I'll never get the modern condemnation of gollywogs, sure they had the racist imagery, but the point was that they were to be loved and squeezed and held like any security-toy for kids. They're almost impressive in that sense, for such a retro-toy

I just bought my son a little gollywog yesterday in a post office in the eastcoast of Scotland. When he saw it he shouted out gollywog so just had to get it. They removed them from the Robinson's jam jar around 10 years ago. I don't know why they are deemed non PC? Are you from NZ?

I might be white but race seemed to have no restrictions on what I thought was a good toy. I can't see why a big smiley doll can be an offence. That's incorrect. I lived in Vietnam for 6 years. The symbol is mainly how you say , however on many temples the swastika is EXACTLY how Hitler had it. And while we're talking about Vietnam. I was spat on several times while I lived there because they thought I was American. The American flag to SOME older Vietnamese was a SYMBOL of oppression and hatered. A fantastic song. I think alot of people who listen to this song can relate to it and it is nice to know other feels the same way towards gollies. There will always be a never ending debate about golliwogs, but people will believe what they want to believe. I have a collection of over 150 gollies and they bring a smile to my face everyday. They are still available to buy from many places, you just need to know where to get them.
The word WOG {and yes you are right that one theories was western oriental gentleman} was invented in the late 30's in ENG !. Gollywog was invented with the doll in the 1860's in the US . They have about as much in common as the term wog and pollywog {the sientific name for tadpoles} .It is a coincedence that the three letters appear at the end of this word. Gollywog {one word} was invented in the 1700's and has it's heritage in scandinavian countries. It was never a negative racist term. Secondly, you're not a black people you're a black person. That is some bizarre logic dude. Just because the term "gollywog" wasn't originally considered offensive makes it ok to use now? If we apply that logic to the word "nigger" then it too should still be ok to use. It's etymology can be traced back the Latin word for "black". Your argument suggests that because the word "nigger" was "invented" by the ancient Romans and wasn't offensive back then, it should still be ok to use today... You'll find that the Golliwogg is accepted by the prettier white toys, and they play games and dance with him -- a mix of races that would have been considered outrageous at the time the story was written!

Anne and Andy are almost identical to the golly except for their colour. They are rediculous characherters too. I have no problem with them . That's incorrect. I lived in Vietnam for 6 years. The symbol is mainly how you say , however on many temples the swastika is EXACTLY how Hitler had it. And while we're talking about Vietnam. I was spat on several times while I lived there because they thought I was American. The American flag to SOME older Vietnamese was a SYMBOL of oppression and hatered. And I know that there are still alot of Dick heads {when I was in the states I met a few as well as abroad} who think that race has something to do with it. My nana did not intend it to be degrading and I NEVER saw it that way when I was a kid. Some other people intend their comments to hurt or to degrade. But not me. I still have one at home somewhere. When I was a kid it didn't occure to me that it had anything to do with colour it just happened to be that the doll looked that like as far a I knew. I thought maybe they were supposed to look like minstrels but thought no more of it. I don't think they were ever intended to be offensive in a racist way. It's very sad really,

i had a golliwog when i was little and played with it quite inosently. im not raceist. never even occurd to me it was ment to be a black person at the time because they are so obscure. i thort it was just a happy alien lol.

A fantastic song. I think alot of people who listen to this song can relate to it and it is nice to know other feels the same way towards gollies. There will always be a never ending debate about golliwogs, but people will believe what they want to believe. I have a collection of over 150 gollies and they bring a smile to my face everyday. They are still available to buy from many places, you just need to know where to get them.

The word WOG {and yes you are right that one theories was western oriental gentleman} was invented in the late 30's in ENG !. Gollywog was invented with the doll in the 1860's in the US . They have about as much in common as the term wog and pollywog {the sientific name for tadpoles} .It is a coincedence that the three letters appear at the end of this word. Cats have nothing to do with the word catastrophy, there is not one smudge of tar in my guitar !!. people see what they want to see.
