I did something similar.

I love this wonderful girl but she's already with someone else. So I kept a respectful distance from her but I just had to tell her in the end. Like the guy in the movie, there was no hope or agenda...other than wanting to let her know.

I think he needed to do this, so he can get it out in the open and move on. We know that as people if we hold on to emotions it can kill us. It is a good way, a safe way to do something sweet, clear the air without disrespecting his friend.
