god i have never seen so much snow. i am glad that i didn't move to poughkeepsie for school this year. I'm just soaking up rays in beautiful santa clara, california :D
Yep I just experienced my first thundersnow event, it was awesome the thunder was pretty loud too indicating the lightning struck nearby for snow acts as a sound barrier.
Since everybody is telling where we live and how much snow we got ... I live in Texas and all we got was sleet and it froze over the roads which means about 3 days off from school...(: (February 1st)
i wish where i live we could get that! in NC the largest amount of snow we probably have gotten is around 10 inches and that makes school called off for a week.
@KodyCena It's more than even what you say. Certain amount of snow also in short time frame it is occuring as well. A meterologist here in New England said that thunder and lightening is criteria for a blizzard. So maybe he mis spoke.
@ciao614 Sure.... Thunder can be part of a blizzard. But a storm does not require thunder to be classified as a blizzard. You can have a blizzard without thunder.
wow im from oregon and never thought thunder and snow would ever happen and it does i guess wow, i like thunder and lightning but in winter it would be wicked in December 2010 we had a tornado that hit Aumsville and we had the most wicked of clouds no tornado where i live but i was looking for it!
it happened last night at perry hall and the power flashed two times for 10 seconds and the power went out until about nine pm its weird how severe the lightning was when i saw it.
i am 19 years old and live in the south eastern part of PA and i have never seen one and from what i heard i dont ever want to either because of the wind and really heavy snow that can bring down trees and power lines... but still i would like to see atleast one cause of the rarity. and were are supposed to have a really bad one tonight.
You do not want this kind of storm. I had to drive from Yarmouthport to Brewster in it. There was something like a 25 degree drop in temperature in a very short time, there were water spouts, and thousands of trees downed. The Cape got dive-bombed with winds clocked at 101 mph at one spot in Dennis. It was a weird phenomenon. We took our lives in our hands driving home, but thankfully throughout the storm nobody was killed. I will never forget it!
@louiseo0905 YEA...not so true as these storms are very strong...am in one now ...life pretty much stops as these storms can easily kill u.i cant see 2 feet in front of my face.nothing fantastic..
I'm 14 and I live in Maine and I have yet to live through something like this, at least to my memory I haven't. Just the other night in Connecticut there was some thunder snow.. but none in Maine. ):
@TheDerpe I was young when I had my first thudersnow,I was playing out side in the snow, next thing I hear "CRASH!" A huge bolt of thuder, I was like "WHA?!!?!"
We had a record of 18" of snow in a 24 hour period in Augusta, GA Feb. 9-10, 1973.
During this snowfall, we had lightning and thunder! I now live in the Northeast and have YET to see that much snow in a 24 hour period, with thunder!!! lol
I was in Walpole, MA for this storm, right near Gillette Statdium. There was around 15" there and at least 3 hours of blizzard criteria. Also, pretty remarkable thunder and lightning.
However the worst weather was over Cape Cod. Winds gusts between 80-100mph and I believe gusted over 100mph.! Plus the coastal erosion.
Lightning can hit objects and people during snowstorms. A church in Pensalvania was hit by lightning during a snowstorm sometimes in the 80s and caught on fire. On a different occasion a man was hit by lightning when he was walking outside during a snowstorm.
I got my info from the weather guide calanders the weather channel puts out. Most lightning in snow storms is cloud to cloud but occasionally you also get cloud to ground lightning strikes.
For a storm to be classified as a blizzard it must meet certain criteria. Thunder is one of them:) Gotta love it! I live not far from where this was..i don't remember this storm but when you have as many as we do in New England they are hard to keep track of:)
Your welcome. However thunder is not a criteria for a blizzard.
The National Weather Service defines a blizzard as large amounts of falling OR blowing snow with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibilities of less than 1/4 of a mile for an extended period of time (greater than 3 hours).
Sorry but I had heard years and years ago that thunder & lightening was a critieria for a true blizzard. Maybe they have changed that criteria since it's such a rare occurance?
@dodgerdannyboy Ironically it isn't but I liked your attempted conclusion:) You do know why it's really called New England right?..and you're just messing with me right?.. :)
@ciao614 Yes of course I know, New England was fore named by pilgrims who settled in north America from England in 1620 the name New England was sanctioned on November 3 the same year. I can trace my family back to the 1500s from Ireland with some moving to Massachusetts and still living in the Boston area today, In fact like most things American you can generally find a British or Irish root. But you knew that right ;-)
@dodgerdannyboy yes i did:) Have you ever visited America or Massachusetts for that matter? My paternal side hails from Cork and settled in Boston. Once I get over my fear of flying I hope to go to Ireland and England:)
@F1Fanatiko Meaning there is no global warming? Tell that to the polar bears who usually live on ice above the Arctic Circle and now have to tread water.
@g1b2j3j4s5 Global warming was a term made up to gain wealth. There is no such thing as Global warming in the sense they want to push on us. MIT professor said the Sun is getting hotter and has nothing to do with what they are telling us...(i.e. pollutents, gases, etc) Google it my friend:)
I heard there was some real nasty thunder with snow on 12/9/05....up near the Boston area.....here in southern RI...we had heavy snow squalls but not much thunder activities.... last time I had thunder with snow was on 4/9/96.
yea here in boston we are gettin a major snowstorm that might become blizzard like conditions i wont b suprised if we see thundersnow just like 1 day in dec 2005 during a storm
I live in Chatham, Kent, UK and we had Thunder Snow last night with lightning as well. Very weird. According to the news, Thunder Snow is extremely rare so I was lucky to see it!
Ahh! I rember this! I was at a freinds house drinking hot coco cause we had the day off, and it started thundering I was like ummm? thats odd. haha I sooo rember this!
Lol Ive never seen Snow in my life. Well Ive seen it Flury before up In Wisconsin December 2005. I lived in Florida all my life Deep North Florida to be infact on the Border, Its Just cold, and Windy in the Winter, and Bone Dry. We will get Rainstorms before we get cold fronts. Ive only seen a Flury, and 4 inches of snow on the Ground.
lol yeah one time i was walking around with my friends and it was snowing fucking hard, and we never expected to see lightning light everything up around us.. scared the shit out of us because it was close and loud.
haha.. a snow storm happened where i live... my and my sister was out side playing xD. we didn't even care how cold it was.. lol it was funny. school was closed. everyone was home.. but me and my sis was outside play xD .. lolz
New England has similar conditions in the winter to Ottawa, especially Northern New England and I can tell you that even in Ottawa this not a "flurry"
had thunder and lightening in nc march 1, 09. it was as bad as any storm in the summer. i'd heard a rumble or two or thunder during snow but never anything like what went on this night.
then there was 12 inches of snow within about 3 hours. wild stuff
yeah, i heard we might get some tomorow here in milwaukee. i better not miss something that could be once in a life time opportunity cuz of school not being canceled. o well, lets hope we have no school tomorow.
haha, that's exactly why im researching it right now. i had never heard the term thundersnow before, and since they keep saying we're going to get it, why not look it up? ;]
I'm from Michigan. Thundersnow was so cool when it (rarely) happened. Thnx for posing this. I've actually gotten into arguments from people saying 'No it doesn't' (thunder when it snows).
I would run out and act like i`m on Mount Everest.

Man oh man that December 9th 2005 storm was insane. 105 mph winds on Block Island, 80 on my home island of Nantucket.

I'm from Michigan. Thundersnow was so cool when it (rarely) happened. Thnx for posing this. I've actually gotten into arguments from people saying 'No it doesn't' (thunder when it snows).
