  • HIS THE BEST!

  • there's no such thing as 'THE BEST' on drumming. every person has their stuff. By the way, your english suck ass! lol

  • lol osti kyé a chier caliss stune vraie farce ste drummeur la hahahaha

  • LOl whats he wearing wrestler clothes?

  • What a fucking groove...

  • this kit is on ebay for 2k bucks atm. (shellset) with signed froontheads. pm me for link

  • bull FUCKING SHIT! both portnoy and peart compliment their band's music exceptionally...and by the way why are u bagging out mike when your name is dreamtheater87??? virgil donati is a good drummer, but i wouldn't be comparing drummers because there is no point every drummer is different

  • "both portnoy and peart compliment their band's music exceptionally" that's exactly what I was saying when I said they're great musical drummers. How did I diss MP in any way? DT are my favourite band and MP is my favourite drummer. But it is true that his drumming is not as advanced as Virgil's. MP himself has admitted this on several occasions saying that drummers like Donati and Colaiuta can "run circles around him".

  • I totally agree wth you. VIRGIL RULES is of the top 3 at least drumers in the world. Peart never got me exited, and this guy? He only plays striaght beats, stupid metal shit, but Virgil has mastered every good style, Jazz, Latin, Fusions, Funk, and then Metal.

  • You may need to look in to other material from Mike Portnoy. This performance really wasn't a true demonstration of his musical diversity.

  • virgil is great. But, Portnoy doesn't just play what you say he plays. If you listen to alot of dream theaters songs, you will see how complicated the grooves are in the songs.

  • Although I did not hear of him till my mid teens, I have to say that this guy is one of my heroes and I will always loves his playing. Keep the Dream alive Mike.

  • haha i ment niel who beceause i dont like him so much as mike hahaha, it was metafor.

  • thats a big ass fucking drum set

  • You think that's big? Check out Terry Bozzio's, he's got drums of pretty much every pitch for his crazy solos.

  • say wat you want dude but still five time drumfest best performer and im not sure but i think it was on a row so its speak from itself

  • well im not saying that hes the only great drummer in the world but in my optic hes the best

  • niel who????????

  • neal peart .... the drummer from canadian band RUSH

  • MP's amazing. He's revolutionised drumming so much over his career. And he's so consistant too.

    My favourite drummer.

  • Not only is he fucking amazing at drumming and actually uses all the stuff on his set, he likes Lamb of God (look at his shirt in the last scene). Lol.

  • Vayanse todos a la mierda ignorantes

  • i bet you he looks back at this video and is like "wtf was i wearing" lol

  • what about the fill after the gt solo in as i am?

  • mike portnoy kick ass all of them

  • 2 joey jordisson (slipknot)??????????

Ma ti fai qualche sostanza strana???

Tu metti quella chiavica di joey jordison prima di jason bitner di travis smith e di portnoy???

    AAHHHHHHHHHHHHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

DI BATTERIA NON CAPISCI UNA MAZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAa

  • ?????????????

  • ahahahaha hai ragione

  • mi sai dire qal'e' la canzone ... quella subito dopo il primo assolo.... grazie

  • La canzone che dici tu è "the dance of eternity"

E' la strumentale che si trova su "Scenes from a memory"

  • Per completezza in ordine le canzoni sono:

    "Take the time" (Images&Words)

Assolo di "Ytsejam" (When Dream and Day Unite)

"The Dance Of Eternity" (Scenes From A Memory)

"The New Millenium" (Falling Into Infinity)

    "In Constant Motion" (Systematic Chaos)

  • portnoy would kick most of their asses =P

they all have their good points n bad points

e.g. 2 joey jordisson is fast n fuckin amazing with a bouble bass drum or pedal however mike portnoy is 10 times more accurate... it doesnt take a lot to keep a rhythm goin constantly but portnoy doesnt stick to blindly breyin the shit out of a bass drum his feet are doin their own seperate rhythms with real effortlessness =P

  • Not to disagree with your valid Portnoy point, but Joey does keep out a damn good rhythm.

List to some of these newer stuff, he keeps a damn fast and persistent beat.

  • true lol after postin that comment ma bro put slipknots new album on lol what ya say is true =P ... but i still prefer portnoy =P

  • Neil actually says Mike is better.. Coming from a professional, I'm gonna listen to Neil and not you dumby.

  • No I was responding to a guy that said Joey Jordinson was the best.

Mike Portnoy's great, I would listen to him anyday.

  • He died, when? Just kidding, he never died you know that right?

  • Omg I know he's alive.

    arghh....

  • bporing my ass.

  • #1 Mike Portnoy

    #2 Joey Jordison

    #3 Julian Pava (ofcourse duh)

  • effing awesome! he's wearing a LoG shirt on Constant Motion c:

  • 1. Joey Jordison

    2. Mike Portnoy

    3. Alex van Halen

  • jeeez why do i see thomas lang in some lists but not dennis chambers or carter beauford

  • Check out Romain Goulon, hes incredible.

  • yeah.... but he`s boring....

  • He's anything but boring...AC/DC is boring for me...Romain's style is kinda unique. He makes melodies on the drums, not just percussion ideas. Just my opinion, but to me he is one of the very best. Kinda out of my league though, I actually play guitar, and know very little about the drums.

  • cadimumboy, the order should be this

    1. Albino Monster

    2. Purple Monster

    3. Awake/ACOS Kit

    4. Mirage Monster

    5. Siamese Monster

    6. Images and Words Kit

    7. Majesty Kit

  • drumbum561, the order is whatever I want it to be

p.s. the Majesty and the I&W kits are the same kit, just set up differently

  • up to 30 seconds is beastly

  • lol at 55 seconds - looks like he just got back from his wrestling meet.

  • favorite Portnoy kits (DT only) from best to worst:

    1. Purple/Red/Green Monster

    2. Siamese Monster

    3. Majesty/I&W kit

    4. Mapex kit

    5. Albino Monster

    6. a tree

    7. a trash can

    8. Mirage Monster

  • es la gloria eterna......

  • he's a gd drummer..but i tink tt there are more progressive drummers out there who jus dun receive the attention that DT gets.. Jazz forever!

  • there are jazz drummers more technical than him. and im more of a jazz guy myself. but portnoy is the best metal drummer

  • hahaha..man tt last statement's gonna evoke the ire of alota fans man..hahahah! but it's all cool..i mean i noe alota guys are gonna say tt portnoy's jus a single-stroked guy and most of his patterns are pretty linear all the way but i tink he's cool for jus being reali melodic in the technical aspect tt DT excels in..it's reali inspiring sumtimes to hear his genius at work cuz he makes tings reali fresh..i dun dig alota prog stuff, but he's cool for tt..and there are tons out there too!

  • He isn`t just a good drummer... he is one of the best drummers ever live! He makes drum-rythms that is just AMAZING! + he is one of the few drummers that realy use his whole kit, many many drummers just have a big drumkit just to have it... so shut up! LOL :P

  • true i think he olny missed hitting the floor there

  • ive literally tried to do the constant motion solo for months now

because my buddy can play the guitar solo perfectly

but i cant even begin to understand the way he moves his hands...

    bummer bro

  • i love at 51 seconds when you hear him go to his highs and back to the lows. MP is fucking awesome

  • in the last video i literally felt my jaw drop, if anybodys has seen their bio on the score dvd ud know him, john and john used to practise six hours a day, goes to show u if u practice you might end up as good as mike portnoy

  • is he wearing a lamb of god T-Shirt at the last video?

  • Yes he is:-) Go MP! Go Lamb of God!!

  • MP is my insiration. Best drummer ever in my book!

  • i really like portnoy because he is not the traditional metal drummer

  • great video of a great drummer!

  • Greatest inspiration for dumming in general.

  • look at the cymbals at 5:00...

  • there are lots of "best" drummers ... mike is one of them ... no one is the BEST

  • Incredible, the song at the end made my eyes water ;D

  • It's Constant Motion by Dream Theater

  • insane groove listen to LTE

  • What a great musican. Nuff said.

  • very good my friemd Joao.keep waking.

  • holy poop

  • its either holy crap or god poop make up your mind :)

  • amazing

  • If you really want to see the best of mike portnoy check out his sideproject,

    Liquid tension experiment

    =)

  • I would have to disagree on that.

    Not a chance.

    Cheers

  • I know that DT drumming is awesome, but liquid tension experiment and translantic is awesome aswell

  • I also disagree to that a lot of his best drumming is in dream theater.

  • panic drummer!

  • ganip ganash

  • That is friking tight skillz right there!!

  • Not the best, but one of them for sure.

  • one of the best drummers on this planet!! and dream theater is one of the best bands on this planet!!

  • and 2:22

  • Dance of Eternity - Dream Theater

  • song at :37????

  • I'd also like to know

  • this guy is incredible!!! the fuckin co-ordination and creative is just great!!!

  • Heh :) he played Panteras By Demons Be Driven at the start!

  • whats his shirt say?

  • Lamb of God

  • he could never be overated

    hes just too good

  • :O

i watch loads of awsome drum solos on youtube all the time, and harly any come close to this beast!

  • Try Billy Cobham.

  • fuck you.... this guy is insane!!!! very fucking nice!!! Mike fucking Portnoy

  • omg! cousin it plays drums!

  • these are only SOME of mike's best. Cheers!

  • I just want half of his power

  • Mike in Lamb of God's T-shirt :)

  • 3:29 - 3:47 where really cooooooooool breaks he did!!!

  • hes too good

  • What song starts at 2:37???

  • New Millennium from Falling Into Infinity.

    Cheers

  • Mike Portnoy is the greatest drummer EVER!

  • what song is the very last video from?

  • the song is called constant motion and its off the systematic chaos album

  • i like how hes ot the lamb of god shirt on

  • "pantera- by demons be driven" awesome moment there

  • this is Mike Portony!!

  • Where did you read "Mike Portnoy is the best drummer ever"?

  • Amen braw

  • wtf? o_O idiot.

  • so i like listening to dream theater....that means i don't like music? wtf....

  • While I'm not a big fan of Portnoy at all this is a nice retrospective of some of his work. Nicely done.

  • where is 6:00 and The Great Debate

  • awesome

  • really good, neil perts better

  • Neil Peart is the most amazing professional to ever sit behind a drum kit...

  • Neil Peart is good, but I wouldn't say he is better than Mike Portnoy.

  • I don't think the apprentice has surpassed his master. Eventhough Portnoy is the drummer who influenced me the most as a drummer and a listener, Peart is his biggest influence and you can tell by his style.

If you haven't seen yet, check out "R30" concert or "A Show of Hands" to see the highlights of Peart's career. I believe nobody has ever matched his insane body coordination.

    Cheers mate.

    Have fun.

  • It gets tiring having these "who is better" debates? Portnoy may be better technically but has nowhere the originality that Peart has developed. So what? It's what makes the world go round.

  • I think Mike has a better stage presence and plays much better and more intuitively live, while in the studio Neil is more creative.

  • how can you say that after watching this

  • the last one was tricky? right?

  • omg the dance of eternity bit is soooooo good (2.15)

  • Fuck that part of Constant Motion always gives me chills on my spine, even worse if I see how it is actually played o0

  • he is really fast, and he really know what drumming is!!!

  • Whats the song around 3:20?

  • New Millennium from Falling Into Infinity.

  • it is not "speed up" i´ve seen them live.. and faster :D

  • holy fuck Mike Portnoy with a lamb of god shirt, thats fucking sick, one of my favorite drummers with my favorite band's shirt.

  • Hehe , he also wore a Metalocolops shirt in the interview on the dvd special edition cd of Systomatic Chaos

  • awesome....

  • It's obvious you don't know DT. It's Constant Motion. These guys are 40 years old, they don't need to speed their performances up in a video... they always had that speed naturaly.

Maybe you wanna call "speeding up" to John Petrucci's "Rock Discipline", Jordan Rudess's "Keyboard Wizardry" or John Myung's "Progressive Bass Concepts".

If you listen to more DT stuff, those analysis mistakes of yours will disappear. =)

    Cheers mate

  • You obviously havent heard the song Constant Motion then

  • dude you;re an arse

    i've seen them live

and they play it better than your little head can understand

  • look the cymbals react...

...obviously it is not sped up.

  • his drums have got to be some of the best sounding i have evewr heard.

  • imagine owning this kit...

  • what Lamb of god shirt does he have at 4:29?

  • with all that rythm in hes body i bet he is an amazing dancer :S

  • that last segment at the end is awesome

  • 4:30 and on is absolutely astounding drumming!

  • would anyone be kind enough to tell me what the name of the last song on this video he played was?

  • Constant Motion from Systematic Chaos (their latest album)

  • thanks mAne! i appreciate it!

  • what song is 2:36 again?

    isn't it a LTE song?

  • New Millennium mid section from Falling into Infinity.

  • and are these vids, i mean the dance of eternity and the following new millenium, are they from any of his DVDs?

  • Yes. The both you mentioned are from Liquid Drum Theater.

  • Yes the DVD's called "Liquid Drum Theater"

  • New Millennium its a DT song off of Falling into Infinity

  • man...that dance of eternity...god damnit....i couldnt imagine even trying to come up with that...let alone playing it.

  • I love the double bass at 2:00

  • when it shows him playing constant motion it looks like they sped it up...BUT THEY DIDNT!

  • how do you know if they did or not?

  • because they didnt man

  • That´s not an argument :)

You know..I like Mike but it is easy to speed up a video...and it doesnt look naturally. The cymbals are swinging quite fast...I dont know.

  • well he hits the cymbals pretty fast and portnoy ussually has his cymbals on those stands pretty tight

  • I don`t know..in comparison with the cymbals motion in NewMillenium,in the last song they move faster..(I don`t think of the small cymbals-of course they return to their basic position very quickly.I mean the crash cymbals which he hits only few times but they returns back very soon too)And we know Mike sometimes plays faster things than are those in the last song but it looks more natural than the end of this video. But I can`t prove any of my ideas so I will end the discussion on this matter>)

  • cuz thats the speed the song is played, and dream theater doesnt speed stuff up like dragonforce or stuff like that...

  • By his own admission, he is not a rudiment drummer. But his patterns are killer.
