  • Contemporary African thriller - don't take this book on a safari holiday!

  • Now this is what I call REAL home cooking... I'm loving it!!!

  • do Kenyans have their own language or writing system or is everything in English?

  • @Microglia1 they got Swahili

  • @Microglia1 Most Kenyans have three languages Their Tribal mother tongue eg, "Luo" then Swahili the official Kenyan Language and then all education and exams are taken using English. I have a friend who runs a school in Kisii and the children speak to her in Swahili and she replies back in English and they hold conversations in two languages each speaking her own and the children are only in primary school! Mind boggling!

  • 3:28 Rebeca does not look happy.

  • Cooking food with plastic bag ? Im not sure it is healthy

  • @mysoukouss i used plastic bag in Korean cooking once. I was apprehensive at first, but they were specific for cooking, and now that I think about it, it really is no different from microwave ziplock containers.

  • @hbanana7 Thanks for explaining. It now makes sense. Good jobs for feeding the hard working Nairobians. Nothing tastes better than a plate of hot food when hungry. Your organic, natural unlike the mackdonalds fried food.

I miss the that meal so much.

    Rich. USA

  • @hbanana7 ; Thanks for clarifying. It is perfectly okay the plastic is specific for cooking. It surely saves time and funds

That food looks very yammy- i live in the west and i really miss that natural home food. Good job there and God bless.

  • I live in Botswana and I need to visit Kenya soon. So this show was helpful.

  • Thank you for this interesting piece. It really makes one want to try different foods from different places. The description is however misleading. During the shoot what evidence of poor hygene or food preaparation practices did you observe? And is the local government doing anything about it?

  • @gm076132 Do you think Kenyans have the money, materials, or facilities to practice your hygienic techniques? I've eaten insects and other things around the world that would probably make you puke. It was all the delicious and cooked with love. I've never gotten sick either, at least from eating anything abroad. FYI the cooking process eliminates 99.9% of all pathogens so don't worry. As Andrew Zimmern says “if it looks good eat it”. The government has enough problems to deal with.

  • @wmsymms yeah, the people getting sick were the people eating the FAST foods, and restraunt foods.

  • @wmsymms I can't agree more. Just having internet + speak English on youtube = a privileged world people. The rest of the world who can't write silly comments on youtube eat a much more diverse "diet" and really don't care about your ethical stance on how certain animals should be killed for food.

  • Ngai, can someone out there tell customers to bring food from home please??????????????????????????? This food is no good for anyones stomach. You do not know what your eating. STOP THIS MADNESS

  • Delicioso food lakini very dangerous. The cooking style not one cook is wearing gloves when serving food. They use their hands to taste if it has enough sault.

Good food for those who dont know. murder food for those who knows. solution- Please 100 x cook your own meal home and take small portion of it for lunch art your work even if your looking for a job carry your meal with you you eat under the tree but you eat safe food. God of all gods please eat what you cooked or your die sooner .

  • This brings back memories!! I MISS THE NYAM CHOM VINOMA SANA!!!!!!

  • Kenyans doesn't need to become vegetarian because the meat is all natural.

  • most of the food looks good in my opinion

  • good god the plastic bag in the boiling water is unacceptable. the risk of health is more than then the wood fire or another pot saved! however the serving is plentiful and its sad how kenyans cant afford still to buy this foods.

  • the divide between rich and poor is extreme

  • wow interesting

but the plastic bag in the boiling water is questionable, isn't that somewhat toxic?

  • How?

  • what? hot dogs? pizza? obviously, you've never been out of north america.

  • we have more then that

  • like hell.

  • and that why many ppl dies from obesity

  • @sailorcharlene I kenya people die from starvation not obesity.

  • @slytheron it was a reply to someone who said usa had the best food ever

  • @sailorcharlene Meaning tasteless, greasy plentiful, then I guess yes. lol. What the US has is piles and piles of food, but is it good, nope!

  • @slytheron go back home then damme

  • I enjoy AlJazeera English programming. To bad my cable company doesn't carry it.

  • black plastic back that is digusting

  • lawd god i'd never eat something that was boiled in a black plastic bag. yuck that must cause so many health problems and poisoning.

  • why is the lady trying to speak swahili with a british accent LOL

  • The accent in Kenya is British. Remember, it used to be British East Africa.

  • british shit . They ruined the place .

  • Yes, sir you are right.

  • if every rich ppl give charity thr will be no poverty

  • Don't be so myopic

  • It will just make people lazy..

  • Giving to charity won't account for the greed and indifference of others. For example, the US has spent billions on Afghanistan and Iraq for infrastructure and jobs, but you don't see much improvement because the money goes into the pockets of the wrong people.

  • IJambo all...

I love Kenya and kenys foods specially fresh food ,Organic frout and vegies dishes

I also love my Kikuyu.Lueo ,Makamba,Jalwoo foods. cooking mixed with typical Indian Pakistani spicy dishes.Haraka haraka Mama tangneza chukula sasa.Asanti sanna Naima Choma .Ahhhhh>>>>

  • aww i love kenyans :]

i want to try some of kenya's traditional foods, i have had ethiopian food and its very good.

  • man i miss githeri, muthokoi, mbembe imechomwa with lemon pili pili

  • As a Somali and lived in Nairobi as a refugee for a long time I have to say it is a great country to be in. Though few abuse their authority such as the police for money, the Nairobi communities are very polite, educated and decent people to be with.

  • cops are brutal to all of us in kenya...so long as you r poor

  • @Axmedkoole i agree with you there, i went to Nairobi last year and i was very happy to see nice polite people. i dont think i can find people like that in america. people here are mean and rude. there are very few polite people where i live in america.

  • @potlick18 How much is a shilling worth? like 120 shillings?

Could I easily buy some bananas for cheap price?

  • @sirchristian12 1 us dollar is worth around 70 to 75 shillings. i think the highest the value of the dollar iv seen go over there 80 shillings. i was only there for 2 weeks and the value was changing all the time. i didn't buy bananas so im not sure how much they are. i ate my food at the hotels, restraunts, and friend's houses. the only thing i bought in a store was coca cola.

  • @Axmedkoole Is Kenya a safe enough country? I might be going there.

  • well, i loved my trip n kenya, grt food though i had little choices. i was visiting a friend so she took me out for safari too, hippo there were great...and beautiful country.

  • Notice at 08:34 that they didn't eat the meat lol

  • I was in Nairobi for a month and I never saw a marketplace like that. Where was that?

All my food came from the street markets, where they chopped the meat on tree stumps & I never saw a refrigerator the whole time I was there.

I spent every single night either tossing n' turning in pain or tossing up everything I ate that day.

Now, I'm having a hard time getting used to eating American food again.

  • I was in Hell for a month and i never saw internet.

All my food came from grandma, where they chopped meat on streets & (woot shift key!) I never saw a Hip-hopopotimus the whole time i waz there.

    * i like enter key*

Now im having a hard time hating americans. i win /bow

  • There are reasons why foreign developers start businesses there and scurry back to their native countries. Kenya is just a tourist country and will never be anything more.

If you eat the food there, you're really taking a big risk. They drink fetched water & wash them fruits and vegetables in it. Plus, you'll be lucky to find one single building that has hot water.

  • how many cells does your brain have, is it 1 or 2?

  • I lived there; I know. Right there in the Zimmerman apartments in the Guthrie area.

I drank the fetched water, ate the green oranges, & had the basin baths every night just like a Kenyan. Honeslty though, I miss Kenya & can't wait to go back. It's just really hard to live there if you're an American.

  • @ianlondeo And yet these people are much happier and less depressed than your average American. Should tell you something, life isn't about material things, there's much more that most westerners miss.

  • man I love Coasto food!!!!!

  • Oh well, people take a chance on poor sanitation and preparation methods when they eat at fast food restaurants and casual restaurants all the time! Not to say that some street food sellers shouldn't try to be more sanitary-they should when possible- but then again that goes for formal restaurant businesses-(or home cooked food for that matter). Whether informal/formal some places/people cook stuff in a healthy way and have better sanitation than other places/people. That just the way it is.

  • ohhh i miss kenya- the food is unbelievable, the best! roast maize and ndizi tamu and chapatti na maharagwe.. fantastic. napenda kenya sana

  • i envy that u were there so much..

  • kenya kenya kenya love kenya . there is no place like. nairobi went in may 2008 kenya. mombasa nairobi and i loved it you go and see for your self. but dont fuck with da police. cause they are pull shit,

  • Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle , U.S. Hospital ,said that we should not be heating our food in themicrowave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combinationof fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimatelyinto the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as CorningWare, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results

  • yeah but tis boid in the "open" with plastic. Most ppl in kenya just don't use microwave ( thank god ) .

  • rasobasiczar

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

u know jack shit.. kenyan food, african food. Or shall i Say FuFu.. Lol

best eva.. shut ya mout. den why u watchin dis?

    Dun Test kenya FOOLL!!

  • braaaap u do nt nw about kenya best food ever

  • who gives a shit where u were born NDEGE! just do tha work u was hired for, n stop braggin. we dont care where u grew up.all we want is news! so be strait!

  • The food the woman was cooking at home looks delicious, but it seems that the prepartion methods are unsanitary! The environment just didn't look clean.

  • I don't think ppl understand the overall strength of immunity our ppl have, these ppl can survive through it and always have. Having said that, I wouldn't advice ppl to risk eating any street food and I find hygiene is highly ignored

  • @oridniv I am British and I lived two and a half years in Kenya and yes your natural immunity does build up a couple of horrendous stomach upsets when I first arrived then I was OK the thing that got me baffled was when I travelled from the Kisii Highlands to Nairobi I always had Bronchitis or similar? some tried to tell me it was like hay fever? But the shops are full of bronchial medicine one dubious but good one containing creosote!

  • a big plastic bag in there oh my ... plastic is not good fo your health

  • Indeed, very nasty chemicals gets released when plastic gets cooked.

  • U can eat plastics too. When u r black black, i mean black black, nothing worries u. Have anice day .Gen idi LA USA.

  • Hehe, I know exactly what u mean. I study food and want to go back home and educate our ppl on the essence of being black and knowing not all their energy has to come from food.

  • was wondering how come ha accent was so emmaculate i get it now

  • nothing beats mahindi choma

  • Man I can't wait to go back home next month.

  • man i grew up on this street food si hui ita madondo good memories

  • Boiling in plastic bag might not be a good idea. Instead use a smaller metal container put inside the larger one.

  • yenyewe

  • Boiling in plastic bag scared me to death!

  • The synthetic bio-phenol estrogen they use in plastics aid uncontrollable hormone regulation, could explain some ppls extreme mood swings. When they boil it it truly releases the toxins into the food, she's better off using aluminum foil or just buying a second pot.

  • I am from mombasaa. And yes we coasterians can COOK

  • Nyinyi wanawake wacheni upuzi

  • looks nice

  • rich of flavour!!YUM!but y all meat...:( Anyways...the Dawa DUde...haha I d like to try that cocktail i bet it is much better than those at the bars around Melb.LOLz

  • I love this edition of street food! The food looked amazing. Kenyan food culture looks so rich! It's funny when she talks about "Carnivore" and says "you could admire the majestic species, then come and eat them!" Like all "Street Food" shows, there is political bent. And here it seems to be inflation. So it was interesting to learn that food prices are some what out of step with what the general population can afford. I can't wait to visit Kenya, it looks amazing.

  • That Carnivore place looks good.

  • i've been there and it's awsum!!

  • It's the place to be on newyears if u like to party

  • @chadsexinton It IS good. lol

  • This is one of the best parts of Street Food!!! The music is great!!

  • Wow, that's a good micro-economical strategy she's got going.

  • Nairobi/Kenya & Ethiopia have suddenly risen quite close to the top of my "Trips I must take" list.

    These vids are absolutely woderful!!

    I love them thanks.

  • @michaelmage Please put Kenya at the Very top, coz that's where it belongs lol.

  • nyinyi waschana wacheni kujifanya wazungu. Aii bwana kuleni kachumbari na munyamaze. lol. just playing tho

  • Well done Yvonne for presenting this documentary...I grew up on street food. Its yummy and relatively cheaper.

  • i miss the mondazi, choma and ugali.

  • lol ugali is so bad but i love chapati and its not kenyan we somalis eat it too.

  • @suspendedb4 chapati is as Kenyan as biriani or anything else. All these foods were brought to us many centuries ago and thus have become Kenyan as any other.

  • u mean mandazi. and ongeza kachumbari na punani.
