  • Après Moi is my favourite song... it's funny analyse other person singing your most memorable song... I must say that he has a great voice, but I miss so much the piano... Whatever, it's a good version... I like male voices perfoming Regina's songs.

  • Great artists copy. Genious steal. Hadnt lost your touch, Gabe. Imposibly ominous.

  • yeah, kinda weak huh.. but you got an A for effort pete

  • @csarito you're kidding right?

  • yeah, kinda weak huh.. but you got an A for effort pete

  • The vocals on this track are not as powerful, but his concert performances are perfect power. Intoxicating.

  • This is why I love covers. Sure it's not as raw and powerful as Regina Spektor's version, but there's a very pensive tone that I like.

  • SELING ENGLAND BY THE POUND,FOXTROT - BEGIN TO HOPE......what can i say????one of my favourite prog artist covers - I REPEAT - covers one of my favourite 00's pop artists...The universe should explode.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is really good. If he and Regina Spektor did a duet of this, it'd be brilliant.

  • meh

  • STUPENDA VERSIONE!

Resta comunque, pura magia.

  • I think I actually love this version more than the original. I can't say the same for all the versions in Scratch my Back, but I love this reinterpretation of a wonderful song.

The orchestration is just beautiful and I love Gabriel as a singer too.

  • it's awesome that he covered it! but he made it so unnaturally... complex... or something. still neat though : )

  • ..awesome..this is how it would sound if Regina had balls..;)

  • Maybe if his strong, sad orchestra combined with Regina Spektor's beautiful, poetic lyrics it would be glorious. Like a Russian ballet. Nothing really beats the original.

  • lol... that was strange. I think. I love the original and have heard it 100000 times and thats maybe why I think that.

  • It's so cool that Peter Gabriel covered a Regina Spektor song!!! We should just remember that.

  • Can't beat regina's original..... it's just trying too hard.

  • Whoa, what's wrong with you, guys? All this hate. It's a very good song (obviously), very well performed. I really like the mood the orchestra adds to it. And why should he sing the Russian part? It would probably sound strange, since he probably isn't really used to the pronunciation.

  • That is lovely!

  • Epic Fail

Peter Gabriel didn't cope the russian part of the lyric. Instead of it he just adds the two russian names in the end - Sasha, Natasha - just for no reason.

  • Regina Spektor's version is better

  • @SmotPoker09 - Obviously it's better. That's the original version. This is just a cover.

  • Much like his cover of the Magnetic Fields' "Book of Love," this just does nothing for me. He took all of the power out of it. I'll give him credit though, he seems to have good taste in other's music.

  • Peter Gabriel is my hero Every new album is much better and different than the last one He improves and improves he has no limits

  • Wow i love the music but the vocals fail.

  • Wow... Interesting. That is always quite a special something about a song when it can be sing both from the heart of male and female...

    Great cover.

  • I love this version so much, it's beautiful, the whole album is very good

  • so beautiful, I love this version very much - it's a masterpiece

    Guude

  • i admire his ambitions to cover this song, but i must say im not fond of this cover.

  • no russian part........wtf???....if not that i could say its a great cover. but. he just cutted off the centerplace.... :/

  • @qwerrie well, he cant speak russian, so why try? I guess he couldv gotten someone else to do that part... but its his cover.

  • @qwerrie exactly !

  • @qwerrie actually he left the word "горит" - "goreet" which means "burning" - so he caught the main word of the poem. But i can say it's really different versions of the same song - Regina's lyrical romance and Peter's tragic symphony.

p.s. I think that Peter's poor russian stopped him from using the whole russian part.

  • no russian part........wtf???....if not that i could say its a great cover. but. he just cutted off the centerplace.... :/

  • This Cover does exactly what a great cover should. Enlightens the glory of the original artist and beautiful song, witohut overshadowing it. Its like a brilliant tribute to her work, and Peter Gabriel is amazing in all of his own rights.

  • Too long, holy shit, did he sing the Russian part?

  • It's a master piece, no doubt about it. It is also dramatically different from the Spektor's version. The orchestration is tremendous and creates and delicious ambient with some tension.

However, I personally prefer the Spektor's version.

  • i could just be picky, but his lack of effort in trying to at least make "après moi le deluge" sound anything like its original language like regina does instead of a blatant english accent kind of ruins the mood. but the yelling part in this is just really powerful.

  • You just can't beat Regina Spektor at her own game.

But you can't beat Peter Gabriel at his either. :)

The Regina Spektor one is more insane, more strong emotion. This one is more subdued emotion and, frankly, more tragic-sounding.

They are both unbelievable beautiful, though.

  • i think that Regina Spektor & Peter Gabriel should d a duet to this song.

    that would be amazing.

    :)

  • i want the OH part so this verison fails

  • hauntingly beautiful in it's own way and i adore peter gabriel for making so many charming covers, but this is not the best version of this song. i'd love to hear just the instrumental track for this.

  • There's a video suggestion to your right where Regina plays the original at Lollapalooza. Click on it. THAT is the song. This is a raspy and dull version of it, and he's ruined the melody.

  • Gahh his vocals killed this song! They needed to be more emotional to send the listener into a dizzying spiral of majestic musicccccc >,<

  • no... just no. he sings it too softly. regina has such power that you cant hate her. plus at the start he doestnt say i OH ... see? it doesnt work at all

  • Beautiful cover of a beautiful song...

Though I love the Russian poem in Regina's original, I'm glad Gabriel left it out. His "yelling" really makes this song, it's so powerful.

  • My personal opinion is that Regina Spektor has a certain playfulness in her voice, something she can't ever not do, and, while it adds a certain element of insanity to this song in her version, Peter Gabriel's version emanates a feeling of tragedy and panic which much surpasses the original. Too bad he didn't also sing the russian part, those lyrics are absolutely heart-wrenching...

  • I digress with the comment before mine. Regina might be unbeatable at her own game, which is why you take the field in a different game. PG isn't trying to be Regina. He's trying to make the song different. That's what a cover should be.

And the bonus is that Regina will cover a PG song, which I quite look forward to.

  • @Skidonti In april was a short interwiev with Regina Spektor, it was said that she hasn't choose the song yet. But, in the same magazine was the mention Regina's favourite Gabriel's song is "Family Snapshot". So- maybe...:)

  • this just proves that it is impossible to successfully cover regina. she's unbeatable.

    try again, peter.

  • There will be another album "I'll scratch yours", and all the covered artist are going to sing Peter Gabriel songs... I wonder about Regina's choice. :)

  • I loved how he left the Revolution Poem in the song, but it was like in the background.

  • "And the conductor said, "Let there be light.'"

  • holy crap... i love peter gabriel and i love regina spektor. i'm so happy i found this!

  • most of you are dipshits. my apologies to anyone who loves this.

  • His Voice Is Great. Period.

  • @fnord5 Its not as good as the original, but that is always the way. Look at some of Peter's own work before you start to call him names like that.

  • @fnord5 Well, you are very much entitled to your opinion, but so is everyone else, and there is no reason to call someone a douchebag, so lets try to be civil.

  • this is a good cover and the strings soud wonderful,of course nothing willl ever beat the original regina spektor is amazing and so unique and the song really neads the russian poem febuary ink because without it i think the song loses a lot of its heart.........

  • This is ungodly AWESOME! I completely have chills. I adore Regina, and this is one of my favorite songs from her. And PG is just simply one of the greatest musical artists of all time! I'm so happy for Regina to honored in this way by one of the greats, and I also think it speaks so well of Peter as a person for shining a spotlight on her like this. Love the simplicity of RS's version, love the intense drama of this version! Genius!

  • Totes, SarahBee81. Totes.

The string arrangement is gorgeous - if perhaps a little bit too lush - but the caterwauling in the middle? Terrible.

  • I think he still has a beautiful tone to his voice, so I like the concept of this cover. However, the original is just such an beautiful song, and I feel like he just doesn't pull it off. He changed the phrasing around too much, and much of the rhythm is just lost.

PS - I technically know nothing about music, so while I theoretically mean what I am saying I'm pretty much making it up.

PPS - Regina is AMAZING live, and this song was even better, if that is actually possible, in concert.

  • i love Regina deeply, and in my opinion there is nothing that can beat the original!!

but this is not a bad cover, its well done.

also the Russian poem, "February Ink", she sings is the most incredible part of this song, AND HE DOESNT EVEN SAY IT!!!

  • Check out the Peter Gabriel podcast...he explains why he left out the Russian poem !

  • What an honor it would be to have one of your songs covered by one of the pioneers of music of this generation. Peter was introduced to Regina by his daughter. He said Regina will be one the musical industry will be hearing from in the future.

  • The russian is extreemly easy in this song. If you try to cover Opera 2 by vitas, that should give you a little trouble. The song is good but It would have been nice to hear your "attemt" on the russian.

  • I don't know the original...but I like this a lot.

  • check out the original, it's beautiful :)

  • he said in an interview he did try the russian but he couldn't pull it off even with a russian language coach, so he decided to leave it out and howl a bit instead. though he did try. ;)

  • This surprisingly less experimental then the idea of it sounded when I heard the premise.

His voice is really something unique....old and rasp without end up sounding like Roger Water's burnt out grunt.

  • I would've liked to hear him attempt the Russian verses.

  • great cover!

  • the orchestration is beautiful, but (maybe because i love the original so much) the vocals are... not weak, just not as powerful.

  • @lacksmyorganics It is a different style, it is comparing pears with pinneaples, both versions have their own merit, but I agree that Peter Gabriel making a cover of Regina is quite surprising.

  • @lacksmyorganics not weak?

  • I'm sure Regina Spektor is proud of him.

  • hehe, not sure she'd be 'proud' of him. She'd certainly be honoured. :D Apparently meeting Peter Gabriel can be pretty awe inspiring. Amazing, amazing person.

Does anyone know what she's covering by him on 'I'll Scratch Yours'?

  • I'm waiting for the concert in PARIS with passion....

  • wow!! that album's really amazing! gives me chill!

  • beautiful.

best song i've heard in 2010 so far ♥

  • i brividi...

  • absolut Meisterlich

  • WOW ...Another master piece

I love this song....I still don't understand how Peter Gabriel can make such beautiful music. He's the master ! ! !

  • @FanPeterGabriel because it's not Peter Gabriel's music. It's a cover from Regina Spektor

  • @mediaandme Peter Gabriel orchestrated and arranged it, so it is safe to say that it is his music, just not his original music. DFTBA.

  • @FanPeterGabriel this is not his song...

  • Comment removed

  • @HenuLaine no but this is his and john metcalfe's arrangement and fascinating arrangement!!!

  • What I like the most in the Regina's version is the "epic" feeling, achieved by the piano and the drums. Unfortunatelly it is missed in this one.

  • @BrazilianScopel I agree. I thought the orchestra was going to get overblown and dramatic... but it was a let-down. This song has emotional power that is lacking here.

  • Magija

    MOSTARAC

  • Una obra maestra

  • wonderful

  • Wow, what an intro! I love this song when Regina Spektor sings it. This is pretty good as well. Not as quirky as Regina but beautiful nonetheless.
