Agreed if we use fossil fuel for the heating in the conversion process, but if we use alternative energy in the heating there can be zero emission in the conversion process
The fact is mainly, coal, besides being cheap when externalities are not figured in, is a terrible fuel source. It releases huge amounts of greenhosue gases, as well as sulfur, which has destroyed about half the lakes in upstate new york north of where I live already and is on it's way to destroying the other half, as well as releasing huge amounts of particulate pollution. This, combined with mining hazards means that by most estimates coal causes more deaths than chernobyl did every year.
Wow what? They were ragging on 'Clean Coal' for the entire video, up until about 9:00 minutes... where they say that 'clean coal' is one of the options that should be used to decrease emissions.
Of course they industry wants subsidies, and of course it would prefer not to use emission standards... they are profit seeking private economic agents. Who doesn't want handouts?.. and of course they are against internalizing externalities such as emissions.
Hahaha Yes buy into the scare and hoax. Come on you WANT to believe your environment will change in your lifetime...too bad it won't its GREEN BALONEY!
1. the "unstable foreign government" that sells the us the most oil is...Canada (21% of us imports). 2.if we all drive hybrids and plug them in...to the grid still powered by....coal. 3. instead of whining and appeals to emotion, apply for some of that research funding and find a better way. If its profitable and green, industry will jump on it.
Even if you don't believe in climate change, coal-to-liquids technology would skyrocket the cost of fuel. Check the math. Coal is in three-digit demand around the world. The process is expensive, and the cost of carbon will almost double it. You like $4/gallon gas? How about $9 a gallon?
Thanks for the video. Very good. If Mcain becomes our president he will push for coal. Its like the fourth installment of Star wars the backwards saga continues.
One has to wonder how such a dishonest scam has caught on, though people like Margaret Meade were working on inventing a climate based concept to introduce reasons for taxation and methods of control of peoples back in the 1975, when most of us were still waiting for them to invent Astrological collision, over population, collapse in food production, tidal waves, an ice age ALL threatened in my lifetime & we have recently had Bird Flu that has made Rumsfeld a fortune from TamiFlu to name but one
This is a very good video. Among the scientific community global warming hasn't been a debatable issue for years. Don't let the corporate media and "Bush Science" confuse you. Do your research people.
There R so many mistatements.1-Coal process won't use up water resources as claimed-only uses an allocation of water-water is recycled. They will take care not 2 cause further damage 2 environement. Senator didn't understand the speaker 'cause he was undereducated/ignorant,not 'cause speaker lacked clear facts-speaker's dumb look-he can't believe this senator is SO STUPID!Why don't they show speaker's speech in it's entirety?Where r the comments from remaining senators who agreed with speaker.
fuck you my uncle and my grandfather were both coal miners and thats how they feed there famileys you ass and getting paid 15 dollars an hour is bad either
The windmills kill bird, so their no good either. Put hydro-electric in it kills fish, snails, rare plants. BTW Prius owners. Did you know that your batteries require silver and processing is extremely damaging to the environment?
Great video, NRDC! But I'm confused -- aren't you pushing carbon sequestration, which is HUGELY expensive, risky and unproven? Why go down that road, when it's so clearly a boondoggle? I don't get it.
These envionmental nuts have this boogey man under their beds (global warming) which will not allow them to think with the higher parts of their brains. Coal liquidification is "part" of the solutiuon for energy independence.
It is sad that the global warming deniers have to resort to insulting other people's intelligence. If you have facts well then fine. If you don't just walk away.
Wake up people......before it's too late. God has given us CLEAN energy........like the sun and wind and Nicola Tesla........and we continue to ignore His gifts, and ruin our world. So much for GREED!
HOW about investing in CLEAN energy. God gave us the sun, wind...........and Nicola Tesler. We have IGNORED all his gifts, and we continue doing a great job of ruining the world. INVEST in yourselves PEOPLE, before its too late!
Liquid coal... total bullshit! Carbon sequestration isn't even a good answer. If it were to ever leak back into the atmosphere (even a small leak over time) and we're screwed.
There is no truth to that what so ever. I am sorry but a small leak over time would have no effect on climate. The science behind climate change is no way settled in any way. CO2 is not a major climate driver, maybe in a modeled climate system dominated by positive feedbacks but not in anything empericly measured or proven.
Hmmmmm... are we to believe you, an anonymous internet poster, or the IPCC, AAAS and NAS. That's a real tough decision. I'm going to have to think about that one.

@manny48100
The problem is that there is no alternative for the time being note ethonol can not cater for the petrolium biproducts we also require from oil.
CTL & GTL & TTL is a stop gap, the world is going to need this technology to buy us time to find alternatives eg. electric cars, hydrogen etc.

Replace the coal power plants with nuclear power plants and divert the coal for gasoline.
