I think lyrics that make the mind wander, and produce imagery are what I try to achieve.

They are both important. The words tell a story, and if possible, the music should tell the same story. I'm still working on the musical side :)

It can help if you learn to play an instrument, which you might already. Then it's up to your imagination. Start with something simple, or just spend time picking apart your favourite songs, and listen to each part of the song. The percussion (if any). The bass. Each other element. Work out which part each plays to make the whole tune :)

That's how I look at songs. As a group of things making different sounds that work with each other :)

Whichever comes to you first. Some musicians write with music first. Then they fit words around the music. Some do it the other way around. Writing words. Then making music to fit the words. I write both ways. Whatever comes into my head first :)

Try both methods. One might work better for you than the other.
