Slavery happened because we black people didn't have advanced weapons to defend ourselves. Even though we had sophisticated political and religious institutions before Islam and Christianity. Blighted the continent the man with the best gun makes the rules. If you have good weapons predatory groups won't take advantage of you its about power not colour.
nice video clip.........the slave trade was responsible for the state of underdevelopment africa is in up to the present day.....People in developed countries still look down on africans because of the slave mentality they still habour...This is responsible for the increasing reports of racial abuse all over the world....
This was an interesting film. Wouldn't it be great if the Archbishops posted regular videos on topical issues? It would act as a focal point for ethical and political debates, and maybe inspire people to engage in issues, maybe even from a Christian perspective. I look forward to more.
An excellent and important film. Well done for putting it on YouTube. I too struggle with the Anglican Church as a PCC member, but this film is an example of why it is not moribund. Let's stop the traffik!
This is important, thank you for posting it. Here is evidence of the long term cost of greed. This is the basis for the West's entire economic existence and the root-greed-is with us still. It is still profitable to dehumanize people, to objectify and exploit, but at what cost?
One of the few times the British did something right in Colonial times was in 1896 in the shortest war on record forcing the Sultan to end slavery. The movement for the abolution of slavery was something the Church of England undertook (not without internal resistance) and we should celebrate that. The Archbishops remind us that slavery still exists in this world and we must continue to fight it.
nealeadams needs to check his history. The Church of England did not "undertake the movement for the abolition of slavery". Wilberforce and the Clapham Sect won the abolition of salvery in spite of opposition and even mockery from Church of England bishops.
Wonderful reminder of the horror of the past. Let us never forget racism, and that it still exists in many parts of the world. Continued prayer is always needed especially for many in the first world who live in daily fear of racism and abuse, abuse so great that it borders on slavery.
i feel that i should thank you for highlighting the 200 years of abolation of slavery. i hope there will be a sermon on this in the minister upon then archbishops return.
As will I. It is time for us to move forward, with grace and with dignity. It is time for us all to ask what we, each and every one of us, can do to effect loving and positive change.
Very Moving.. I can't imagine the feeling of actually touching chains that had been used fr over 200 years to hold human beings captive. The whole lack of humanity involved in slavery appalls to this day.
Of course slavery was wrong but Britain with George Wilberforce were the 1st ones to ban it.Why not ask about the muslim slave traders who SOLD the slaves to western nations ?and tell of slavery still going on in Asia & Middle East.I am sick of this political correctness and the Anglican Church has been hijacked by the Liberals,Gays& Left for it's own purposes.
I for one as a PCC member of this moribund Church will soon be leaving.
Forget political correctness, what about compassion? The church is about love, forgiveness and acceptance. We all know other nations played, and continue to play, a larger role in the slave trade. Does that mean we should forget the role we took? This video avoids anger and politics, instead focusing on reflection and understanding, perhaps you should do the same.
Amazing Grace is generally an overplayed hymn but it was very appropriate in the setting given John Newton's history in the slave trade.

Zanzibar
This is the finest place I have known in all of Africa to rest before my final journey.
An illusive place where nothing is as it seems.
I am mesmerised......
