I'm not a make-up artist and don't plan on becoming one (though I wish I had the talent), but that end bit of your video inspired me with my own career goals. Thank you =)
Hi! I'm a 16 year old girl living in Los Angeles, and I aspire to be a high-fashion makeup artist. My inspiration is Pat McGrath. I'm working on my portfolio now, but I'm kind of stuck as to where to get things going. I've been absolutely in love with the art of makeup for roughly 2 years now, and I think I've acquired the skills to really get things going, for example an internship or something along those lines. Any advice? Thank you so much, I love your channel!
Lisa, I just want to share with you that I am so inspired by your work, your poise, and your passion, which you express with such elegance. I have always had a passion for makeup and hair, but for some reason it has taken me until now-in my early 30's and with 3 kids- to decide to pursue this as a career. I have learned so much from you, as well as some wonderfully written books and just playing on various faces, lol. Just thought you should know what a positive influence you are!
it seems like now a days it would be harder to become a make up artist for an A-list celebrity, just because they normally stay loyal to only a handful of fabulous make up artist.
Ok I don't know why women nowadays use little make up, women shoul wear a lot of make up because ithey look sexy and feminim when they use it a lot like in the late seventies and eighties women were very neat and beautiful vecause of their make up and hair I just don't like this boring style
What are your views on studying make up & how necessary it is in finding work? Would working on building a strong portfolio and attempting to jump straight into finding work/work experience be highly unrealistic without any formal training? If so which courses are generally the most revered? Would the courses that last a term or half a year at places such as Greasepaint be worth the investment?
I'd love to be a fashion/editorial makeup artist. But the problem is that Im only 16 and I live in a small country in the central Europe and there is nothing here... I'd love to study in new york, and if i made it all the way there, I'd be so close to my dream, wouldn't I? I'm just afraid, cuz I don't have any makeup school done, though I attended art classes for 9 years and I can really play with colors, but I still think it's just not enough. any tips? thanks :) you're an amazing person! :)
Lisa, I just love you. Could you be any more compassionate? Kevin Aucoin said that he worked in the meanest, most superficial industry in the world and yet he maintained his compassion for people. I believe you have as well. I don't know of many successful people, in any industry, that would take the time to teach others how to get to where they are, as you have. Thank you for the motivation and advice. I'm glad to know how successful you are because you truly deserve every bit of it!
thank you sooo much for this , really YOUR NOT A BORE i could listen for hours. im sure if you love make up and going for your dreams everyone feels the same way! THANK YOU again !!! i cant wait for fashion make up <3 ^_^
My dream is to become a bridal make up artist and I'm also doing beauty therapy at college so once I've finished 2 years of college I'm going to train as a bridal make up artist and set up my own business doing make up and beauty treatment of bridal parties and special occasions :) this video was great thank you Lisa xx
Hi Lisa! I live in NYC and I'm pursuing Make up Artistry and count you as somewhat of a YT make up mentor :) I think its so lovely of you to be so generous with us. I have a question about some assisting guidelines, as someone who is starting out I'm practicing and assisting as much as I can, I'm having a hard time establishing some things. Should all assisting work I do be for free because I'm getting paid in experience? Is it appropriate to request compensation as an assistant?
@lisedridgedotcom This is absolutely the single most helpful video i have ever watched in regard to my career! Lisa Please please please do a follow-up video to this one! You are my IDOL!
Thank you so much for this video! For a long time I was struggling with what industry I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I've done photography, music videos, brides, & fashion magazines and some things in between. Thanks to you, I have finally found what I want to do! Words cannot express how grateful I am. x
This really helped a lot :) Though i have one question. I know you said to choose just one path, but i have been trained in all areas e.g theatre, period, special effects, casualty, fashion, bridal, etc. though i have always wanted to be a film special effects make-up artist. Would you say that doing all these types of make-up would help me get to where i want to be or do you think that they would make it more difficult x
im 12 and i love expirimenting with make-up. i always do make-up on my friends and they think im gonna be a make-up artist when i get older. this vid was super inspiring!
Im just starting out as a make up artist and this video has really inspired me to continue to pursue my dream and what I have always wanted to do. Your a true inspiration!
Your advice is pretty much applicable to everyone who wants to venture into the creative industry: make-up artists, fashion designers, graphic designers, architects, etc. I find this video very helpful. Thank you very much.
This was absolutely enlightening. This video was so helpful and inspirational. Gave me lots to think about and finally made me focus on my path in this industry. Thank you soo much.
Hey Lisa, I have a question: what did you study at the university/what degree do you have? I`m just wondering if it`s ok if I study something unrelated to makeup and then pursue career in makeup. I`m interested in makeup/fashion and I`m a prospective student of international relations.
Amazing information, would love to know the best way to go about starting a career in make-up artistry. Could you recommend a beauty course/school? Or would it be better to go straight into working on a make-up counter? really want to pursue a career as a fashion make-up artist, just unsure of the first step to take!
Any information would be amazing!! have been mulling over this for a LONG time!
hi lisa, i was just wondering if you could help me please, i love bridal makeup and thats the area i would want to work in but i think i would eventually want to go further with that, if you get what i mean ? like brighter colours and more adventurous makeup, what category of makeup do you think would be good for me ? thankyou so much x

Absolutely brilliant. Wish I'd had someone like you telling me this years ago - I was on my way but lacked confidence and direction. Now, years later, am trying to find my way back on track.
You have a great channel here - thank you so much :)
Lisa, I love you work! I just checked out your portfolio and I love your smoky eyes and winged liners! I have a question: what was Billie Piper like in person?? I love Secret Diary of a Call Girl, is she just as funny/sweet as Hannah? Thanks in advance for answering!
Wow what an amazing and inspiring video thank you Lisa :) Would you recommend people who wants to be a makeup artist to go to a university at all? would it be helpful in anyway? Thank you again
I love you videos, and i love the fact that you don't always use Mac products, i like the fact that you introduce us to new products, keep up with the good work :)
Hi Lisa, I work at an Estee Lauder makeup counter right now just to sort of get myself started in the makeup field. I would love to do editorial/fashion work on magazines and things like that. I was wondering if you could make a video of how you got to where you are in your career. Your job sounds like my dream job! And thank you for all of your woderful, helpful, and inspiring videos!
You've just inspired me to get back out there, to pursue my dreams of becoming a successful female auto mechanic. What you said about being mindful of one's dream when choosing jobs is brilliant. Though I'm trained and have apprenticed as a mechanic, I've been coaxed into roles as a service advisor for the past few years. That's not what I want for myself, it's just proven to be the path of least resistance. Well, it's time to put on a brave face - employing your makeup tricks, of course -
Thank you, Lisa. My interest in make-up art started over year ago, and I will pass my final exam at make-up school this may. I hope, I´d be the lucky one, who can do this as full time job, because it´s my passion...but there are many dreamers like me here, right? :)
This is a really great video! Lately there has been more and more technology used in the art of makeup techniques. For example, I just discovered an app from Carmindy that is filled with tutorial videos for a dozen different makeup looks. Who would have guessed?
Absolutely lovely. I have zero interest in makeup, beyond being a hobbyist, but I watched this film in it's entirety because your enthusiasm is cat hin
Photography is my passion and beauty (print) work is my dream! This video is very inspirational. I started doing makeup for my test shoots because when you are starting out in photography it is hard to get makeup artists to work with you. I am loving makeup more and more and I feel myself wanting to be a makeup artist as much as a beauty photographer. Any suggestions?
@TheSuperChristy Francois Nars does a lot of photography now but he made his name in make-up first. I think its fine to do the make-up for your tests when you are starting out but if I was you I'd focus on one or the other...you'll get further along. x
thank you for this video, you just gave me clarity... i have spent the past year reading and practicing and researching....I now know what decisions I need to make and choose a path. :) Its likethe saying, a jack of all traits is a master of none.
At first I thought I will do a little bit of everything, but I see now how that can actually hold me back. So, I will be choosing my path soon and I will stick with it til i make a name and then venture into other parts of the beauty industry. TY
Thank you so much for this video. I am not interested in becoming a makeup artist (just for fun!), but I found it really inspirational in terms of dreaming big and taking chances. Thank you so much!
I've found that my training in makeup for the stage and having been involved in theater productions for over 10 years, it has forayed nicely into a film career. Being "backstage" is very similar to being "behind the scenes" so the transition from one to the other has been nice and comfy. But really, film found me. I've spent the last year working on my print work, but I keep being called back into film. I enjoy photoshoots like you couldn't believe, but "behind the scenes" feels like home.
i really want to be special effect make artist but the courses are so expensive and i just dont know where to begin with this...i mean iam fortune to live in florida where there are 2 awesome make up schools are, but money and time are not my friends right now ... i've made my first step ,i know what i want to do but the problem now is how do i get there ...any advice for me?
I love your nailpolish! I think you have said once before, but if you wouldn't mind, what is the color/brand? I have a skin coloring similar to yours and would really love to try it out! Thanks :)
Although makeup is more of a hobby for me; I want you to know that your advice was amazing! I have a "destination" to get to.... And you just helped me "get on the right train." Thank you....sincerely.
dear lisa, i m not opting to be a make up artist (but makeup is my interest anyway), what i want to say is that i think what u said about making dreams come true is really inspiring ! and in a practical way! thx for ur sharing!!
Really enjoyed this video (though makeup only a hobby for me) but I think this is great advice for success in any field: maintaining focus, developing a great portfolio/reputation and establishing a good network of contacts.
I just want to thank you Lisa. You have really inspired me and gave me some real insight and sense of direction. I have always loved makeup and I literally hurt everyday because I feel like I am not getting any closer to my goal (of becoming a makeup artist). And I want it so badly that I want to do it all but you are right I have to choose one thing and go with it. I know I mustn't give up. I will keep fighting. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video! It was just what I needed to hear. I've been at a makeup counter now for 5 years and it is time to move on! I had not counted on it being that long honestly. Like you said, it's terrifying but I have to have faith (and hopefully some good guidance) that it will all work out. Please ramble on at any time on this subject since it's nice to hear from someone who has been through it and has lots of experience and wisdom about it. Thanks again!
I want to start of by saying I'm a huge fan! Without you I don't think I would know how to use skincare properly and makeup properly, etc. This is a question about skincare, can you recommend any good highstreet exfoliaters? I don't live in the UK but I'm going there this summer and I would really like to try one. All the products you have recommended to me have never let me down so I really would like to know your opinion! I live in Europe and have easy access to french brands also. X
If you ever get bored with make-up you could become a motivational speaker ;) I'm not interested in being a MUA but I loved listening to you talking with real passion about the job. I'm really passionate about my job too, I know what it feels like to make it in the industry and I love the energy that comes out of it.
Hi Lisa! I really really hope you answer me. I'm just starting out as a bridal makeup atrist whilst my family is young with a view to assisting MUAs in the fashion industry in the future. But My ultimate goal is to follow the likes of Jemma Kidd and Ellis Faas and eventually create my own makeup range. Basically creating all the things I wish I had for my job but aren't available. Do you have any idea what I would need to do to go about this? Have you ever considered creating a range yourself?
If you are wanting to learn film and tv makeup, what do you think of these 3 and 6 month courses which cost multiple thousands? Worth the money and a good way to get a start in the industry or a con? Are there cheaper alternatives to learning these skills? Makeup courses seem to be some the most expensive study options!
doing make up is my dream, i buy fashion / make up magazines everytime i see one. im so into that industry and i would love to work in that industry. the thing is that im 17 i live in a really small suburb in australia, queensland and the nearest city is an hour and a half away and the people around me feel like i wont be able to get to where i want to be, that i'll never be a make up artist or a fashion styler. but im going to prove them wrong, one day.
@natalhab a small portion of my portfolio is on my website in the gallery section under headings covers, beauty editorial, advertising etc, have a look there. x
What a usefull information in this video! I'm 29 now and scared about whether can I become a successfull make up artist. Is it too late to begin my career in this way or not? Inspite of it to become a make up artist is my dream. And your advices Lisa is very important for me. I'm your absolut fan. Thank you so much!
You left me with goose bumps . Beautiful video! You got to be the best mother! This video has only one topic: follow your dreams! God, it's inspiring for everyone, not only for aspiring make-up artists. You got very close to my heart, I'm very touched! Thanks for everything! Until next!
i could listen to you talking about make up forever, don't worry about babbling lisa! this really inspired me, i'm young, but i love make up (which is why i am subscribed to you) and i have always wondered if i could make it in the world of make up. i might actually try!
Hi Lisa! I have an idea: how about adding the list of Make Up you wear in your videos as an add on? Since this is a Make Up channel and I keep wondering "what blush is she wearing", "what is the lipstick". If it isn't too much of an effort, it would be a great information.
@ratherthanfacebook for most of the videos I make I do post a list of all the products I use on my blog. I didnt for this one as I have very little make-up on and I had just had an eyelash treatment done (next video will explain all about it though!) x
Please can you tell me if you were on some makeup artist school like high school or something or you just did a course? ..Thank you so much ..I´d love to be a theatre makeup artist or makeup artist for" stars " :) I´m 17 and I´m from Czech republic ..I would do everything to become a makeup artist :) Please help me :))
This is really interesting because it's kind of different than what you're explaining in Miami. I've assisted one of the top makeup artists here but since not a lot of long-term things come to Miami for production, all the makeup artists here cross over to different industries...they'll work on a music video, and a tv series, and a feature film. So, it's interesting to see how things differ in different places.
lisa this advice works across the board be it music- "paper art" animation- comic book-drama-anything that has creativity attached to it- wonderful- x shelly
LOVE LOVE LOVE your necklace!!! you have such great style! you know so many makeup artist and cosmetologist do great work but look sloppy and unkempt. again love your style - also where did you get said necklace?
Thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I needed to hear this morning. "What's your final destination? Don't get on the wrong train." Some of the best life advice I've heard yet. You have no idea how much you impacted me today...thank you thank you thank you:)
if you do another video on this sort of subject, can you tell us your own personal journey from the very beginning to where you are now on how you made it in your industry. great video Lisa, have been looking forward to this one for a while. xx
This is a great video thanks so much! I'm just starting out at college doing make-up, and cannot wait until i'm a proper make-up artist! :)xxxx

Photography is my passion and beauty (print) work is my dream! This video is very inspirational. I started doing makeup for my test shoots because when you are starting out in photography it is hard to get makeup artists to work with you. I am loving makeup more and more and I feel myself wanting to be a makeup artist as much as a beauty photographer. Any suggestions?
TheSuperChristy 10 months ago 4
@TheSuperChristy Francois Nars does a lot of photography now but he made his name in make-up first. I think its fine to do the make-up for your tests when you are starting out but if I was you I'd focus on one or the other...you'll get further along. x

this is so noble of you. Making time to prepare this video and give advice to all of those who are interested in being make up artists. Kudos, Lisa.
You are truly an inspiration. Not only being great at what you do but also being such a great human being. Thank you really. =)

thank you for this video, you just gave me clarity... i have spent the past year reading and practicing and researching....I now know what decisions I need to make and choose a path. :) Its likethe saying, a jack of all traits is a master of none.
At first I thought I will do a little bit of everything, but I see now how that can actually hold me back. So, I will be choosing my path soon and I will stick with it til i make a name and then venture into other parts of the beauty industry. TY

Hi Lisa!
