@nlpjohn You haven't disproved the run away greenhouse effect, you've simply proved it's reversible. I'd like to point out that multicellular life was non-existent 550 million years ago. Heat, CO2, and UV radiation allowed autotrophs to thrive, filling the atmosphere with oxygen. O2 levels rose from 3% to 21%, likely driving mass evolution. So yes, if we do burn the earth, some single celled autotrophs may be able to undo it, but we'll all be dead.

@nlpjohn 550 million year ago, there was no runaway greenhouse effect because of the law of conservation of matter. You need a source of greenhouse gasses, like CO2 trapped in ice, for a runaway effect. 550 million years ago, all available greenhouse gasses were in the atmosphere. It was single celled autotrophs that locked away atmospheric carbon. The runaway greenhouse effect would revert Earth to the way it was about 550 million years ago, and Earth was hot back then.

It takes more than heat for the runaway greenhouse gas effect - you need a source of greenhouse gases. 550 million years ago, there was no source, but there was a sink, so CO2 levels dropped. Now, we have more sources than sinks, so CO2 levels are rising. Life will survive global warming - we may not.

@nlpjohn 550 million years ago, what were the sources of CO2? There weren't too many volcanoes, and there was no trapped carbon. But there was photosynthetic life (bacteria) that consumed CO2, and released oxygen as waste. The reason the runaway greenhouse effect didn't occur 550mya is because it was a different scenario. You can't assume that what's true then is still true today. And positive feedback loops are common in nature. Example: glaciers increase albedo, making it even colder.
@nlpjohn Now, we have massive glaciers and permafrost. Glaciers contain large amounts of CO2, and permafrost contains large amounts of methane. When glaciers melt and permafrost thaws, these stored greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere. That's the runaway greenhouse gas effect we're looking at. 550mya, there were no glaciers or permafrost, therefore, no runaway greenhouse gas effect.

@kingangis999 Not only that, drought caused by warming kills plants that would use that extra CO2 as food, ice melting releases methane and plankton, which is important in the carbon cycle, is affected by ocean temperatures.
Cooling is the compensitory reaction to warming. All that has probably happened is we have miscalculated how much warming of the planet was neccessary to bring on the change or it is now time for the 700,000 year cycle to begin.

So the earth is cooling down in periods of higher solar activity, when it slows down and get weaker, the earth actually warms up again. this is an simple 11 years cycle which will peak in 2013 I believe, perhaps at the end of 2012, I'm not sure.

@mkl62 You can't make conclusions about global temperatures based on 1 years worth of falling temps in one place, any more then you can stand on a beach and watch 2 waves roll up on the beach and, depending where they stop, figure out if the tide is coming in or going out.

@kaderoder Sea levels? Even if sea levels were to rise because of CC, it would be on the order of inches, not feet and unless you have a carefully calibrated experiment off-shore, you won't notice it.
If your remarking to Gore's claim that "if 1/2 the polar Ice caps were to melt, sea level would rise 20ft". Technically he is right, but no climate scientist has said that this would happen in less then 100 years even if the bleakest predictions are true. There are "Al Gore's" on both sides....

@cristop5 It's well known that the sun goes through an 11 year cycle of higher and lower activity (El Nino and La Nina cycles are driven by it). There is also another, larger 400 year cycle.
1998 was the peak of the heating cycle, and was one of the highest cycles in recent history. I'm not advocating a position in the debate, but I am exposing false conclusions....
We're about to enter another 11 year cycle with the peak in about 2020. It will be interesting to see where things are then.
@alueshen In the most recent solar cycle total solar irradiance peaked in 2002-3, then declined, reaching its nadir in 2009-10. But did temperatures decline along with TSI? No. They plateauxed. Why didn't they decline?
Maybe it was because CO2 continued to increase over this period.

The northern hemisphere was subject to a combination of a 'La Nina' event which is when the oceans cycle bears its lowest temperatures, and a 'negative arctic oscillation' which is when the wind pattern in the arctic region reverses.
Normally winds trap the freezing cold air at the pole, but occasionally the winds change and blow outwards. This plunged northern the Europe and Americas into snow, whilst Australia took a 40 deg C heatwave. The average global temperature was still up!

Scientific papers have been explaining greenhouse gases for over 100 years, and since the 1970s scientific papers have overwhelmingly predicted warming due to industrialisation, and increased use of fossil fuels (hydro-carbons).

Heat, CO2, and UV radiation allowed autotrophs to thrive, filling the atmosphere with oxygen. O2 levels rose from 3% to 21%, likely driving mass evolution. So yes, if we do burn the earth, some single celled autotrophs may be able to undo it, but we'll all be dead.

You need a source of greenhouse gasses, like CO2 trapped in ice, for a runaway effect. 550 million years ago, all available greenhouse gasses were in the atmosphere. It was single celled autotrophs that locked away atmospheric carbon. The runaway greenhouse effect would revert Earth to the way it was about 550 million years ago, and Earth was hot back then.

Now, we have more sources than sinks, so CO2 levels are rising. Life will survive global warming - we may not.

@nlpjohn 550 million years ago, what were the sources of CO2? There weren't too many volcanoes, and there was no trapped carbon. But there was photosynthetic life (bacteria) that consumed CO2, and released oxygen as waste. The reason the runaway greenhouse effect didn't occur 550mya is because it was a different scenario. You can't assume that what's true then is still true today. And positive feedback loops are common in nature. Example: glaciers increase albedo, making it even colder.

When glaciers melt and permafrost thaws, these stored greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere. That's the runaway greenhouse gas effect we're looking at. 550mya, there were no glaciers or permafrost, therefore, no runaway greenhouse gas effect.

the more active the sun is, the more the oceans warm up, the more evaporation there is producing cloud cover. So the earth is cooling down in periods of higher solar activity, when it slows down and get weaker, the earth actually warms up again. this is an simple 11 years cycle which will peak in 2013 I believe, perhaps at the end of 2012, I'm not sure.

Actually, the petrol industry (that is, everyone able to tax fuels in various ways, not including Driller Dan or the gas station owner - but the people that controls it all) will make extra money from the "global warming" thing too.

Not only scientists face this threat all over the world, all the time; lawyers, politicians and whatever also have this Damocles' sword hanging over them.
Any wonder then that many will "take the easy route"?

First, no matter what you believe, remember that the media is the WORST place to get information in regards to science. Time after time the media takes no responsibility in it's reporting of what "science" says, either for or against the debate.
Case in point. Time reported the little ice age story in the 70's. 7 papers were written at that time supporting global cooling. During the same period, there were over 100 written supporting the opposite conclusion. Don't trust the media!!

@mkl62 You can't make conclusions about global temperatures based on 1 years worth of falling temps in one place, any more then you can stand on a beach and watch 2 waves roll up on the beach and, depending where they stop, figure out if the tide is coming in or going out.
The reality is that there is compelling data on both sides. Try to resist picking a "team" on this issue and see the media politicians, Durkin and Gore for what they are, attention whores.

@kaderoder Sea levels? Even if sea levels were to rise because of CC, it would be on the order of inches, not feet and unless you have a carefully calibrated experiment off-shore, you won't notice it.
If your remarking to Gore's claim that "if 1/2 the polar Ice caps were to melt, sea level would rise 20ft". Technically he is right, but no climate scientist has said that this would happen in less then 100 years even if the bleakest predictions are true. There are "Al Gore's" on both sides....

@cristop5 It's well known that the sun goes through an 11 year cycle of higher and lower activity (El Nino and La Nina cycles are driven by it). There is also another, larger 400 year cycle.
1998 was the peak of the heating cycle, and was one of the highest cycles in recent history. I'm not advocating a position in the debate, but I am exposing false conclusions....
We're about to enter another 11 year cycle with the peak in about 2020. It will be interesting to see where things are then.

@alueshen In the most recent solar cycle total solar irradiance peaked in 2002-3, then declined, reaching its nadir in 2009-10. But did temperatures decline along with TSI? No. They plateauxed. Why didn't they decline?
Maybe it was because CO2 continued to increase over this period.

Enough with this global warming nonsense. Did you know in the past the earth had much higher CO2 levels? Yeah there were a hell load more forest fires, mass extinction etc but we are humans, made in the image of God, this earth was made for US (us humans not U.S only). Winter of 2010, was the snowest winter ever as we know, it was also colder then normal winters as well.
BUT THEN...
Summer of 2010, Barely any rain, causing droughts all over the Country. Also one of the warmest summers.

The northern hemisphere was subject to a combination of a 'La Nina' event which is when the oceans cycle bears its lowest temperatures, and a 'negative arctic oscillation' which is when the wind pattern in the arctic region reverses.
Normally winds trap the freezing cold air at the pole, but occasionally the winds change and blow outwards. This plunged northern the Europe and Americas into snow, whilst Australia took a 40 deg C heatwave. The average global temperature was still up!

Therefore your analogy is a false equivocation.
Scientific papers have been explaining greenhouse gases for over 100 years, and since the 1970s scientific papers have overwhelmingly predicted warming due to industrialisation, and increased use of fossil fuels (hydro-carbons).

Like i have said numerous times, i dont listen to Al Gore, hes a politician he has nothing to do with climatology. I listen to the hundred thousand or so active climate researchers (too many to be paid off in some big conspiracy), of whom 97% accept climate change is currently man made.

global warming leads to massive cooling of the northern hemisphere and to dry hot weather on the equator and the southern hemisphere. this ain't new. most people dont understand that "hot" and "cold" are just two sides of the same coin. Humans have triggered the tipping point creating a runaway effect. Recent investigations have shown that even 2 million years ago, the CO2 level has never been more than 280ppm. One 3rd less than today. Sorokhtin didn't knew that.

Unless the person talking about "gobal warming" and green house gases mentions water vapour, clouds, as the most significant GHG, making up 95% of all GHGs, then they are bullshitters. There is nothing we can do about clouds so even if we can affect the other 5% of GHGs, most of which is natural anyways, we aren't getting anywhere.
There is no reason for us not to be cleaner and "greener", but there is no reason to lie to us to force action. Douche bags.
