With most manufacturers it would weigh more as has been mentioned. Not the Kanstul. Therefore you can manage it. That's why the band director in Texas was so surprised when he picked it up.
I'm just a little curious about the weight, because I play on the Yamaha 202 which weighs about 50lbs (when we went on tour to Malaysia we weighed them), and it's around the size (probably smaller) of the 5/4 in your video, though you say its only weighs about 24lbs.
@195100003 I can vouch for the weight, although it may be closer to 28 lbs. They're bulky, but not outrageously heavy, either. They use a thinner gauge of brass than what my concert tuba has, FWIW.
@BarracksSi You have a great point and that's probably why there is a huge difference in the weight, only thing is when we went of tour to Malaysia, we had to weight them for the flight, and in their cases it read 55ish lbs, and the case is only around 5-10lbs.
He's also fudging the truth when it comes to Kanstul and DCI - "all of them march Kanstul" (maybe half); 16 brass titles (BD, who won many on King, and Zig didn't design the King contras; and they use Dynasty now anyway). Honestly, I'm disappointed in his sales pitch, top to bottom.
I don't think Jack ever marched one of these. Hold it against your head? I haven't had to do that since I started contra over twenty years ago. He's got it sitting way too close to his neck, too, which makes it tilt outboard and forces his left hand to hold it awkwardly high.
How often does Kanstul sponsor schools? Specifically Riverside City College in Riverside, CA. We were supposed to have a brass sponsor, but it fell through. Now we have the same instruments from a while ago. We have 20 tuba players this year and only own 16 tubas, all old (still plays alright).
Never said Sousaphones do not get a good sound. But I did say that a tuba gets more of the low end due to its design. A big bell produces highs not lows. That's why Mariachi trumpet players like a big flare to the bell. The style of music they play has a ringing sound to it. With low brass, especially on the field, you want the bottom to be full and hit you in the gut when the crescendo's happen. That's why the Corps sound the way they do. They are playing Tubas and not Sousaphones.
Uumm, Conn 20ks dominate. For marching, they have more volume and they DO have a good tone! I hate it when people bash sousaphones, if you don't think they sound good you've never played a good one, and if you still don't think they sound good then you must not be very good at tuba.
@MrGuitar144 This is what I always have to say. I've heard several times over the past few years "any tuba is better than any sousa" I'll take the 20K over a Yammy 201M. Even over one of these. Conn and king even made oversized sousas back in the day. And I hear they are fantastic (never tried one myself)
@stevrsc They are, I like my 10 year old beat up Conn almost as much as the 5 year old Mirafone I play during concert band. My only complaint is that it's only three valves and it's not as open as the Mirafone. But its loud and rich, great sound when you put a good player behind it.
man, im a tuba player, and my high school has contras. they are Yamahas, but they dont have the valves like the one's on this contra. my school's tuba are convertable ones (go from concert to Contras) so the valves are in the same place as with the concert version. and the slides aren't like the ones on this one either. i wish my school had these ones though.
In reply to the comment "Is the Contra really that Heavy" I would have to say "At 24 lbs. that's not that Heavy" A typical Sousaphone weighs more than that. Also it is PERFECTLY BALANCED. As long as you hold it to your head and stand up straight you will have no problem. Nothing beats the sound of a Tuba...especially a Kanstul! It's what made the Corps what they are today.
If you would like to hear KANSTUL TUBA'S played beautifully, listen to the player's on my father's ZIGMAUNT KANSTUL SIGNATURE/YORK STYLE TUBA'S. Incredible instruments like all KANSTUL BRASSWINDS.
Lastly, I would like to comment on the CONVERTIBILITY of the KANSTUL MARCHING TUBA'S. The whole VALVE SECTION comes out. You have an extra 6th branch and Leadpipe. One for MARCHING and one for CONCERT. In the MARCHING POSITION the VALVE SECTION is forward for good good over the LEFT SHOULDER CONTROL. In CONCERT POSITION it is mounted in the MIDDLE for a prefered SIDE ACTION POSITION. However the FULL SIZE in CONCERT is MOUNTED LOWER for a YOUNG PLAYER to be able to play the FULL SIZE instrument.
As for Sousaphone VS. Tuba. The reason the Sousaphone was invented and named after John Philips Sousa, was they use to have these beautiful oversized tuba's like the YORK MONSTER Eb. You couldn't MARCH with them. Thus the Sousaphone. However, a LARGE BELL like what's on a Sousaphone, produces HIGHS not LOWS. That's why MARIACHI trumpet players like LARGE FLARED BELLS. For the HIGHS. You want the opposite in a low brass horn like a TUBA. That's in part why CORPS sound as they do. It's the BOTTOM.
Thank you all for your comments. While I know I am not a tuba player I thought I could put enough air behind it to show the RESONANCE of the instrument. That is what I was trying to accomplish. The reason the corps don't have the RESONANCE they had is for two reasons: 1) they are no longer playing in the Key of G which is a minor third lower. 2) My father's horns RESONATE like no others. Just listen to DCI championship corps year 2000 and before. Sounds like a Church Organ.
And on a good note, those horns are beautiful, and seem very well made. I don't understand how the full-size horn is convertible with the valves so far back, but I'm sure I could figure it out. Thank you for sharing this video!
Jack, all due respect, since these are undoubtedly amazing instruments...but, your demo shows nothing, in fact, the tone is so bad that it probably would turn some prospective buyers away. Get a player, even a HS student, to do the demo. PLEASE! :)
"this will produce a lot more sound than like a sousaphone..."
Are you referring to sousaphones made today or all sousaphones ever made? Surely not the latter! Have you heard a group of Jumbo sousaphones? Of course they weren't made for marching - no kid wants to hold a 40+ pound sousaphone. I'm surprised Kanstul hasn't made a good sousaphone...
Thanks. A tuba player I'm not. However hopefully the Band Directors got a chance to hear it's fullness of sound. Really covers the field especially when you have a real tuba player behind it. Maybe we can use you next time.
nice tubas, me Pablo Garibaldi, made all the tooling involved in making this instrument

@BarracksSi Maybe a little off but not to far off. As for BD they are playing King now not Dynasty. There is a reason for that as well.

You picked it up wrong.. :P
Then again, that's just not how I learned it..
Also, the contra is a beetch to snap right. Especially compared to sousa (which is hard to snap anyways).
Regarding this comment argument, for some, it's more of a visual choice as well. It's hard to do them visuals with a sousa.
Especially in a modern field band...
