yea mariahs version aint got shit... yo this is the fuckin jam. Rollin around bumpin this funky ass track i just wanna stop on the freeway and start a goddamn block party yo... EVERYBODY! GET FUNKY YALL!
haha on holiday st ives cornwall 1980, this and the gap band oops up side your head usedto rock in mr pegartys nightclub, yeah im sad , as my kids tell me,haha , at least they got tupac n biggie lol
does anyone now of the Jazzy newer instrumental version of this and who it is mixed by. it better version than the original and it gets the guys competeing on the dancefloor.
Its very hard for anyone outside of NY to know what this song meant to black or as we say now Urban culture in the 80's. It's very nostalgic for us. Thanks for posting this.
Cashandtimefreedom, I used to live on the corner of keeseville and hannibal in Saint Albans. The I used to always play dig dug in Tads fish house on Farmers blvd Growing up. I miss queens. It is a very unique place that is like no other.
mickman31187 I know EXACTLY what you mean. I grew up not too far away... St.Albans (190th- near Linden & Farmers). I miss the 80's big time- the music, movies, culture. Times were more simple and fun then. This song was jamming all the time on 98.7 Kiss and 107.5 WBLS back in the early 80's. Great song! Always like it, even as a young kid. Hotep (peace).
i have seen Tom Browne Live in 1981 in LA together with Crusaders and Patty Austin... 2 Shows after another ;-) Toni does a very good job there and looks fantastic. I like her better than chaka here, she is perfect for that song. Chaka does it differently, and the Mariah version is a shame.
This is real music--Better than these stupid --Bling Bling Rappers nowadays--who rap about girls, money & killing--They dont even know what real music is.
As everyone else, I thought it was Chaka also. But the girl did her thing. Does anybody know if she is still singing? Some say its Toni, some say its Tonni. Can anyone verify what her real name is? All and all it is a fantastic song and one of my favorites. I'm from Jamaica New York.
This song was a hit when initially released in The Netherlands in 1981 (highest top40 position: #3, stayed in for 10 weeks), but 11 years later it made it to the charts again (highest position: #38, stayed in 3 weeks). It was the same song, just a little longer I think.
Oh yeah, when we realized this wasn't Chaka we were pissed because she clearly mocked Chaka note for note, but she did her thing on this track so no hate. Great song!
Hey! Thats not Chaka Khan? I always thought Chaka sang the hook. They did'nt pull a C+C music factory singer-swap did they? (using a girl they thought was prettier instead of the real voice) or am i wrong about it being chaka? Whomever she is her facial xpreshun is perfect for this song, singer or not....
Not enough attention payed to the bass player! And they seem to be trivialising the role of the singer! I love this song, but a bit ashamed of it after all these years.
fantasticissimo! Questo è suonare e cantare!

Jazz musicians took alot of criticism for getting funky but as we can all see it was the right move.
