wow the violinist slides so well it sounds close to a Theremin, what skill! as for the composer... other things being equal he probably could have done better
the music is based on a stochastic process in which the probability of occurrence of a state or group of states, is defined. The time evolution of the process is therefore governed by a sort of controlled randomness, which can be adjusted to give any result since a fully determined until one entirely indeterminate
Everyone wants to "intellectualise" all of xenakis music but really he got alot of ideas from indonesia and chinese folk and proposed them under the pretense of such psuedo intellectual banter.
Before you buy into that kind of nonesense listen to some music from Indonesian Gamelan drummers and chinese erhu folk music. Mix Chinese folk with a little bit of Hendrix and you've got this.
@intervalkid Every modernist is interested in named cultures, from Boulez to Debussy, please dont accuse intellectuals of such pretense, because composers admitted it and they mixed it with the contemporary academical methods, theres no banter here.
I assure you there is banter. There is such a thing a psuedo-intellectual. Bartok clearly admitted that he drew from folk music, yet his music is much farther removed from that folk than this is from erhu music.
Why, I ask, does Xenakis not mention Erhu as an influence when it is so close to that form?
You say "don't accuse intellectuals". I think it is horrying how people will jump to defend and praise past intellectuals (even charlotans) while villifying current innovators.
@intervalkid I think xenakis would had claimed for macedonian influences ( I'm not sure he really did it) - if you listen to bulgarian and macedonian music you'll hunderstand there are lot of point of contacts. maybe he didn't know ehru - it's possible. do you know all music all over in the world - I cant'
@yourockets3 That's true I don't all music in the world, but I find it fairly clear that there was certain folk influence upon his music, and I just don't like the fact that he refuses to acknowledge the fact.
@intervalkid but this is not true! I've sent you a link where he clearly says folk music entered his one. and in any case you could not get down his music for this - you could get down he ( but I suggest you to really search for his life before throwing him down). his statystic methods where intende only in order to have a general control of compositional processes that he deliberately choosed himself. it was his way to control. Bartok wasnt' les speculative in his control of folk matter
@intervalkid The erhu? I have never heard someone play the erhu like this... Anyways, half of the modernism came from foundations of other cultures. Bartok, Debussy, and Stravinsky, all alluded to fol music, symmetric scales used in folk music, pentatonic music used in folk music. Gamelan, Indian, African and Latin, those were on the mind of musicians from Boulez to John Cage. Maybe not explicitly did they credit folk music like Partch did, but they didnt hide it nor pretended it was 'original'.
well, this piece has many similarities to erhu music but with added portimento effects not common to urhu. I have read that Xanakis did state that he was influenced by folk, but not regarding particular pieces, he tends to go into detail about philosophy and mathematics regarding individual pieces though, without the mention of the more apparent (if you have ever heard them) stylistic folk influences.
@intervalkid you are saying true things, but there's no contraddiction in his intellectual point of view and "folk" music influences. he used abstract means in ordere to control musical matter - Bartok did the same ( I deeply studied his 4° quartet I know what I'm talking about). what's up against intellectuals? :) Jesus is as correct as you in talking about Xenakis - there's no contraddiction...no reason for fighting :)
Oh so forgettable!

Go away. Let us who enjoy this music enjoy it — you don't need to complain if your ears can't handle it. Just leave.

Still, it's interesting to read what people are complaining about when they don't like contemporary music. I mean, a perception can't be wrong.
