@hughtub Hi, I know exactly what you mean. There's so much more potential than just using it in Silverlight for Deep Zoom on images.
One thing you need to realize is that Seadragon needs images to be internally structured differently than most images are, so you would need to convert all your images to its format which would mean that most image programs wouldn't understand how to open them properly. It would also mean much more of your hard drive being used for thumbnails, essentially.
@caiushawk If you go to bing maps slash explore, you'll be able to use a bunch of what he's showing here. Only the live video isn't available right now.
time to add our pics to the global map of the destructions of the eco systems along the high and by ways got to love it, got to love it. . . bringing home the world to me. . wait till they start loading up all the pics from the oceans . . ah, need three D all round . . and this is only the beginning
will you tell me where can shopping be done in private? isn't stepping outside your home means you're now in a public area? or do you want me to buy everything online, even grocery? not to mention issues related to online privacy.
the question of how many viewers? if i go down the street around 10 to 15 ppl watch me- those who are in the surrounding. this is something else- i can be seen from anywhere in the world by any number of persons. what's your argument against that. please.
You seem to be under the impression that you were previously protected from this, from surveillance.
In public - someone can follow you, take photos/video of you, take notes on everything you do, and pass this information onto an *unlimited* amount of other people anywhere in the world. All without your knowledge or permission.
You have never been protected from this.
The only time you have ever been protected, is in private settings.
of course you are correct on that. but unless i am on the list of some intelligence agency, this is a definite conclusion that this won't happen to me. however, here in this case, a random net-addict can lazily surf the site across the atlantic and spot me. now i don't want to be seen from anywhere like that! the job of the intelligence going in the hands of the general public is a breach of individual privacy. btw i am happy to find a sane debater on youtube. do reply to me.
let me put it like this: two wrongs dont make one right. even if i am to uneasily accept the power of the intelligence to keep an eye on me if they decide to do so, that in no way is a green flag wave to anyone seeing me from anywhere buying my grocery - in real time.
well.. in the post-modern information age, we're all celebrities. Now we all know how Britney Spears ect feels.
Take solace in the fact that all empowerment of citizens ends up leveleing the playing field and increasing the power of democracy in general. Now we can spy on members of the intelligence community just as they used to spy on us. Haha so fuck you James Bond.

I agree, innovation is never bad. It's not as though Microsoft bought out Google's mapping, it's improving. Now let Google step up to the plate again. :-)
At least for me it has nothing to do with hating on M$. Read my previous comment on this talk and you might get an idea of at least one reason why the ratings aren't head-over-heel.
The map technology in it self is clever enough, but some of the prospects concerning being broadcast unknowingly doesn't merit a full five.
They should 'just' use already known and public surveillance cams if any.
Read up on how FB/twitter/phone-GPS helps burglars, and then couple it with this!
It is sad that Microsoft's reputation has been destroyed by so many dick moves in past that cool innovation from the company is automatically labeled to be crap.
I have to admit that I too do that. MS logo on any service / product makes me instantly dislike it. I don't even feel like listening the demos or arguments for the product.
They really need to do something about their image.
@pjlehtim I think the fact that they try to dominate and push competition out of the way really help destroys their image. Take DirectX vs OpenGL for example. Then there is their sloppiness from programming--blue screen of death--to xbox. 40% failure rate with their 360's. A friend of mine is on his 6th 360, while he still has his first ps3, going on three years now.
Heh heh, yeah it's true though. Not of everybody of coarse. But I've heard of people keying a nice car they see in a parking lot simply because they figure the owner of said car probably doesn't deserve it, even though they've never met him.
My favorite generalization these days are hot chicks are all psychotic. Seems to be a rule of thumb though amazingly I have met some exceptions. heh
Interesting! Maybe it's by region, because I've only seen that hot girls are psychotic in modern TV shows and slasher flicks. Here in California, though, it's assumed that if you're pretty that you're materialistic, stupid, hedonistic, narcissistic, and selfish. Holds true a surprising amount of the time. Most exceptions I've met were out-of-state. But we also assume that all women, regardless of attractiveness, are crazy, but I suppose a more connotativly accurate way of saying it is illogical.
Yeah I tend to see your generalization of women to be common around here too, but I think region may have much to do with it too. I live in a fairly grungy city, with lots of low income to on the system folks here. Could explain it maybe? But yeah, when I meet a woman that is really hot, down to earth and startlingly intelligent I almost have to do a double take. They are so rare they should be national treasures, heh. And I guess in some cases they may very well be.
Am I the only one who is - contrary to most TED videos - absolutely NOT stunned after viewing this one? Most of it is so horribly old and has already been done, the video broadcasting is just a small step further and needed enough computing power. SO not impressed.
Am I the only one who has this thought frequently?:
Why are companies trying to make finding restaurants and shit easier when it's already infinitely simple to do? Enough already... there are thousands of tools to find hotels and tickets and flights and everything else... any big company who rebuilds these kinds of tools is rehashing old stuff just to get a piece of the action. It's transparent and frustrating, and I don't buy it.
Understandable, but one thing they're trying to do better is improve interface. My dad can still barely use google maps, and most of the ditzes back in high school were on par. Also, sort of out of place on this video. This is really more showing off the Photosynth integration.
pointless luxury, until its integrated into some kind of police state or civilian justice, which is kind of intriguing. why not use the world's overflowin supply of out-of-date cell phones and digital cameras to monitor alleyways streets and other areas of high prostitution, theft, drug-selling etc?
I don't see the point of this either. But I think it is great when technology leaders like Microsoft, Google etc... Spend time and money developing new technology and seeing just how far they can take certain ideas. A lot of revolutionary things come out of this process.
@celshader well it's easy to piggyback off another's ideas and add a feature. Remember the zune? the ipods that talked to each other technically brilliant but too feature rich and complicated. When you see that giant screen of Bing things he pulls up to do things on the map average person goes "too complicated" geeks go "neeeeat". Next gen google maps will have the same features only slimlined. Feature creep is a big problem of the modern user.
Since you've already got 5 thumbs down, I'll do you a favor and share the secret - you, sir, are the sheep. Very little of what this is copies Google Earth. Does Google Earth update the model of a location every time a new photo of the place in question is uploaded to Flickr? No. Does it show the sky? No. It integrated two new programs - Photosynth and Worldwide Telescope. Photosynth integration alone makes this revolutionary. And -inside- Pike Place? Hell no on Google Earth.
1) Augmentations to preexisting technologies are essential in the evolutions of those technologies. When plasma and LCD displays were introduced, the world didn't remark "WTF, they ripped off the TV!". When they made Redhat, no one scoffed. Microsoft is taking an existing idea and modifying it. And you clearly don't even see how! Really, google Photosynth. It's awesome.
2) Trolls don't make rational arguments, they make irrational statements.
Looked up Photosynth...they've really taken photo-stitching to a whole other freaky level. I'm curious if they'll ever get it to the point like in "Enemy of the State" lol
