@Slexym Well, if Americans descended from the British, then why do the British still exist? I'm not sure if bats evovled from rats or if they simply share a common ancestor, but regardless of which of these possibilities is true, it needs to be said that the evolution of a species does not require all of it's members to participate. It's simple really; a subset of a given species branches off and through successive generations becomes an entirely new species.

@Slexym But it's important to remember that the original species does not automatically disappear simply because a small group of it's members have managed to speciate due to environmental pressures. If the original breed of rats is not subjected to any environmental pressure then there is no need for evolution to occur. Rats do not evolve into bats just because.
