@kj101st I hated Obama's decision to work so closely with Larry Summers, who advocated against regulating derivatives/credit default swaps to the bitter end. I am pleased that Volker has much more infuence these days. That said, Obama is not a king and does not rule by fiat; he has to deal with the hand he has been given. To get any bank reform passed he had to get 3 Republicans to sign on and they would not have signed on had Obama not moderated his position.

Some of the elements included the creation of a Consumer Proetection Agency [ to protect consumers against excesses in mortgage lending and credit card interest]. It requires that derivatives not be traded directly by banks. It requires if an institutions insolvency threatens the econonmy that regualators will have the power to seize it's assets and liquidate them so as to avoid future tax payer bail outs.......

He directed the the Education Dept to grant ALL student loans thus removing the middlemen notorious for charging as much interest as they could get. That Ghaddafi's most trusted advisor is defecting is a very good sign and there are reports of more to come. And as you say, the prevention of the slaughter of 10's of thousands of Muslims could significanlty influence Muslim moderates who have been on the fence about US intentions in the past.

The draw down of troops and material continues in Iraq, from a high of 170,000 troops towards a goal of 47,000 before the policy is reviewed again. Not the behavior of a war monger. @robm425 True, however congress's decision to pass H.J.Res. 114 was, in my opinion, greatly impacted by inaccurate and blatantly fraudulent reports of WMD's and financial/political interests of those who voted Aye. My point of the comment was to laugh at the fact that some people don't think the two incidents are greatly comparable and or even connected. The conservatives are trying to depopulate Obamas energy dept with massive perssonel cuts as they know these people are not friends of big oil. Bush and Cheney, both Oil Men, were a far different matter.

In February Obama proposed eliminating a 3.6 billion dollar program that gives coal, natural gas and oil companies tax breaks for production [Recently Exxon recordeed profits that were the largest in the history of western capitalism]. He then went on to say he wants the Dept of Energy to be given an additional 8 billion to research alternative sources of energy. And, as we well know, big oil and their brethen want no part of alternative energy as it might reduce their profits.

@kj101st I hated Obama's decision to work so closely with Larry Summers, who advocated against regulating derivatives/credit default swaps to the bitter end. I am pleased that Volker has much more infuence these days. That said, Obama is not a king and does not rule by fiat; he has to deal with the hand he has been given. To get any bank reform passed he had to get 3 Republicans to sign on and they would not have signed on had Obama not moderated his position.

Some of the elements included the creation of a Consumer Proetection Agency [ to protect consumers against excesses in mortgage lending and credit card interest]. It requires that derivatives not be traded directly by banks. It requires if an institutions insolvency threatens the econonmy that regualators will have the power to seize it's assets and liquidate them so as to avoid future tax payer bail outs.......

@kj101st Folded into the Health Care Legislation was a measure that would allow American students to waste less of their income, or their parents income, on repaying loans from privately held banks. He directed the the Education Dept to grant ALL student loans thus removing the middlemen notorious for charging as much interest as they could get. This is projected to save 60 billion to the taxpayer in the coming decade and is an obvious boon for those seeking higher education. GOP hates it.

That Ghaddafi's most trusted advisor is defecting is a very good sign and there are reports of more to come. And as you say, the prevention of the slaughter of 10's of thousands of Muslims could significanlty influence Muslim moderates who have been on the fence about US intentions in the past.

The draw down of troops and material continues in Iraq, from a high of 170,000 troops towards a goal of 47,000 before the policy is reviewed again. Not the behavior of a war monger. He increased the troop strength in Afghanistan to push back the Taliban [ who murder as easily as they breathe, toss acid in the faces of schoolgirls etc etc], who gained ground due to W's mismanagement. There is a plan for a draw down there this summer.

However, Libyas military is ranked 39th in the world, behind such giants as....Mexico [19], Sweden [21] Thailand [28] and Norway [35]. Nepal is ranked at #41. At the time of the Gulf War Iraq, with a significantly larger population, was ranked 4th in the world. Something tells me the US and the coalition forces, which have already vaporized most of Ghaddafis military, just might prevail.
