Damn, it's always England that has tell us Americans what the hell is going on in our own backyard: the Ramones, the blues, everything.... it was England who came up with labeling a music genre: punk. We only had a magazine named Punk. Punk came from England. The Stooges are the root.
All those great sixties acts had to teach us about the blues and R&B; and out here in Chicago, people still don't get it. Americans take everything for granted.
@SWISSCOLORVISION Alan Vega of Suicide claims to have come up with the term "punk" to describe music, first using it on fliers for Suicide gigs as "A Punk Music Mass."
@MyFairLaser your right, and then I guess Creem latter came who came up with 'punk rock' term, and then there was Punk Magazine. I don't think Suicide ever considered their music to be called punk as a genre, though. Punk to me is more a fashion statement, that's where the Sex Pistols come in and McLaren and Westwood with their clothing store Sex. After all punk rock is just sped up rock n' roll, something that's been done since its inception.
@SWISSCOLORVISION See, that's a good point of debate, because some people might say Arab On Radar is "punk" in a certain sense, but they really aren't if you consider punk to have only existed from 1976-1980. But then, some people would say The Velvet Underground unknowingly invented punk back in the 60's, so it's a very subjective thing.
As far as England goes, I think Europe is much more in tune with the American underground than America itself, which is funny.
@MyFairLaser - I have to go with you on this one. I think formally Arab on Radar and US Maple and others of the genre bear resemblance to punk, I think conceptually it is far more advanced than punk in it's deconstructionism and intuition. And unlike actual punk, not serving as fashion statements.
@SWISSCOLORVISION - Punk, like everything else, started pure as a great intellectual, aesthetic and cultural idea that is appropriated by the mediocre and the merchants and becomes a fashion statement. And it's hard to restrict punk to an era - Music Machine 1966, Sex pistols 1976, Halo of Flies 1986 - the cycle returns. The idea and label has been around probably most of the 20th century.
@bnfox you're right; a good start is the Rhino box set: Loud, Fast & Out of Control: The Wild Sounds of 50's Rock (box set). 'Punk Rock' was all about the fashion (Malcolm and Vivian's SEX SHOP via America- Richard Hell etc.) more than a 'original genre'. since it's just regurgitated fast 50's rock n' roll music with a new fashion sense.
@SWISSCOLORVISION - punk came from England? You DO know that Malcolm McClaren managed the NY Dolls in 1975 and saw the Ramones and Richard Hell before returning to England and creating the Sex Pistols? English punk kicks ass but it didn't start there.
@bnfox At the time, NY Dolls were considered, and still considered a Rolling Stones rip off band; and Richard Hell denies the punk tag, along with Iggy Pop and the Stooges who were before the Ramones, who were also no doubt, major influences, but the Ramones didn't consider themselves 'Punk Rock' at the time, despite their coverage in 'Punk Magazine' that also strongly influenced Malcolm McClaren and the Sex Pistols; yet 'Punk Magazine' was just that, a magazine, and not a genre of music.
Basically, Malcolm and the Sex Pistols just stole everything from America; just like the Beatles and the Stones and Zeppelin and Cream and everybody else from England
stole 'the blues' form America; and then America stole it back form England,
thus vice versa; its a never ending incestuous fuck.
Ahh great bit of vinyl that, Phil Bonnet was one hell of a producer - not sure about the poster tho!

Punk was more of fashion movement if anything.
