. Next time, look up your facts before commenting.
What about ethanol-free fuel? I've heard that fuel with ethanol can reduce your car's efficiency and it seems like when I use ethanol-free fuel, I get about 50 extra miles per tank, but I haven't done a double-blind study or anything...
@mergfkt Ethanol does reduce gas millage, but its alot cheaper than Gasoline so to keep the price down they put it in there. You may get fifty extra miles, but most likely will pay more for it, thus negating the reason for better gas millage.
We discovered on a long trip up the east coast that cruise control really eats gas if there's traffic on the interstate. Not using it, I got 37 mpg average on the tank. My husband, who loves cruise control, got 26 mpg average on the tank.
@bevscorner somehow that seems strange. The driving school always say to drive at a constant speed with a constant throttle. I really don't think i am better than a computer at that.
@timonix2 Come to think of it, I took the shift where there was very little traffic, so I was able to manually keep at a more constant cruise speed. In traffic, which describes most of I-95 from Virginia to Connecticut, the constant slowing and throttle up cruise control uses to get you back to cruise speed really eats gas.

Step 1 to save fuel on petrol : Sell your car
Step 2 : Buy a bicycle
Step 3 : Use public transport
*fine print*
This option is only eligible for certain people.

@Zappyguy111 It's also extremely inconvenient for just about everyone.

@bevscorner So true. It's even worse when you drive like my grandfather, who uses his cruise control function to get back up to speed!
