As a Kempo and Aikido student.. In my Aikido dojo, I never told anyone I trained in Kempo but the Sensei could see it in my movements and wanted to test his top students. Well, they got a reality check and really embarrassed. Most got sprained fingers. They don't know how to hit as tori so in turn they don't know how to defend as uke. They were a bit arrogant too. train the way you fight and fight the way you train. Sometimes getting hit is a good lesson on being humble.
Training like ONLY this sets you up to get killed in the streets! In order for your art to be effective, you must test it against uki who doesn't just leave his arm (or leg) out there free for grabs, and who doesn't run across half the floor to telegraph his intention! Sure looks fun though!
The problem with these aikido vs karate videos is that they don't use anyone who is any good or of significant rank in karate. Of course if they did it properly, if the karate practitioner hit the aikido person, something would break.
even as a demonstration, this isn't brilliant. look at the first strike the "karate" guy throws.... it's completely unrealistic.
i'm all for demonstrative stuff but i'd appreciate a little honesty and realism on the part of the martial artists..... this is just plain unbelievable.
Good techniques... but not praticle unless you have praticed at full speeds and resistance just before the point of damaging the Uke. As stated tough these techniques are desinged to tear muscles and liguimedts along with break bone, so they would have to be a demo. But a "demo" doesn't equal fake.
why are all aikido vids "demos"???where can i find a vid of REAL TIME aikido sparring? none of this complience BS....not puting aikido down but its hard to get the simplest wrist lock on an opponent who is fighting back, let alone all those fancy throws and locks...KISS= keep it simple stupid...
@scottla78 None of this compliance BS? You miss the entire point. In Aikido, if the attacker does NOT comply with the technique, the outcome is broken bones, ripped tendons, or dislocated joints. Uke (Attacker) is TRAINED to comply for THIS reason. Also, most demos are to show HOW a certain tech works, not how to "kick someone's ass."
@Deke101 i understand that dude...what i meant was the attacks are not realistic, they all come nice and slow so you can get that perfect grip on a rist for example......never seen an aikido clip when the Uke is really trying to put that knife in....
@AznInvazn69Theory You should lean English yourself before calling others ignorant.
There is no definition of the word "demonstration" that includes something like (and is also not a combat or actual contest). In other words a demonstration can also be simultaneously a contest of some type. The fact remains that they used "vs." in the title so it is not at all unreasonable for people to complain about the title.
@noloferratus@noloferratus yes, it doesn't say that it is a demonstration, but it is. Aikidoka normally don't go around dojos or other places to challenge people just to prove their art. I'd know. We show people our art through demonstrations, normally. And this is such.
@Plunker. I totally I agree with you. Those who think that Aikido or japanese jujutsu is impractical and "should be only for old men" are ignorant and closed-minded. Just try to mug an aikidoka. Hardest thing in the world.
@AznInvazn69Theory I never implied that Aikido students or teachers should go around trying to prove their skills in contests. I'm simply stating that the complaints about the way this video was titled are valid. The title says "versus" and that still highly implies a contest is taking place. By the way I have in fact used Aikido in full speed weapons sparring with rattan clubs. Some of the technique worked fine for me and I didn't have some sort of objection to using it in a contest situation.
@AznInvazn69Theory The main reason I stopped taking Aikido is not because I felt it didn't work. I simply found a different group of people who showed me a style that I felt was more effective. For example the stick technique I learned in Aikido class did not cover attacks that use progressively changing angles. The types of attacks I'm writing about focus on strikes that create optical illusions which are not feints and yet can still lands with enough force to dent a 14 gauge steel helm.
@noloferratus Truthfully, I've done the same thing. I've taken Escrima alongside Aikido to further compensate the holes in aikido. Every martial art has holes, and I felt that the two styles bring wholeness if trained in both. I'm not saying that Escrima is more effective, or aikido is more effective. I'm saying that the holes in one art are covered by the other.
I really do tire of all of you so-called "experts..." "All the akido vids are staged?" -- You can't even spell the word.
"aikido is gym for old guys?" -- I'd really like to see you try to attack one of the "old farts" at the Hombu dojo in Japan. I'm sure you'd enjoy your stay in the hospital.
You should perhaps study the art before condemning it. As Abe Lincoln put it, better to remain silent and appear a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Fake. The kicks do look like karate but those hand strikes are clearly of the sort used when practising aikido. Also the style of breakfalls heavily resemble aikido - and I don't know about other schools but where I practised karate nobody wore a hakama
Aikido "cheats" for lack of a better term. Aikido can not be tested in a MMA type forum. I AM NOT solely stating Aikido is necessarily superior. Shoman Ate is a staple of Aikido and is a foul in: MMA, Boxing, Wrestling and everything else. Using a wrist or finger lock is also prohibited in competition.
i can definitely see how aikido can be merged with mma. theres a lot of aspects that can be used. however, aikido practitioners should practice in real time.
I agree, At least anyone serious about self defense training would need to. It would take some fairly serious engineering to make it happen ( in a safe manner )
@talkin79 I genuinely lol'ed when reading your comment, because it's so true! This is clearly a scripted encounter with a guy who doesn't even know Karate. It's an insult...
The demos are not competition, it's a show of what they train on a submissive dummy.
The only way to really find out how effective it is, is to use it in a real situation.
And any form of martial art that demands that puts anyone using it in danger.
If you can't use your style in even a competition verses other people who want to win then you don't know how effective it is verses some one who wants to harm you.
not sure about aikido, but i thought this vid was a demo comp. I know that in some martials arts, u can win "first prize" in demos to compensate for actually fighting.
man, do you even know what you're typing in caps for? this is the internet... you have to
1) expect people like me
2) expect fuck ups like you
3) stop carring
4) as always it comes down to the fighter and never the individual style seeing as any decent fighter has many styles to use and has a very easy time adapting new styles on the fly
moral of the stoty, you're a failure. I'd suggest a pistol personally, typically pretty quick
NO AIKIDO MASTER WHO HAVE WON FREE STYLE FULL CONTACT SPARING WITH ANY OTHER STYLES - To which I agree you are correct. However, try teaching karate or ANY other system to 60 yo and see how they do in a genuine street attack vs. a 60 yo that does Aikido. FULL CONTACT SPARRING IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! However it is not the ONLY consideration.
In real time situation aikido woud get theyr ass kicked. I know that! Everybody here dreams that it isnt like that! I coud bet my own life that boxer with 20 years exp coud kill akido with 20 years exp !
because when you are used as uke (the one that recieves the technique) you will feel the pain it can cause. if its done fast, and uke doesn't move well, his wrist, elbow and shoulder would been easily broken.
"Aikido versus Karate sparring" is a very misleading description. There is no sparring here and both are Aikido. "Two Aikido guys doing a demo" would be more fitting...
Just because you throw half-assed kicks and punches, it does not mean that you are doing Karate! They are both wearing Aikido gear, the "Karate" guy is doing all the correct Uke break falls you learn in Aikido and as this is a choreographed demo, these two probably train together in Aikido. Unless you think a Karate guy put on an Aikido uniform, learnt the Uke break falls and agreed to do a demo of Karate getting beaten by Aikido? I think my theory is more sound - two Aikido guys doing a demo.
Yet another fake-ass Aikido demo. There is only one clip of Aikido in real combat here (competitive) and none of that fancy shit was seen. Even though the Aikido only had one arm but still you expect to see....but like Bruce Lee said "it looks good but its 99% useless).
cross training is fine, but this demonstration is choreographed to favour the aikidoka, the aikidoka is responding before the attack. It's not really Aikido vs Karate is it? i can see it's a demo and that it has to choreographed for safety etc.
Why don't Aikido people really step up and challenge Karate, Kung Fu or whatever they want? All I've seen so far is Aikido demos mocking other martial arts and Aikidoka talking shit.
If I made a demonstration where I destroy somebody dressed up as an Aikidoka and call it "X vs Aikido" you people would be pretty pissed off, I presume. You'd say "that's not really Aikido!" and "real Aikido would kick your ass" and "stop mocking Aikido!".
But other martial artists don't mock Aikido. Only Aikidoka mock other arts and then refuse to fight for real to prove their statement. That's hypocrisy and cowardice.
Actually, "I" or "we" wouldnt become angry. If what I'm doing is correct and right, why would I care what anybody else thinks?
Like I've said, the style of Aikido I train in encourages cross training with all types, to try and find flaws in technique.
I don't think the intention of those in the demo was to berate anyone, but rather demonstrate what an Aikidoka would do in that situation. I don't think the title was meant to imply Karate as an inferior system.
I appreciate your respectful reply and approve of your training method. However I will say that your example is rare in the Aikido world, which I have dipped into on a few occasions.
Anyway, I have no issues with you personally. Thank you for the chat.
