  • Wow, it is nostalgic, and still not lost! I love the look those cams give and when you are holding it, it is just more tangible, relatable and heavier! This aint heavy, its my camera!

  • Very cool stuff, John... Both yours and Ret80's!

  • Brilliant, JR!!! Absolutely love your passion and eccentricity my man!

  • Awesome video from the authority in Analog anything!!!!!!!!!!

  • And thank YOU for listening and putting up with all my lame insanity!!

  • Had to sub when i heard the dr who and red dwarf:D

  • The man knows his music!

  • this is really well done. You have a gift. You look so sure of yourself. I've always admired that in people. It's like you're saying. This is important and this is something you need to see.

I've never had that kind of confidence.

  • My comment on your channel I think says it all. Truly, you made my day!

  • I want my MTV

and more refreshing vlogs like this

    right on, John !

    ~be well

  • If I could, I would singlehandedly bring back MTV exactly the way it was in 1984 after Thriller!

    Thanks dude :)

  • Thanks for the history lesson on the clap clapper lol Wow, look at your camera, nice!

  • great vid! i have always liked them! :)

  • Arn't those white vests referred to as 'wife-beaters'? Should I be worried!? ;)

We didn't have a video camera in my family until the mid 90s. My grandad was very much into film though, I remember making silent films a la Charley Chaplain style with him in the garden when I was about 6, I'd love to know what's happened to all his film reels and equipment!

The music alone got me on a nostalgia trip on Ret80s video! Looks like you have a kindred spirit there!

  • Ahhhh... Rex Tangle! (moment of silence).

Back in the mid-80s I was working for a small, local tv station in San Luis Obispo. We used JVC field cameras, recording on 3/4" tape - they weighed a ton, but it was great to work with. And the big old Sony editing stations were a blast.

  • Great episode!!

  • Ying and Yang of YouTube. Haha, that is great :)

  • Thank you so much John, I am at a complete loss of words!!! Seeing this video brought a huge smile to me. I truly appreciate everything you have done, your efforts to continue using the technology will not go unwatched!

Also, we actually have a short sci-fi film in the works (it will be done by next week) it will be shot entirely on the JVC. It will emphasize the use of analogue techniques and technology. In essence, a retro sci-fi.

Thank you John and thank you all!

  • The pleasure's mine, we're the few but the proud!

And your quote "It's like painting with a different palate... the images that they produce are unique and individual ... why not grab an old camcorder and let the art do the work =)"

I couldn't have said that more eloquently if I tried. Thanks for the inspiration!

Seriously looking forward to your film :)

  • Will check him out.

  • Thanks Ran, I believe he's truly going to do truly great stuff.

  • I'll check him out. I miss RexTangle!!!

  • I think I've memorized every video Rex ever did. What an influence he was on me!

  • I really do miss manual focus, gotta say.

And nice to see you opining again.

    What happened to RexTangle, anyway??

  • Manual focus was so readily available on consumer camcorders as were Microphone inputs and earphones, and boom ... gone. It's pathetic what they're foisting on us today as far as features.

Can't say for sure what happened to Rex, but I think about his works all of the time :)

  • Love you, buddy!

  • Me too! I've neglected your channel but no longer Z ... I drink to you, a true living legend.

  • Wow, that old camera still gets a terrific picture! Cool stuff John - as always, thank you for bringing him to our attention. And Hi! It's awfully nice to see you.

  • Hi! The feeling is mutual :) I finally found a kindred spirit that appreciates old camcorders.

  • Rocking the old school in a high tech world. Lovin' it!

  • Gotta savor the sour to better appreciate the sweet ;) Great to see you buddy :)
