Ofcourse, the Kinks are great, they're at the top with the Beatles, Paul Simon ... . A lot of good songs they've made and the lyrics .. a very creative group.

Actually, I see the "Sleepwalker" album as the beginning of a phase in which Ray ceased composing "Rock Operas" in favor of simply writing great pop/rock songs again. The trend continued on "Misfits", "Low Budget", "Give The People What They Want", and "State of Confusion".

The lyrics are:

I'm a sleepwalker.

I'm a night stalker.

I'm a street walker.

I'm a night hawker.

The last line is why it sounds as though Ray sings "Night Talker" ... sound it out.

Dave is a good lead guitarist, maybe even great, but there are a hundred (or at least 50) better axe men at the top of the list.

And as fantastic as Ray is as a song writer, I had never considered him in the same league as Paul McCartney... but you just may be correct, misfit59.

Dave Davies, in my humble opinion, is one of the best lead guitarists of all time. And Ray? Well - his song writing speaks for itself. Only McCartney compares to Ray

@misfit59 IMHO Ray Davies, as a song writer, far outshines anything McCartney ever produced. Pete Townshend once remarked that he thought Ray Davies should someday be made Poet Laureate of Great Britain because his lyrics were so original and inventive, and yet so quintessentially British, and that is coming from one of the all-time great rock songwiters. I first heard the Kinks back in 1964, and they blew me away. Have been a fan ever since.

The release of this album ("Sleepwalker,") was a more than pleasant surprise in '77, proving more than ever that The Kinks were still alive and ready to rock your socks off, and this album still does it for me today.

Absolutley great find here. The KinKs still at the top of the heap even to this day and in to the solo careers of Ray and Dave.
